SIT to probe illegal mining into remaining fields of Thadagam valley
COIMBATORE: Activists in Thadagam Valley welcomed the Madras High Court's April 17 order directing the special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the remaining brickkiln fields in the Thadagam valley to ascertain illegal mining which is affecting the movement of wild elephants along their corridor in the Perur taluk of Coimbatore district. Illegal activities of brickkilns in the fields too will come under the SIT purview.
S Muralidharan, a petitioner and Chennai-based activist, told TNIE that the hundreds and thousands of acres of areas were illegally mined in the Thadagam valley. The Madras High court should punish the illegal brickkiln owners and revenue and mining officials who issued licence but failed to monitor the indiscriminate mining that resulted in environmental degradation and an increase in human-animal conflict.
"Punishing the government officials will set an example and help protect the environment and wildlife in future," said Muralidharan.
S Ganesh of Thadagam Valley Protection Committee said "These brickkiln units are located very close to the foothills of the Western Ghats and an important elephant corridor has been there for over the last 25 years. Out of the 806 brickkiln fields in five villages in the Thadagam valley, the joint committee has submitted a report after conducting field visits only in 565 fields and found illegal mining in up to 433 villages. The SIT will investigate the 241 remaining fields at Nanjundapuram, Veerapandi and Chinna Thadagam villages in the Thadagam valley."
"These units have mined excessive soil and created a roadblock for free animal movement, thus resulting in elephant forays into residential areas and agricultural fields. If the SIT probe is not satisfactory, we will pray the Madras High Court to hand over the investigation into the illegal brickkiln units, which are sealed now, to the CBI if the revenue, mining and police personnel fail to stop those taking machines or soil, etc., from the sealed units," said Ganesh.
The court has also appointed D Shanmugapriya, SP, CB-CID, Chennai, to head the SIT replacing G Nagajothi, the SP of the State Crime Records Bureau since Nagajothi was on continuous leave due to her husband's death.

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya recalled picking a young Virat Kohli 18 seasons ago in the players auction and said it was remarkable to witness the maestro staying loyal to the franchise, which has finally won a long-awaited IPL trophy. RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the IPL final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to end their long wait in the 18th edition of the tournament. "When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years," Mallya wrote in a post on 'X'. RCB, which was bought by Mallya for USD 111.6 million back in 2008, picked Kohli in the inaugural IPL auction in January 2008, and the batting superstar has only played for the Bengaluru-based franchise since then. Mallya is, however, credited with playing major a role in signing the cricketing giants like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis, and Anil Kumble among others for RCB. "I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVillers who remain an indelible part of RCB history. Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. "Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe ! "RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years. Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations ! Gender-neutral shift: JNU vice-chancellor to be called 'Kulguru' instead of 'Kulpati'
JNU NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to replace the term "Kulpati" with "Kulguru" for its vice-chancellor in all degree certificates and academic records, three years after such a change was first proposed . JNU made the decision during a meeting of its Executive Council in April. The minutes of the meeting stated as agenda: "To change/rename of designation from 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru' for the signature on the degree certificates and other academic documents." The directive has been marked for action by the Controller of examinations. "'Kulguru' is not only culturally significant but also gender-neutral, offering a more inclusive alternative to the conventional titles used in Indian universities," news agency PTI quoted a JNU official as saying. In Hindi, "pati" means husband, while "guru" translates to teacher, a gender-neutral term. 'Symbolic gesture': JNUSU president Reacting to the move, JNU Students' Union president Nitish Kumar said that instead of "symbolic gestures", the Delhi-based university should work towards "concrete gender justice." "Along with changing 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru', the VC should also fulfill the demands for gender-neutral washrooms and gender-neutral hostels. Move beyond symbolic gestures and work towards concrete gender justice," Kumar wrote on X. Not first such name-change The university move is in line with similar changes already implemented by the Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan governments. In February, Rajasthan passed an amendment to adopt "Kulguru" and "Pratikulguru" for "Kulpati" and "Upkulpati", a decision approved the following month. In July last year, Madhya Pradesh unanimously approved an amendment that the vice-chancellors of the universities in the state will be addressed as "Kulguru".
