Roméo Lavia is the ideal cog in Enzo Maresca's machine – when he is fit

The Guardian09-05-2025

'When he is fit, he is one of the best midfielders,' enthused Enzo Maresca after Chelsea's 1-0 win over Everton a few weeks ago. His team had laboured to a narrow home win but the manager was full of praise for his young midfielder. Chelsea have paid huge transfer fees for midfielders in recent years, breaking the British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernández from Benfica for £107m and then upping the record to bring in Moisés Caicedo from Brighton, but Maresca knows his team is at its best when Roméo Lavia is available.
Fernández and Caicedo have performed superbly in recent weeks as Chelsea have chased down a place in the Champions League. The Ecuadorian has done particularly well at right-back, having been moved out of midfield to accommodate Lavia in the starting XI. Caicedo has dropped into defence and operated as an inverted right-back, doing so to a better standard than both Reece James and Malo Gusto.
Given his hefty transfer fee and ability to win back the ball in the centre of the park, Caicedo probably expected to be one of the first names on the team sheet, but his new position in the team shows just how valuable Lavia is to Chelsea. Maresca has picked the former Southampton man alongside Fernández at the base of his 4-2-3-1 formation because he gives the team greater balance.
Lavia has the best pass success rate in the Chelsea squad (91.8%) this season in the league. He completed 100% of his passes against Liverpool at the weekend – as he had done against Tottenham last month (before he was forced off with an injury). The 21-year-old really caught the eye in the 3-1 victory against Liverpool.
Having already clinched the title, there was not much at stake for Arne Slot's men at Stamford Bridge but, even so, Lavia gave a performance that warranted adulation. To not misplace any of his 23 passes against the best side in the land is a tremendous feat. Cole Palmer made most of the headlines by scoring his first goal in 18 games but Lavia was the player who dictated the tempo for Chelsea.
Chelsea fans must be delighted by his form given he had such an arduous start at the club. The Belgium international was restricted to just 32 minutes of league action in his debut campaign for the club as an ankle problem followed by a hamstring injury denied him the chance to consolidate a starting spot under Mauricio Pochettino.
Lavia clearly has the faith of Maresca, who threw him into action on the first day of the season against Manchester City. Further hamstring complaints meant he didn't start another game until the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool in October, two months after his full Chelsea debut, but Maresca clearly wants to pick the midfielder as soon as he is given the green light to do so. Maresca's side can get by fine without Lavia but they are a far stronger side when he plays.
Not only is Lavia a tidy performer in possession, but his press resistance and close control make him the ideal player to receive the ball from defence and start attacks. He gives away possession as a result of an unsuccessful touch just 0.1 times per 90 minutes; to put that in context, Caicedo does it one time per 90 and Fernández 0.9 times per 90. Rifle the ball into Lavia and he will control with ease – a skill that means Chelsea can build from the back without fear of being caught short in defence. For a Chelsea side that ranks third for possession (57.6%) in the league this season, Lavia is the ideal cog in Maresca's machine.
Yet, the 'when he is fit' line from Maresca after the Everton game is telling. Lavia's start against Liverpool was just his 10th in nearly two years at the club. He has not yet completed a full match in a Chelsea shirt and was left out of their Conference League squad due to fitness issues. When his teammates line up to face Real Betis in the final of the competition in Wroclaw later this month, he will be watching from the stands because his manager could not trust him to be fit.
The pros outweigh the cons for Maresca, though. Lavia has proven instrumental in his sporadic outings, none more so than against Liverpool. His availability could be the key to Chelsea securing a top-five finish this season.

Live Boulter and Raducanu vs Kichenok and Routliffe: Score and latest Queen's updates

Latest updates Luke Slater 11 June 2025 11:18am 11:18AM Katie Boulter overcomes serving woes to live out Queen's 'dream' It was a winning start in the singles for Boulter yesterday, despite some troubles with her serve. She overcame Alja Tomljanovic 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 to progress to the next round. 'I feel like I had a lot of emotions today,' she said. 'I think it's very easy to get caught up in just trying to get your first grass-court match. Also coming to such a historic venue, as well, which holds a lot of purpose and a lot of familiar feelings when I have come here before. 'To get the women back here feels very special. It's actually something I dreamt of, having come here the last couple of years to watch the men play, so I'm just really grateful to be on this court.' 11:06AM Good morning 'They' are calling it Boultercanu. The British Nos 1 and 2 (and world Nos 34 and 37) have teamed up in the women's doubles at Queen's. Their tournament got off to a winning start on Monday, with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wu Fang-hsien and Jiang Xinyu. They admitted they were quite nervous before the match, which was played on Court One rather than Centre Court. 'I was actually very nervous before the match,' Raducanu, who has limited experience in doubles tennis, said. 'I don't know if Katie could tell. But probably more nervous than the singles, because I just didn't really necessarily know what to do, but I'm really happy once we got out there. Katie made me feel so comfortable, and I'm just so pleased to get a win on the board.' Today they are in the quarter-finals of the competition, facing Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand. They defeated the all-British pairing of Jodie Burrage and Sonay Kartal in the first round in a tight 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-1), contest. Kichenok has a decent doubles pedigree. She has never made it into the main draw for a grand slam singles tournament but won the US Open in women's doubles last year and has featured in an Australian Open final and a French Open and Wimbledon semi-final. In mixed doubles she won Wimbledon in 2023. Routliffe too has a fine record, winning the US Open in 2023, making the Wimbledon final last year and winning the Tour Finals in 2024, too. Fair to say that this will likely be a tougher task than the first-round match. But Raducanu and Boulter have the game, if they click.

