Harvey Fierstein Says He's 'Banned' From Kennedy Center Amid Trump Takeover: 'How Freedom Ends'

Yahoo20-03-2025

With a storied stage and screen career behind him, Harvey Fierstein is denouncing Donald Trump's takeover of the Kennedy Center.
The 4x Tony winner, who has starred in several Kennedy Center productions over the years, called out the Trump administration with an impassioned statement on Instagram after more than 20 shows were canceled or postponed.

'A few folks have written to ask how I feel about Trump's takeover of The Kennedy Center. How do you think I feel?' wrote Fierstein in the post. 'The shows I've written are now banned from being performed in our premiere American theater. Those shows, most of which have been performed there in the past, include, KINKY BOOTS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, TORCH SONG TRILOGY, HAIRSPRAY, SAFE SEX, CASA VALENTINA, SPOOKHOUSE, A CATERED AFFAIR, THE SISSY DUCKLING, BELLA BELLA and more.
'I have been in the struggle for our civil rights for more than 50 years only to watch them snatched away by a man who actually couldn't care less. He does this stuff only to placate the religious right so they'll look the other way as he savages our political system for his own glorification,' he continued.
Fierstein said of Trump, 'He attacks free speech. He attacks the free press. He attacks America's allies. His only allegiance is to himself – the golden calf. My fellow Americans I warn you – this is NOT how it begins. This is how freedom ENDS! Trump may have declared 'woke' as dead in America. We must prove him wrong. WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!'
Fierstein's statement comes as Trump visited the Kennedy Center this week, following his appointment as the Center's new chairman after he ousted half the organization's board members, who were nominated by Joe Biden.
Since Trump took over, Shonda Rhimes has resigned from the board of the Kennedy Center, and Issa Rae has canceled a show scheduled for the venue. Meanwhile, Trump has faced backlash from supporters of the Kennedy Center's canceled touring children's musical Finn.
Trump previously threatened to make the Kennedy Center 'GREAT AGAIN,' announcing his plan last month to remove those 'who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.'
'We will soon announce a new Board, with an amazing Chairman, DONALD J. TRUMP!' he added. 'Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP. The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!'

Noem's Security Cuffs Senator Who Heckled Her L.A. Rant

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference in Los Angeles went off the rails after it was crashed by one of California's senators. Noem was slamming California leaders amid protests in the state against ICE raids when Senator Alex Padilla interrupted her. The California lawmaker was grabbed and bundled out of the room before being handcuffed. The incident drew an immediate response from the state's Governor Gavin Newsom, who said: 'Senator Alex Padilla is one of the most decent people I know. This is outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful. Trump and his shock troops are out of control. This must end now.' 'Secretary, I want to know why you insist on exaggerating and embellishing,' Padilla began before being intercepted by officials. Video showed the senator being grabbed by the arms and pushed toward the exit. 'I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,' he continued, trying to speak as he was shoved toward the door. 'Because the fact of the matter is a half a dozen violent criminals that should be –' At that point, the senator was removed from the room. Padilla could be seen holding his hands up as three men, including one wearing an FBI vest, continued to escort him out. He was then forced to the ground, instructed to put his hands behind his back, and handcuffed. At that point, a man stood in front of the camera and said there was no recording allowed. The person recording could be heard saying that Padilla was his boss and he was not a member of the press before the video ended. DHS slammed the senator in response to a request for the Daily Beast for comment. 'Senator Padilla chose disrespectful political theater and interrupted a live press conference without identifying himself or having his Senate security pin on as he lunged toward Secretary Noem,' said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement. 'Mr. Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers' repeated commands. U.S. Secret Service thought he was an attacker, and officers acted appropriately. Secretary Noem met with Senator Padilla after and held a 15-minute meeting,' she continued. Asked during the press conference about the senator's interruption, Noem said she did not know the senator and claimed he did not request a meeting with her. She called his actions 'inappropriate.' However, Padilla slammed his treatment and questioned how others would be mistreated by the administration if he were handcuffed on the ground. 'I was there peacefully. I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed. I was not arrested. I was not detained,' Padilla said. 'If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, we can only imagine what they are doing to farm workers, to day laborers, throughout the Los Angeles community, and throughout California, and, throughout the country. We will hold this administration accountable,' he added. Other Democrats have also expressed outrage over Padilla's treatment. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the floor of the Senate that the video of Padilla being handcuffed on the ground sickened his stomach. 'To look at this video and see what happened reeks—reeks—of totalitarianism," Schumer said. 'This is not what democracies do.' Schumer called for an immediate investigation into what happened. 'It's despicable. It's disgusting. It is so un-American, so un-American, and we need answers,' the New York senator said. He was one of several Democratic senators who blasted Padilla's treatment on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon. 'The brazen and aggressive manhandling of Senator Padilla by the Trump administration is a sickening disgrace,' said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a post. 'Anyone who assaulted the Senator should be held accountable. No one is above the law.'

