Ex-CPS principal found dead on day of sentencing in fraud case, lawyer says

Chicago Tribune07-05-2025

Former Brennemann Elementary School principal Sarah Jackson Abedelal was found dead after she failed to show up for her sentencing in an overtime kickback scheme, her lawyer told a judge Wednesday.
Abedelal, 61, had been scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday morning before U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, who issued an arrest warrant after she failed to show up an rescheduled the hearing for Wednesday afternoon.
At those proceedings, Abedelal's attorney, Jonathan Bedi, told the judge he was informed last night that his client had passed away. No further details of the circumstances of her death were discussed in court.
Ellis told Bedi to extend the court's condolences to Abedelal's family. Assistant U.S. Attorney Prashant Kolluri said that once the death certificate is verified the case will be dropped.
Abedelal was charged in July 2021 in a 10-count wire fraud indictment alleging a seven-year scheme to have employees file for overtime they didn't work and kick back at least $200,000 to her, which she allegedly used for her own purposes including for her car and her student loans.
Abedelal was one of six defendants — including two of her underlings — ensnared in the case, which also involved an alleged scheme to falsify orders for school supplies to provide iPhones, iPads and prepaid gift cards to school officials for personal use.
Abedelal pleaded guilty to a single wire fraud count nearly three years ago. Prosecutors had been seeking a 38-month prison sentence, arguing she 'diverted critical funds meant to further children's education away from a school and school district that were already having financial difficulties in order to line her pockets.'
Among the personal items she bought with the stolen funds were a Tiffany's bracelet, gold hoop earrings, clothes, a Chanel bag, Jimmy Choo shoes, and perfume, prosecutors said.
Abedelal's attorneys, meanwhile, had asked for six months behind bars. In a recent court filing, Abedelal's lawyers said she has a history of mental issues including bipolar disorder and depression, and they asked she be placed in a treatment program if she was incarcerated.

Bottega bags, Van Cleef jewelry, $10K rent: Diddy's ex Jane reveals gifts amid alleged abuse

