Alpena-Amberley Ridge shows Michigan wasn't always a ‘pleasant peninsula'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — 'Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam, Circumspice.' The latin phrase adorns Michigan's , which was adopted back in 1835, two years before Michigan was granted statehood.
It translates to, 'If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.' The motto has been part of the state's framework from the very beginning. But did you know that what we know as Michigan wasn't always a peninsula?

Research shows a land bridge, now buried under the depths of Lake Huron, once connected Michigan and Canada and was even home to some Paleoindians.
The stretch is called the , named for the two cities closest to the connecting points: Alpena, Michigan, and Amberley, Ontario.
is a professor at the University of Michigan and the curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at the U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology. He has been studying the ridge for nearly 20 years and has been able to piece together a lot of information about the people who lived and hunted there.

The basins of the Great Lakes were formed when the glacial ice sheets moved south in the last ice age and then filled them as those glaciers melted away. But according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the boundaries we are familiar with today only settled to form about 3,000 years ago.
'At the end of the ice age, you get this weird fluctuation where you get very high levels of water in the lakes, and then you get these very low levels as the openings shift,' O'Shea told News 8. 'Around 11,000 years ago, the lake levels all dropped precipitously, more than 100 meters lower than their modern level. And this exposed huge areas of what's modern lake bottom for settlement.'

'It stayed open for several thousand years,' he continued. 'So what we see then is we see that area being occupied by the resident plant and animal communities, by the local human populations.'
O'Shea said the ridge's outcropping of limestone allowed it to stand taller compared to the surrounding areas that were dug out deeper by the receding glaciers. It also became a bit of a haven of Arctic animals and a fertile hunting ground.
'The other thing that was really curious about (the Alpena-Amberley Ridge) is the climate,' O'Shea noted. 'Because you had this really cold, cold glacial meltwater on both sides, it stayed much colder out there than on the mainland of Michigan or Ontario. The early Holocene (epoch) is seen as a time of warming. So this place actually became really attractive for those ice age animals and plants.'

Caribou were likely around much longer on the Alpena-Amberley Ridge than in southern Michigan and were a key food source for the local inhabitants. O'Shea's research team has found evidence of along the ridge, similar to those found in other areas of the Arctic in that time frame.
'As it started narrowing, the caribou migrations became really predictable. So we found the hunters actually started building hunting blinds and building different kinds of hunting structures to channel the migratory caribou into kill zones. … A lot of them only work if the animals are moving in one direction,' he explained.
Because the ridge is buried under frigid water, the land and the artifacts it holds are well preserved.
Paleoindians and beyond: West Michigan's history goes back millennia
'There has been no further development. There hasn't been any farming, the stones haven't been moved. And because we are so far offshore, about 50 miles offshore, there's also no sediment,' O'Shea said. 'Everything is left pretty much the way it was when the water finally came and drowned this landscape.
'It's a really interesting kind of preserved 3,000-or-so-year-old window that we have to look at this very early occupation of the Great Lakes.'
Aside from evidence of hunting structures and tools and other artifacts, O'Shea said his most fascinating find is some pieces of .
'We found … a couple of obsidian flakes, which are volcanic glass. And what's neat about this volcanic glass is it is very unique to its source. You can chemically source it very accurately. And the obsidian that we recovered from our first site out there actually comes from Central Oregon,' he said. 'So roughly 10,000 years ago, in some way, shape or form, our guys that are hunting on Lake Huron are connected to the Northwest Pacific Coast, which is kind of mind-blowing.
'Just this last year, we found a second site that also has obsidian that is at a distance. So, it suggests that whatever this kind of connection, this east-west connection, wasn't just a one-off deal.'
The 'other' mounds: Lost history is a part of West Michigan's story
But after more than 15 years of researching the Alpena-Amberley Ridge, O'Shea may have to walk away. Late last year, his team was notified that the was pulling its funding, declaring it 'too risky to support.'
O'Shea noted that the decision was announced before the 2024 presidential election and should not be chalked up to the rash of federal funding cuts. But given the current political climate, he doesn't expect the NSF to reverse its decision.
'I kind of suspect, and this is just a gut-level feeling, that federal support for archaeology is not going to be a very, very high funding priority,' he said.
Still, his team has at least one more 'bite of that apple.' Earlier this year, Michigan alum Stephen Klinsky announced he wanted to fund archaeological research at the university, and O'Shea's proposal was selected.
'He was effectively our white knight. I mean, he appeared out of nowhere,' O'Shea said. 'It's our chance to prove that it all really works. There's no guarantee of anything in the future.'

