Welcome home: 114th Fighter Wing airmen honored
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Nearly 200 South Dakota Air National Guard members have returned home safely from a mission that started in 2023. It spanned across three different regions of the world.
'Our main mission was to generate and sustain combat air power from a base in the Middle East. That entailed providing security and stability throughout the region,' Deployment Chief of Staff Jessica Bak said.
The final group returned in April from a six-month deployment. Those a part of the year-and-a-half long mission were recognized for their bravery Saturday morning in Sioux Falls.
''Welcome Home' ceremonies like this are just really important because it just goes to show that we can't do this mission without the support from our families and communities back home,' Bak said. 'It's so important to know that they have our backs.'
Many families don't reunite until after deployment. However, that wasn't the case for one father-son duo.
Technical Sergeant Roger Crook has almost 20 years of military service. This was his last mission.
'I'm going to miss some aspects. I'm going to definitely miss the people,' Roger said.
The sergeant is retiring, but not without passing along the torch to his airman son, Trevor Crook.
'It really means a lot to me, knowing that I'm the one carrying on the legacy from now, carrying out the Crook name,' Trevor said.
This was Trevor's first deployment. He said he's learned a lot from his dad and other airmen.
'Almost everyone you would run into over there, they would be willing to help you,' Trevor said.
The two worked alongside each other throughout the entire mission.
'It gave me a little bit of comfort, still having family back home,' Roger said. 'But also having family with me was kind of a nice comfort.'
City, state and air guard leaders gave remarks and thanked airmen for their service. Each guard member received two golden coins.

Man Kicks Mom Out for 'Praying' Wife's Unborn Child Is 'Healthy' After Prior Stillbirth. Now She Wants an Apology
A father kicked his own mom out during dinner after she made repeated digs about his pregnant wife and autistic son Her comments about stillbirth, high-risk pregnancy and 'praying' pushed the couple's emotional limits He stood his ground to protect his wife — now his mom says he owes her an apologyA man is turning to Reddit for support after a tense family dinner ended with him asking his own mother to leave his home following a series of comments she made about his wife's pregnancy. The 37-year-old father and husband, who has been married for 12 years, began his post by sharing that he and his wife are the parents of a 10-year-old autistic son. In addition to his son, the couple experienced a stillbirth about three years ago. 'My wife has severe anxiety about this pregnancy now as well along with nightmares and I've just been trying to do my best for her,' he wrote, describing the emotional toll that a previous stillbirth and the current pregnancy have taken on his family. His wife, now 21 weeks pregnant, is seeing a therapist to help manage her anxiety as the couple hopes for the best outcome. The family's recent dinner with his parents was meant to be a time of togetherness, but quickly took a turn when his mother began making pointed remarks about their son's autism and the new baby's health. 'My mom began talking [about] how hopefully this one's born healthy mentally and physically implying our son's autism,' he recalled. The poster immediately shut down the conversation. 'I instantly shut her down and said that's not even on our minds, she made a comment saying it should be, and my father told her to stop.' Even after his father intervened and asked her to stop, she resumed the conversation later, questioning whether his wife was considered high-risk due to her age and referencing the previous loss. The final straw came when his mother said, 'she'll be praying for us because it's more likely to happen if it's happened before and my wife's age plays a factor now as well.' At that point, he decided to end the evening. 'I then said okay I think it's time for you to leave,' he shared, describing how his mother became upset and insisted her comments were kind. A heated argument followed, but ultimately his mother left, with his father apologizing on her behalf. The fallout didn't end there. 'She got upset and said what she said was kind, and I said I already told you not to bring it up,' he shared. 'We got into a huge argument but she did end up leaving, my father apologized on her behalf.' 'Later that night my mom started texting me calling me an ah [a------] and said she couldn't believe I would kick her out of my house for saying she'd pray for me, and how badly I broke her heart tonight,' he wrote. He concluded his story saying that the next day, his mother continued to reach out, telling him she's 'still waiting for an apology.' Now, the man is caught between setting boundaries and shielding his wife from additional stress. Read the original article on People
