Isabella Jonas-Wheildon murder: Mother's sentence to be reviewed
A mother who wheeled her daughter's body around in a pram could have her sentence for allowing the toddler's death increased at the Court of Appeal for being "unduly lenient".Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell, 24, was jailed for 10 years in December after pleading guilty to child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of her two-year-old daughter, Isabella Wheildon, at the hands of her partner, Scott Jeff.The pair, from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, wheeled Isabella's body around in a pushchair before leaving her in a bathroom at a hostel for the homeless in Ipswich in June 2023.At her sentencing, a judge described Gleason-Mitchell as a "weak and spineless person and pathetically desperate".
But her sentence could now be increased after solicitor general Lucy Rigby agreed to refer the case to the Court of Appeal following a request from shadow safeguarding minister Alicia Kearns.
In a letter to Ms Kearns, Ms Rigby said she was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the "horrific crime", and had decided there were "sufficient legal grounds to conclude that the sentence would likely be increased by the Court of Appeal".Ms Kearns said: "Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell failed to protect her child from Scott Jeff, who horrifically abused and brutally murdered her child."No punishment will ever make up for their heinous actions, let alone their depraved behaviour in the days following her murder visiting the pub and pushing her lifeless body around the shops."I thank the solicitor general for accepting my request to refer Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell's paltry sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient."Isabella Wheildon did not deserve the awful abuse that she suffered: 36 days of beatings and being given drugs. Her killers deserve to never see the light of day again."Any spineless individual who stands by as a child is murdered should spend decades behind bars. I hope the Court of Appeal will agree and finally give Isabella the justice she deserves."
Jeff, also 24, was convicted of Isabella's murder and handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 26 years for what the judge described as a "cruel campaign of violence and abuse which ended in her death".Ms Kearns had also asked for Jeff's sentence to be reviewed, but the Solicitor General declined to refer his case to the Court of Appeal, saying it did not meet the "very high" threshold for a review.The Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme allows any member of the public to ask the Attorney General's Office to review a sentence they believe is too lenient.If the law officers - the attorney general and solicitor general - agree the sentence appears unduly lenient, they can ask the Court of Appeal to review the sentence.It is then up to the Court of Appeal to decide whether to hear the case and, if it does, whether the sentence should be increased.

Patrick Mitchell was caught by police after a witnesses reported the shocking incident that took place in "aisle 18 at Sam's Club" in the Orlando-area, of Florida. Managers at the store, which works in a similar way to Costco which has come to the UK, said they looked over CCTV and saw a man walking up to pallets with "both hands in front of him below belt line, and stood there for several seconds", according to police. A detective in the case added that his actions were "behaviour consistent with urination". Workers, after taking a close look at the location, confirmed "there was urine on two pallets". These contained around 188 bulk units of Vienna sausages and "345 units of 8 count canned Spam Classic". The supermarket was forced to throw all of these items away because they had been "contaminated with bodily fluids", according to a police affidavit. Cops revealed the combined value of these items was worth a staggering $10,584.54 (£7,802.83), according to the Daily Star. The witness who spotted Mitchell "used her cellphone to take a picture of the defendant and reported the incident to store employees". He was then unbelievably caught on CCTV taking a walk around the store and he even relaxed on display furniture for 10 minutes. The 70-year-old then "walked to register #2, paid for his items and left the store". Mitchell was tracked down using membership records from Sam's Club - which is a membership-only warehouse store chain. His details were pulled up because "all customers have to provide their membership card to a cashier prior to purchasing items while at a point of sale". Police compared Mitchell's driver's license photo with the image taken by the female witness resulted in a positive identification, as detailed on a police report following the incident. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and criminal mischief - which is considered a felony since the alleged damage exceeded $1000 (£737). Mitchell pleaded not guilty and is free on a $3000 (£2,211) bond in advance of his June 30 court appearance. Unbelievably this has not been the first time someone has been accused of urinating on food in a supermarket. A drunk man was filmed relieving himself over ready meals in a supermarket fridge as customers watched on in disbelief. He was dragged out of the Family Mart store by security while still peeing all over the floor, in the Japanese city of Nagoya. Photos showed the man later being spoken to by a police officer, with witnesses saying he denied any of the behaviour he was filmed doing. He said: "I don't remember peeing. I definitely didn't do that." It is not clear if he was arrested or charged by police at the time.

An anaesthetist who took indecent photos of a five-year-old girl while she lay unconscious has lost a bid to shorten his sentence. Edward Finn committed 'about as egregious breach of trust as can be imagined' when he captured the pictures of four female victims. The 37-year-old made indecent images of a five-year-old girl and an adult patient after he anaesthetised them. And he also took photos of his wife while she was asleep, as well as a three-year-old daughter of a family friend. Finn was sentenced in June 2024 to eight years in jail with an extended licence of four years after pleading guilty at Nottingham Crown Court. He subsequently challenged the length of his sentence - though the Court of Appeal in London has now dismissed this. Mr Justice Johnson, sitting with Lord Justice Fraser and Judge Martin Picton, said Finn's offences took place between 2014 and 2023. He was caught after his wife found images of naked children on an old iPad, in a folder labelled 'hidden', the judge said. Further investigations into all of Finn's devices revealed thousands of indecent images of children, including more than a hundred in the most serious category, and images of an adult and a child taken during the course of his work. Finn, from Cotgrave in Nottinghamshire, told officers he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after a girl he was treating had died. He also tried to take his own life before he was arrested and charged, the court heard. Andrew Wesley, for Finn, said at the appeal hearing on Friday that the sentence was too long because of 'the mathematics' of how it was reached. But the judges dismissed the appeal, with Mr Justice Johnson adding: 'This was about as egregious a breach of trust as can be imagined.' He continued: 'We conclude that the sentence imposed was not wrong in principle or manifestly excessive. 'We therefore dismiss the appeal.'