Bottega bags, Van Cleef jewelry, $10K rent: Diddy's ex Jane reveals gifts amid alleged abuse Show Caption Hide Caption Former Diddy partner says he controlled her with his wealth A former partner of Sean 'Diddy' Combs testified he used his wealth to control her, including forcing her to have sex with escorts against her will. Designer handbags, high-end jewelry and a 5,300 square-foot home. Sean "Diddy" Combs' former girlfriend "Jane" was whisked off into a romance of luxury — but what was the true cost? The woman, who is testifying under a pseudonym amid Combs' federal sex-crimes trial, has gotten candid on the rapper's financial support and the role it played in their allegedly fraught dynamic. Although Jane is speaking in court as a witness for the prosecution, following a subpoena to testify in September 2024, Combs is paying for her legal representation in the high-profile proceeding. She previously said she doesn't plan to sue him. Jane estimates her multimillionaire ex-boyfriend wired her more than $150,000 throughout their relationship, setting up a web of financial codependency. The woman, who worked as an online influencer, claims she was forced to scale back her professional pursuits while dating Combs. As further revealed in Jane's testimony, Combs' lavish gifts underlaid a complex relationship pattern for the on-and-off couple, who dated from 2021-2024. Despite his material affections, Jane has described several instances of alleged physical abuse and sexual exploitation by the Grammy-winning rapper, including being punched, choked, kicked and dragged by the hair. Bottega bags During cross-examination on June 10, Jane's testimony turned sharp when she shared that she felt Combs gave other women more gifts and quality time during their relationships. "You didn't get the Chanel bag this other girl got?," Combs' defense attorney Teny Geragos asked, to which Jane responded, "No, I only got trauma." Jane has alleged Combs coerced her on multiple occasions to take part in "hotel nights," a demanding series of sexual performances in which Combs pushed her to have sex with several men consecutively, lasting as long as three and a half days. Geragos asked Jane how much a bag from the brand Bottega Veneta costs, an apparent reference to the thousands of dollars Combs reportedly gave Jane during their relationship (handbags from the Italian luxury fashion house range from $1,100 to $61,000). Jane shot back: "How much does my body cost?" Diddy's ex Jane testifies: OnlyFans, Bottega bags and a 'cuckolder' Jane gifted Van Cleef jewelry before birthday 'freak off' On June 11, Jane recalled an unsatisfactory birthday in February 2023, during which she alleged Combs arranged a "freak off" — a type of drug-fueled sexual performance federal prosecutors have accused Combs of orchestrating — for the couple to take part in. Jane testified that Combs made a dinner reservation at Nobu that was "conveniently" located in the same hotel they were staying in. "I asked if he can please romance me outside of hotel rooms," Jane said. Geragos pointed out to Jane that Combs arranged a photoshoot for her birthday, as well as gifted her a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet and necklace right before the alleged "freak-off.""I'm receiving my gift, I've taken a pill and I'm waiting for the entertainer," Jane said. "Any type of affection at this point in my life that I get from Sean, I welcome with open arms." Jane says Diddy's rent payments were a 'control tactic' Toward the end of her testimony on June 6, Jane was asked by prosecutors where she currently lived. In a revelation that drew gasps from the courtroom, Combs' ex said she lives in the same home from when Combs was sending her $10,000 each month as part of their "love contract" and that the music mogul still pays for her rent. Moreover, the woman confirmed on June 10 that when she moved into a rental home in April 2023, Combs paid approximately $40,000 to cover the security deposit and rent for her first and last month. When Geragos asked Jane if she believed Combs would stop paying her rent, she alleged he used the payments as a control tactic. "There were some times that I definitely felt that he would do that," Jane said. "And he used it kind of as a little tool. The rent was always just like a little reminder." Diddy trial recap: Ex-girlfriend 'Jane' reveals Diddy still pays her $10K rent Jane's romantic vacation becomes backdrop for 'night of debauchery' After the fallout from Jane and Combs' alleged birthday freak-off in February 2023, as well as Jane's jealousy over Combs' Turks and Caicos trip with then-girlfriend Yung Miami, Jane said in her June 6 testimony that the rapper offered a make-up trip for her birthday to the islands. However, the woman said when she met Combs in Miami, she was dismayed to see his text asking her to "plan a night of debauchery and fun, then straight to the airport." Though she was under the impression there would be no other men for the trip, Combs allegedly turned to her while they were watching porn and asked if she wanted to invite one of the sex workers they'd hired before. Jane said she agreed only because "I became accustomed to the rhythm of things and wanted to make him happy." Diddy invests $20K in Jane's fashion line but discourages influencer career While on the stand June 10, Jane testified that Combs invested about $20,000 in a fashion line she started, which centered on dresses and swimwear. But when it came to her online influencer career, Jane said the rapper was unsupportive. Although Jane at one point had a successful OnlyFans account, the woman said Combs didn't want her to share content on the subscription-based platform, popular in the sex work industry, because he didn't want her to be part of something some view as taboo (Jane said she still joined in 2024). Reflecting on the career impact from dating Combs, Jane estimated that she only met about 10% of her potential earnings through influencing as a result of her devotion to their relationship. Wichita Falls police arrest Dallas man accused of multiple thefts