Video Proves ICE Barbie's Claim Her Goons Didn't Know Padilla Was BS

ICE Barbie Kristi Noem's claim that Secret Service agents did not know who California Senator Alex Padilla was as they forcibly removed him from a press briefing has been spectacularly disproved. Multiple clips from the incident, including one captured by a Fox News reporter, show that Padilla, a Democrat, clearly identified himself as a U.S. senator as Noem's security detail approached him midway through a Thursday news conference. 'I am Sen. Alex Padilla,' he can be heard saying clearly, as a member of Noem's security team held the 52-year-old politician's shirt and pushed him backward. Struggling to speak while being engaged, Padilla continued: 'I have questions for the secretary, because the fact of the matter is a half a dozen violent criminals that should be–' Padilla was removed from the briefing room before he could finish his statement. Noem and the communications team at the Department of Homeland Security, which President Donald Trump appointed her to oversee, were accused of immediately going into spin mode, placing blame for the ordeal on Padilla and claiming that he was a random man for all they knew. 'Senator Padilla chose disrespectful political theatre and interrupted a live press conference without identifying himself or having his Senate security pin on as he lunged toward Secretary Noem,' said DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin. Noem quickly went on Fox News to make a similar claim. 'This man burst into the room, started lunging towards the podium, interrupting me and elevating his voice, and was stopped,' she said of Padilla. 'He did not identify himself and was removed from the room. So, as soon as he identified himself, appropriate actions were taken.' More than 20 seconds passed between Padilla identifying himself as a senator and him being ordered to the ground and briefly placed in handcuffs. One of his staffers recorded the ordeal until an official blocked the view of his camera and ordered him to stop recording. The FBI said in a statement that Padilla was not wearing a 'Senate security pin' that would confirm his identity to federal agents. The bureau added that he was 'disruptive' at the event and was released after he was 'positively identified.' Republicans have defended the Secret Service and agreed with Noem's claim that Padilla did not identify himself. Democrats, perhaps predictably, have sided with Padilla. 'If they can handcuff a U.S. Senator for asking a question, imagine what they will do to you,' said California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Padilla had a similar message in a statement he gave shortly after the incident. 'If this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community, and throughout California, and throughout the country,' he said. 'We will hold this administration accountable.'

Dem Breaks With Party After Noem Security Stunt: ‘Politics as Theater'

A Democratic representative broke rank within his own party by describing the altercation between law enforcement and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) on Thursday as 'theater.' Speaking to Axios, Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) weighed in on the intense moment that occurred during a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and expressed that he felt it was out of place. 'I think that it's never good when a senator or member of Congress gets roughed up by law enforcement,' Golden told Axios Thursday in an interview at the Capitol. But, he added: 'I don't think politics as theater is what our job is here.' Padilla was forcibly removed by officers after he tried to ask Noem a question during a news conference on immigration at the Los Angeles FBI Headquarters Thursday. Democrats have since stood by Padilla; Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said the incident made him sick to his stomach, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren called it 'horrifying.' In video footage captured by reporters, Padilla can be seen introducing himself before several officers proceed to push him out of the room before detaining him, holding him to the ground, and handcuffing him. The senator was later allowed to meet with Noem however, per Axios. 'Storming into the FBI headquarters and trying to break up a press conference and rushing on a [cabinet] secretary is not really the job of an elected official,' Golden added of the moment to the outlet. Still, he noted: 'I am not in any way saying that means law enforcement should be slamming people around.' Padilla subsequently told reporters that he was at the press conference 'peacefully.' 'I was there peacefully,' the senator said, per NBC News. 'At one point, I had a question, and so I began to ask a question. I was almost immediately forcibly removed from the room, I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed.' In a following interview with Fox News, Noem claimed that Padilla did not identify himself before being forced out of the room despite video footage capturing him doing so. 'We were conducting a press conference to update everyone on the enforcement actions that are ongoing to bring peace to the city of Los Angeles,' Noem said, referring to the ongoing protests against immigration raids in L.A. 'And this man burst into the room, started lunging towards the podium, interrupting me and elevating his voice, and was stopped, did not identify himself, and was removed from the room,' she continued. The FBI said in a statement that Padilla was not wearing a 'Senate security pin' that would confirm his identity to federal agents. The bureau added that he was 'disruptive' at the event and was released after he was 'positively identified.' Acting ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch, further told Axios that he thinks Padilla's incident on Thursday should be investigated. 'We only saw clips of it, so I'd like to find out everything that happened and how that occurred,' Lynch told the outlet. 'He was very roughly handled, and it seemed like he was just trying to interject and attend the [press] conference. So, yeah, I think we need to take a good hard look at it.'
