Erasmus unveils monster Springbok squad for Tests against Baa-Baas, Italy and Georgia

France 242 days ago

The squad, consisting of 30 forwards and 24 backs, includes 31 Rugby World Cup veterans and nine uncapped players.
There will be a staggered approach to players joining the camp that starts on June 8 given ongoing league finals in the United Rugby Championship and English Premiership.
The full Japan-based contingent of players are all available following the conclusion of their season.
Five players were not considered for selection due to injuries: Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane.
"We were very pleased with the two Springbok alignment camps we hosted, and we are excited to have the luxury of announcing a squad with so much depth and talent," said Erasmus.
"Having an expanded squad will not only afford us the opportunity to have productive training sessions, but it will also bode well for the younger players in the group to learn from the senior players, many of whom are Rugby World Cup champions.
"We take pride in offering talented young players a chance to work first-hand with the coaches and to expose them to standards at international level, and we are excited to see them showcase their skills at the camp."
Erasmus added: "We used a total of 50 players last season in an attempt to balance the load on them, while at the same time building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, and with a few more talented youngsters in this group, we hope that they will learn valuable lessons and stake a strong claim for places in what will be a challenging, yet exciting season."
The Springboks will meet the Barbarians in their first encounter on South African soil in Cape Town on June 28, followed by back-to-back Tests against Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12, and Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19.

Bromell scorches 100m as Chebet shines at Rome Diamond League

Bromell, a two-time world outdoor bronze medallist and 2016 world indoor champion, dominated the field, with compatriot Fred Kerley coming in fifth in 10.06sec. Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme (9.99) and Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala (10.01) rounded out the podium in the blue riband event. Kenya's Beatrice Chebet, who won Olympic golds in the 5,000 and 10,000m in Paris last year, posted the second fastest time of all time in the women's 5,000m, clocking 14:03.69 after a stunning solo breakaway at the Stadio Olimpico. It was just three seconds off Gudaf Tsegay's world record set in Eugene in 2023, the Ethiopian finishing third in the Italian capital as the field struggled with Chebet's kick four laps out from the finish. "I was planning to run 14:15, but I felt like my body was moving and I decided to go," said Chebet. "So I see that my body is in a good shape and I am capable of of the world record. So now I am going home and will prepare for it. Everything is possible. If I get someone who will push me up to 3000, it is possible." Another Olympic champion, Quincy Hall of the USA, held his nerve to claim victory in the men's 400m in 44.22sec, winning in a photo finish from fast-finishing South African Zakithi Nene. There was a first Diamond League win since 2022 for Sandi Morris in the women's pole vault, the American clearing 4.80m for the victory. "Today is monumental for me on a personal level," said Morris, a three-time world silver medallist. "I have been fighting with problems with my shoulder so I have to keep the volume of jumps lower. I really wanted to keep jumping but I also listen to my goals." There was, however, no glory for Gianmarco Tamberi in the men's high jump in front of his adoring fans. The joint 2020 Olympic gold medallist, also the current European and world champion, bombed out at a lowly 2.16m in a competition won by South Korea's Sanghyeok Woo, with a best of 2.32m.

South Korea turn focus to 2026 after sealing World Cup spot

Hong's side belatedly saw off 10-man Iraq 2-0 in front of a noisy Basra crowd on Thursday to seal an 11th straight World Cup appearance. Substitutes Oh Hyeon-gyu and Kim Jin-kyu scored in the second half to send South Korea through with a game to spare. "Now that today's match is over and our qualification is confirmed, we will focus everything on the World Cup from this point forward," Hong told reporters. "There are many things to consider but I believe we need to prepare step by step, steadily, for the World Cup finals." South Korea top Group B from Jordan with five wins and four draws but it has not been an easy qualifying campaign. They remain heavily reliant on skipper and Spurs attacker Son Heung-min, 32, who was not involved against Iraq. He lifted the Europa League trophy with the Spurs but had a mixed season by his high standards and struggled for form and fitness. South Korea were held by Palestine and drew home to Oman and Jordan in their three previous games, as they laboured to finish the line. Decorated former international Hong, 56, was booed by fans following his appointment nearly a year ago. That came after South Korean football bosses scrambled around trying to find a permanent successor to the sacked and unpopular Jurgen Klinsmann. Hong said that the sending-off of Iraq's English-based forward Ali Al-Hamadi on 26 minutes changed the game. "I expected this to be a difficult match and even as it began, I judged that it wouldn't be easy," he said. "But once the opposing team had a player sent off we were able to take control of the game. "Ultimately, we capitalised on the man advantage, created scoring opportunities and secured the win. "I want to congratulate my players and say I'm very pleased." South Korea host Kuwait on Tuesday in their last qualifier. The World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico takes place in June-July next year.

England paceman Carse considered amputation of troublesome toe

The express paceman has battled against longstanding problems with the second toe of his left foot. He was forced to pull out of England's Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan in February and withdraw from a lucrative deal in the Indian Premier League. "It ended up being quite a severe wound I was playing with for the majority of the winter, it got infected a couple of times," Carse said ahead of England's first T20 against the West Indies at his home ground of Durham on Friday. "It is a bit running joke in the changing room, my second toe. So we came up with the thought, 'Can we just get rid of the second toe'? "Everyone has had their opinion on my second toe. At one stage I was going to bed thinking 'I could actually do this, I think I could get rid of my second toe' but then the medical staff said you need it for balance so that was quickly ruled out. "I'm going to have to keep it a little bit longer." Carse has taken various measures, including changing his boots, and had an extended break between February and May. The South African-born player has only played five Tests but he is increasingly viewed as a first-choice bowler for England across all formats. He is set to play for England in one-day internationals, T20s and Test cricket this month alone and knows his body will be pushed to the limit. "Playing through all three formats is a challenge for anyone," Carse said. "As we work through the summer I'm going to have to look after myself and those are always ongoing conversations but we've got an incredible support structure and medical staff." England, who wrapped up a 3-0 win against the West Indies in their one-day international series on Tuesday, now take on the Caribbean team in three T20s, at Chester-le-Street, Bristol and Southampton.
