Mixu Paatelainen appointed The Spartans new sporting director
The striker, who is fondly remembered for his hat trick in Hibs 6-2 victory over Hearts has been appointed as The Spartans new Sporting Director, supporting the Men's and Women's senior teams and the Men's Under 20 team.
70 times capped for his native Finland, Paatelainen will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise courtesy of a playing career spanning two decades, followed up by eighteen years in managerial roles on both a domestic and national arena.
Speaking of his decision to join The Spartans, Paatelainen said, 'I've been very impressed how people go about things, how organised they are, how good the people who are in charge are, and their ambition.
'Everybody knows that Spartans is a community club who do a lot for the kids – boys and girls – which is fabulous. The facilities are fantastic and what struck me straight away is that people are very ambitious, they don't want to be a League 2 club all the way, they want to go forward and do better, and it's a wonderful club, wonderful people, so I want to be part of that.
'I will step on nobody's toes, that's for sure I want to be a sounding board. I know some head coaches, when there's a sporting director coming to a club for the first time, they might be alarmed and worry that people think they are not doing a good enough job.
'That is not the case here. Dougie has done a fantastic job, there's no question, and this is just another piece in the jigsaw. It's as simple as that. We want to try to make us stronger and hopefully improve us enough to take the next step.'
Chairman Craig Graham added, 'Mixu's appointment brings us so much expertise. He will support me, my fellow Directors and all our coaches as we continue to grow and develop our club. It's a brilliant appointment for us.
'We are an ambitious club and the Mixu will help us drive forward all aspects of our strategic agenda. After a hugely successful playing and managerial career Mixu now has a senior role in the UEFA Technical team and with the SFA in coach education.
'He is so passionate about football and to helping others develop, it's such an exciting move for us.'

Club legend Colin Cameron ousted as Raith Rovers appoint Andy Kirk as Barry Robson's new assistant
Assistant-manager Colin Cameron has left Raith Rovers to be replaced by Andy Kirk. Cameron has been ousted as part of a changes to Barry Robson's backroom staff at Stark's Park this summer. The 52-year-old started his playing career at Raith before leaving his hometown team in 1996 for a move to Hearts. The midfielder had subsequent spells with Wolves, Coventry City and Dundee before moving into management at Cowdenbeath. And he then returned to his first club in 2022 as number two to Ian Murray, who he had worked with for a short spell at Airdrie. He survived a change in manager at Rovers last season when Murray was sacked and replaced by Neill Collins. With Collins then being replaced by Barry Robson in December, Cameron saw out the season as part of the ex-Aberdeen manager's backroom team. A hall of fame member from his playing career, he has been a popular figure with the first-team squad through all the changes. However, it has been decided to shake up Robson's staff for next term and the former Scotland internationalist has fallen victim to the changes. A statement read: 'After three seasons as assistant manager, Rovers legend 'Micky' Cameron is now set to move on. 'We'd like to say a huge thank you to Micky for his contributions during his time in the dugout and wish him all the best in his next chapter.' As revealed by Courier Sport, Andy Kirk is the man Raith have turned to as replacement for Cameron. Kirk has been been removed from his role as St Johnstone assistant-manager, with boss Simo Valakari keen to move in a different direction and get his own men in following relegation from the Premiership. Kirk was taken to McDiarmid Park as Craig Levein's number two following a spell coaching at Hearts and stints as manager of Hearts Women and Brechin City. The former Northern Ireland internationalist spent five years as a player with rivals Dunfermline but has built a growing reputation as a coach since hanging up his boots in 2014. A Raith statement said: 'Raith Rovers Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Andy Kirk as the club's new assistant-manager. 'As Barry Robson continues to build his squad, Andy was identified as a key figure he wanted to add to his backroom staff.'

A Hibs star's lengths he went to in order to make a Easter Road move reality have been revealed - as he comes with an unrivalled skill. Raphael Sallinger has signed a three year deal to join the Premiership side after time in Austria with TSV Hartberg. He was a regular for the Austrian Bundesliga side and it will be his first venture outside of the country since time at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Germany, bolstering the goalkeeping department that also has Jordan Smith within it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad TSV Chairman and Managing Director Erich Korherr has claimed that Sallinger put in a transfer request to make the Hibs move happen. There are no hard feelings, however, as he piled praise on David Gray's new keeper. He's also been labelled with an icy nickname. Why Hibs recruit made move to Easter Road A club statement reads: 'TSV regular goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger is moving abroad for the new season and joining Scottish Premier League club Hibernian FC . The capital club from Edinburgh finished third in the championship round of the Scottish Premiership in the 2024/2025 season behind Celtic Glasgow and Glasgow Rangers. 'Sallinger has been with TSV since their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018. Initially, the now 29-year-old was the backup goalkeeper behind Rene Swete. However, the Klagenfurt native showed patience and has been the undisputed number one in the TSV goal for the past two and a half years. He played 106 games for the blue and white team, keeping 31 clean sheets. Raphael Sallinger was the team's calming influence, the "Iceman," a key player both on the pitch and in the locker room.' Korherr said: 'Salli approached us with a request to transfer. He was a key player and key player until the very end, and played a major role in our success. His strength with his feet and in passing is unparalleled in Austria. He also repeatedly saved points with his many brilliant saves and strong reactions on the line. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad New Hibs transfer lands praise 'Of course, the loss hurts greatly, but it shows once again that TSV Hartberg is a perfect platform to play yourself into the spotlight and recommend yourself for higher responsibilities. The move abroad is the next step. We also warmly congratulate Raphael and wish him a call-up to the red-white-red national team one day. The search for an adequate replacement is in full swing; the requirements profile is clear." Sallinger said in a parting message to Hartberg: "I know that this decision will mark the end of a very special chapter in my career. A time in which I truly learned a lot, met special people, and experienced special moments. I was there for seven years and am proud that I was able to play a key role, especially in the last two and a half years as No. 1. 'Those were certainly the club's two most successful years, with the points record and championship playoff last year and the cup final this year. Now I'm looking forward to my new challenge at Hibernian. I will always keep TSV and all those who have accompanied me close to my heart and wish everyone involved only the best!"

The last Hearts team to face Sunderland ahead of summer clash as major changes occur inside four years
Hearts legend Craig Gordon has been rewarded for his impressive service at Tynecastle with a testimonial against former club Sunderland. The Scotland veteran has made 330 appearances over two spells with the club and spent five years with Sunderland after joining the Black Cats in a reported £9m move during the summer of 2007. Just weeks after agreeing a new one-year deal at Tynecastle, Gordon will celebrate his lengthy service with a clash of his current and former clubs on Saturday, July 26. He said: 'Throughout my career I've won trophies, played at the highest level and represented my country, but what fills me with pride the most is pulling on that Hearts jersey and walking out in front of our fans. To be able to share a testimonial year with our supporters is very special to me. It's also particularly pleasing to look forward to welcoming Sunderland to Tynecastle. 'I enjoyed some great times at the Stadium of Light and they hold a special place in my heart. I extend my thanks to everyone on my testimonial committee for all of their hard work, and the club for their support, in organising what I hope will be an enjoyable testimonial year for our magnificent supporters. Without their backing, I would not have been able to achieve what I have in my career and for that I am forever grateful.' This will not be the first time Hearts and Sunderland have met in pre-season as their last meeting ended with 2-0 win for the Black Cats in July 2021 thanks to two goals from Celtic winger Aidan McGeady - but who started for Hearts on that day?