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A Dallas man faces a felony charge for allegedly stealing from or attempting to steal from several shops in Wichita Falls. On Monday, June 9, at 3:56 p.m., Wichita Falls police were sent to the 3100 block of Midwestern Parkway at Metro by T-Mobile for a man who had reportedly entered the store and attempted to steal a phone. When the officers arrived, they spoke with the manager, who said a bearded black man in a black shirt was in the store, hanging around the iPhones. The manager said when he walked away from the suspect, the man tried to steal the display phone, but he was unsuccessful and left the store to the west. Police said that while they were checking the area, they were informed about the same man allegedly stealing a display phone from the Verizon store in the 3200 block of Midwestern Parkway, Suite 100. Officers said they spoke with the manager, who provided the same description of the suspect as the previous manager. This time, the suspect is alleged to have entered the store, pulled a Samsung Galaxy A16 display cell phone from the mount, and left the store. The phone was valued at $199.99. Officers said they were then waved down by someone who reported the same man described in the two previous incidents allegedly attempted to steal money from the register at Jimmy John's, located in the 3200 block of Midwestern Parkway, Suite 300. Police said they spoke with the employees, who reported the man attempted to take money from a customer who was placing a catering order. Still, the customer stated the suspect did not receive any money. Officers said they found a man matching the description, who was carrying a black and white Nike backpack, walking westbound in the 4000 block of Call Field Road. Police said they attempted to coax the man to come to them, but he continued walking away from them. When the man was threatened with a taser, police said the man stopped walking, was placed in handcuffs and identified as Glenn Earl Thrash II by his driver's license. Authorities said the backpack he was carrying had a TJ Maxx price tag and security tag still attached, and he was also carrying a new Father's Day gift bag full of merchandise. Officers went to TJ Maxx to confirm the items were stolen, and police said store associates told them they saw Thrash pick up the Nike backpack and fill it with merchandise. They alleged he also took a Father's Day gift bag and filled it with merchandise. The TJ Maxx manager said the total value of the items taken was $193.89. When officers attempted to place Thrash in a police unit, they stated that he refused and had to be pulled in by an officer from the other side of the unit. Thrash was charged with theft of property over $2,500 with two or more convictions, resisting, and evading. A records check of Thrash shows he has two previous robbery convictions from 2024, both in Dallas County. At the time of publication, Thrash is still in jail with bonds totaling $54,000. A girlfriend of a New Orleans inmate still at large is charged with aiding his escape

Agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation and US Marshals arrested a former correctional center employee Monday who is accused of helping one of the two New Orleans prison escapees still on the run plan the brazen escape. Darriana Burton was taken into custody without incident in New Orleans and is facing a felony charge of conspiracy to commit simple escape related to her alleged involvement in facilitating Derrick Groves' escape last month, the state's attorney general said in a statement. 'Burton is believed to be the current girlfriend of Derrick Groves. We have confirmed they were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years,' Liz Murrill said. Burton worked for the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office from August 2022 to March 2023, according to Murrill. She does not have a defense attorney listed yet, according Orleans Parish Magistrate Court records, and joins more than a dozen other people already charged with helping the 10 escapees, both before and after they broke out. Special agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation discovered there was 'probable cause' that Burton 'knowingly and willfully' helped plan the escape, which saw inmates removing a sink-toilet combination unit from a cell, use a tool to saw through steel bars behind the fixture, and leave the Orleans Parish Correctional Center after midnight on May 16. During their review, investigators discovered Burton had exchanged text messages and video calls with Groves in the days leading up to the escape. 'As part of the investigation, agents reviewed inmate communications transmitted through SmartCom, an internet-based messaging and video call system utilized by inmates via facility-issued iPADs,' the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit for Burton. 'This conversation remained intentionally vague,' the affidavit said, and appeared to coordinate communication on unmonitored lines to plan the escape. 'It was implied that Burton would initiate a separate, unmonitored phone call' immediately after the SmartCom session ended, according to the affidavit, which alleged that her actions demonstrated 'intentional and active involvement in the planning phase of the escape.' Eight of the escapees have been caught – most of them in New Orleans. Only Groves, 27, convicted last October of killing two people, and Antoine Massey, 32, who has a history of escaping custody, have continued to evade law enforcement. There is now a $50,000 reward for information that leads to either of their arrests, as multiple law enforcement agencies are asking the public to remain vigilant and continue to be on the lookout for the two men. Tips from the public continue to trickle in, the US Marshals Service says. 'The joint investigation between multiple law enforcement agencies continues and we continue to follow up on Crimestoppers GNO tips and develop new leads,' Deputy US Marshal Brian Fair told CNN. 'To those that would aid or hide Groves and or Massey, you are doing a disservice to the community and you may have your own day in court with felony charges in the near future,' Fair said. Last week, law enforcement agencies searched the home where they believe Massey may have recorded a video proclaiming his innocence and asking rapper Lil Wayne and President Donald Trump for help, but since then, the manhunt has gone quiet. 'We will continue to pursue anyone and everyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law,' Murrill said in the statement.