The Michigan professor hopes that people's love of history and love of the Great Lakes will help keep his project afloat.
'There's a tremendous amount of public interest in knowing what happened in the Great Lakes,' O'Shea said. 'People are really invested. People that have cottages or work on the lakes are really invested, in understanding. They're fascinated by how the lake changes over time. How it fluctuates. That's our best hope.'

Why this photographer made a camera lens out of glacial ice

Glacial ice is formed from snow accumulating and compacting over millennia. As the pressure increases, crystalline layers are smoothed into one of the clearest substances found in nature. That alchemy—and the knowledge that climate change is causing glaciers to rapidly disappear—inspired 44-year-old artist Tristan Duke to create a photo lens out of glacial ice. 'I just felt this real sense of urgency,' Duke says. He wanted to capture a glacier through its own 'eye,' as he puts it, like a self-portrait. In the spring of 2022, Duke hauled hundreds of pounds of gear to Svalbard, Norway, including a giant tent camera that he designed himself and molds for shaping the ice into lenses. The tent functioned like a camera obscura: Duke would place a palm-size piece of ice in a hole in the canvas, projecting an image of the landscape inside the tent that would then be captured on a 42-by-100-inch negative. Some of the photographs were clearer than he expected, but as the lenses melted, the accumulation of water produced its own effect. 'People have told me that it looks like the world blurred through tears,' he says. To contrast this Arctic sublime against a world on fire, he traveled through the American West to document wildfires and energy infrastructure with lenses created from locally sourced ice. He wants to invert the romantic gaze. 'We see a sort of fragile nature bearing witness to the unbridled and cataclysmic power of the human world.' Duke gathered ice from around Dahlbreen and other glaciers, and then molded it into lenses that he used to create quasi self-portraits of the Arctic landscape. He and his crew, some of whom he photographed aboard a small Zodiac skiff, faced numerous challenges, including adverse weather, lost luggage, and a bout of COVID-19. Glaciers cleave into bergs when they meet the sea, revealing fragments of clear ice that had previously been compacted beneath layers of snow. Duke crafted his lenses from these fragments. To protect himself and his camera equipment from the harsh Arctic environment, he constructed a collapsible camera tent (above right and below). After he returned from the Arctic, Duke photographed New Mexico's Pecos Wilderness after the Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak fire using an ice lens made from tap water mounted in front of a digital camera. As the lens melted, the camera's focal length changed, revealing new details in each shot. Using ice sourced in Los Angeles, Duke set out to document the slow migration to clean energy. He photographed aging oil and natural gas infrastructure, like these pumpjacks at Placerita Oil Field in Southern California (above), and fields of wind turbines (below) built along California's Tehachapi Pass. While a gigantic heat dome parks itself like an unwelcome guest over a major swath of the United States, residents of the ultra-dense metropolis of New York City are the perfect example of a country so cooked by climate change that it's overwhelming existing infrastructure. More than 3,000 people were without power for a second day in a row in parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, according to local broadcaster PIX 11. Con Edison, the local power company, did manage to restore power to over 34,000 households in the Bronx. It's an alarming example of power grid failures across the nation and world amidst this annual onslaught of intense heat. Utilities in North Carolina are urging residents to conserve electricity in case the power grid goes down, while their counterparts in Maine are also afraid of peak electricity tripping up their operations. The unrelenting temperatures, which has soared over three digits and is considered the first heat wave of the season, should peak midweek for Northeastern cities. "Like an air fryer, it's going to be hot," Ryan Maue, meteorologist and former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief scientist, told NPR. "This is a three-day stretch of dangerous heat that will test the mettle of city dwellers who are most vulnerable to oppressive heat waves." Inevitably it'll cool down, but the threat of blackouts as global warming makes our weather more extreme is dire no matter where you look. Much of the power grid in the United States was built decades ago, in the 1960s and 1970s, and transmission infrastructure has a shelf-life of 50 to 80 years, with billions needed to pay for their upgrades. There has been research to make the power grid more resilient, but something tells us that not much has been deployed; the Department of Energy just issued a warning about electricity usage in the Southeast of the United States. Oh, and not only are we facing the double whammy of aging infrastructure and climate change, but we also need to contend with power-hungry AI data centers. Can we keep up? Good news for skywatchers: The Auroras are coming back! For those in the northern states, the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, are likely to appear this week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center. NOAA tracks auroras using the Kp-index, a global auroral activity. The index's 0-9 scale measures fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field in specific geographic locations. It predicts minor to moderate geomagnetic storms on the sun's surface, which can cause a disturbance in the Earth's atmosphere. NOAA forecasts several states in the northern U.S. will have the best views. If the weather is clear, many in northern states should be able to see the northern lights. Among the states, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center: Alaska, Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