Newcastle in talks to sign Burnley's James Trafford

Newcastle United have begun direct negotiations with Burnley over the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford with the two clubs still at odds over the asking price. Telegraph Sport revealed last week that Trafford was Newcastle's preferred option as they look to sign a goalkeeper who will provide proper competition for Nick Pope, but they have been stuck in deadlock with Burnley over the size of the fee. There are also some fears internally they are being stalled in the hope that another club, possibly Chelsea, also enters the race to sign a player they have coveted for more than a year. Burnley value the 22-year-old at more than £30 million, but Newcastle, conscious of the fact they need to sign at least another centre back and a forward this summer, have been unwilling to match that so far. Talks remain ongoing but Newcastle have warned they will walk away from negotiations if Burnley refuse to lower the asking price. Trafford is one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in Europe and almost signed for Newcastle last summer, only for the North East club to pull out of the deal because of PSR concerns. Trafford has since hinted he wanted to make the move and there is confidence at Newcastle the England international would still like to make the switch. However, the Newcastle hierarchy are still haunted by the memory of their long and public pursuit of Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi last year. Having spent weeks trying to reach a deal with Palace, they were forced to concede defeat when the asking price remained too high. Newcastle remain interested in the 24-year-old but face competition from Tottenham. There is also a feeling that the defender would like to keep his options open until later in the summer and could even decide to stay at Palace and leave on a lucrative free transfer in the summer of 2026. As a result, Newcastle do not want a repeat with Trafford and have also expressed an interest in Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as an alternative option. The talks for Trafford have been complicated by the fact that Manchester City, who sold the 6ft 6in goalkeeper to Burnley in 2023, are entitled to a sell-on clause, thought to be 20 per cent. They also retain a buy-back option although they are not thought to be interested in rivalling Newcastle at this stage. Chelsea, though, could enter the bidding as they also admire the goalkeeper. Brighton's Joao Pedro is another priority target for Newcastle and there has been some encouragement that the Brazilian would like to make the move. But progress on the deal is also slow and, again, there is a gap between Newcastle's valuation of the player and the fee Brighton would ask for. Newcastle are also aware of the asking price for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga having spoken to intermediaries, but are yet to make a direct approach to his club. Manager Eddie Howe would like to sign both players, but has so far been frustrated in his attempts to make an early signing this summer.

Henry Arundell returns to England squad

Arundell, who also qualified for Wales and Scotland, scored a memorable try with his very first touch as an England player when he came off the bench against Australia in 2022. After Eddie Jones was fired as England head coach, Arundell continued to appear under Borthwick through the 2023 Six Nations. When London Irish went into administration, there was no shortage of interest in Arundell but he chose to sign for French big spenders Racing 92. Borthwick was given special dispensation to pick him as well as Toulouse's Jack Willis for the 2023 World Cup and Arundell scored a record-equalling five tries against Chile in a pool stage match. Despite that feat, Arundell did not feature again until the bronze-medal match against Argentina, which proved to be his last act in an England shirt as pressure from Premiership Rugby forced the Rugby Football Union to close its loophole on selecting overseas players. However with Arundell set to join Bath this summer, Borthwick has been able to add the 22-year-old to his training squad with England facing a France XV at Twickenham on June 21 before their tour of Argentina and the United States. Arundell returns to a much-changed England side both in terms of personnel and philosophy. At the 2023 World Cup, England relied upon their wings to predominantly chase high balls, which did not suit his skillset. Despite a great start to life in France where he scored a hat-trick on his debut, his experience with Racing 92 has not always been a happy one and at points this season he looked shorn of the confidence he possessed three years ago. Arundell faces strong competition for places in the England back three spots with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Cadan Murley, Ollie Sleightholme and Tom Roebuck already included in a training squad which does not feature any players from Bath or Leicester as well as England's Lions contingent.
