Miami woman charged in hit-and-run that left elderly man injured

CBS News05-02-2025

MIAMI - A woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left an elderly man critically injured outside a medical facility last week, authorities said.
Miriam Josefa Erice, 78, was arrested Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred around 10:37 a.m. on Jan. 30 in the parking lot of Clinical Care Medical Center, located in the 7500 block of SW 8th Street.
Surveillance footage reviewed by deputies reportedly shows a white Buick Encore SUV striking the victim, Manuel Infante, as he walked toward the facility's entrance.
The video allegedly shows the vehicle failing to stop or yield before hitting Infante, knocking him to the ground and running over his legs, investigators said.
Infante was transported to Kendall Regional Hospital in critical condition with a broken leg requiring surgery and severe abrasions, authorities said.
Detectives traced the vehicle to Erice, who allegedly admitted to driving to the medical center that day but denied hitting the victim.
She was taken into custody at her residence on Feb. 4 and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
The case remains under investigation.

Parents of slain rapper "Baby Cino" sue Hialeah and EMTs over leaked photo

The parents of murdered Miami rapper "Baby Cino" are suing the City of Hialeah and three emergency medical technicians, alleging a disturbing violation of privacy and dignity following his death. The lawsuit claims EMTs at the scene of Timothy Starks' fatal shooting in March 2022 took a photo of his lifeless body, which later surfaced online as cover art for what the family describes as a diss track posted to SoundCloud. The image showed Starks—known as "Baby Cino"—slumped in the passenger seat of a red Altima, where an unknown gunman shot and killed him. Photo used without consent adds to family's trauma Starks' parents, Angelica and Edner Yeye, say the trauma deepened when a close family friend sent them the song cover. The explicit photo was used without their knowledge or consent. Although the image has since been removed from the track, the emotional impact remains. "That is very heartbreaking as a mother," said Angelica Blount-Yeye. "That's a picture I cannot—and will never—get out of my head." The family believes someone among the EMT crew took the photo, which was then leaked. Their attorney, Tobechuku Nwahiri, said that while three individuals are named in the lawsuit, it's about uncovering the truth and holding the responsible party accountable. "If it's one person, there's an opportunity for that person to come forward," Nwahiri said. "Or for the others to say who was involved." Call for accountability and policy change CBS News Miami contacted one of the EMTs named in the lawsuit, who referred the station to the City of Hialeah. The city responded by stating it does not comment on pending litigation. "This is unacceptable," said Edner Yeye. "Somebody's got to be held accountable." Attorney Nwahiri expressed hope that the lawsuit would prompt municipalities and first responders to adopt stricter protocols regarding the treatment of the deceased. "We want to see policy change—to protect families and to respect the dead," he said. The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that the investigation into Starks' murder remains open. No arrests have been made.

MDSO deputy accused of choking woman he met at E11even Miami cleared of charges

A Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy accused of attacking a woman he met at the popular Miami nightclub E11even in late April is now cleared of his criminal charges. On Monday, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office announced 54-year-old Lt. Daniel Chala would not be prosecuted due to the victim's not cooperating with the police investigation. 'After numerous attempts to get the victim to cooperate with the SAO for the necessary pre-filing conference (a necessary part of every filed felony prosecution), the victim refused to assist with the case investigation. This resulted in the dropping of the pending criminal case,' said the statement released by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. READ MORE: Miami-Dade deputy accused of attacking woman he met at E11even nightclub, police say On April 28, Chala was taken into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional on charges of battery and false imprisonment. Earlier that morning, Miami Police were called to the deputy's apartment after a neighbor reported hearing knocking and cries for help at her door, an arrest report detailed. The witness let the woman in and alerted authorities and the building's front desk when she saw her bleeding and battered state. The woman told police that she met Chala earlier that morning at E11even Nightclub, 29 NE 11th St., where they struck up a conversation at the bar before being invited back to his apartment. Once inside, the two began kissing on his bed, with Chala wrapping an arm around the victim's neck and tightening his grip to the point of pain. The woman collapsed to the floor before escaping out the door after several minutes of struggling to find help, the report read. The deputy agreed to speak to detectives and told a different version of events. His claim: after inviting the woman up to his apartment, she allegedly suggested they lie in bed together. Chala, who insisted he was tired, reportedly refused and asked her to leave, denying the two had made any physical contact outside of him kissing her hand.
