New Chelsea star's agent confirms 'world class' £49m talent won't play in Club World Cup

Daily Mirror22-04-2025

Chelsea will be one of two Premier League representatives in this summer's Club World Cup - along with Manchester City - but won't be able to call on one new boy for the tournament
Chelsea new boy Estevao Willian won't be available to play for the Blues in this summer's Club World Cup, his agent has claimed. The teenage star is due to join from Palmeiras in the summer, but the switch won't be brought forward.
After qualifying for the Club World Cup via their 2021 Champions League win, Chelsea have been drawn against Esperance, Flamengo and a fourth team which is yet to be confirmed. Original opponents Club Leon have been booted out of the tournament over multi-club ownership concerns, though they have publicly contested the ruling.

Estevao, who turns 18 on Thursday, will join the Blues in a deal worth up to £49million including add-ons. However, agent Andre Cury has confirmed he won't join until after the summer tournament in the United States.
"Yes, he's arriving after the Club World Cup," Cury confirmed to AS. "He's a world-class player. Very good. A guy who's going to make history here."
Cury played down comparisons with Neymar, saying his client has his own style, but backed Estevao to slot right in at his new club. "Afraid of the jump to the Premier League? No, he'll play calmly," he added. "He'll arrive and be ready to play. He's playing very well at Palmeiras."
The Brazilian domestic season operates on a different calendar to that of most European leagues. Palmeiras sit top of the Serie A table after five unbeaten matches, with Estevao setting up Jose Manuel Lopez in a 2-1 win at Fortaleza last time out.
Sao Paulo club Palmeiras will also take part in the upcoming Club World Cup thanks to their 2021 Copa Libertadores success. Their campaign begins against Porto, with their group also including Al-Ahly and Inter Miami.

Back in October, Estevao told The Guardian about the message he received from future team-mate Cole Palmer after agreeing his Chelsea switch. 'When I signed for Chelsea, the next day I scored a goal and celebrated like Palmer. His celebration was trend, very popular,' he said.
'We talked on social media, I tagged him on Instagram, he called me a star, I said he's a star too. He said we're going to do a lot of great things together for Chelsea.'

It remains to be seen whether the pair have a chance to take on Champions League opponents next season. A late comeback win at Fulham on Sunday lifted Enzo Maresca's Chelsea back into the qualification spots, only for Nottingham Forest to climb back above them with a win at Tottenham on Monday night.
They still have away games against fellow Champions League contenders Newcastle and Nottingham Forest in May, along with a game at home to champions-elect Liverpool. All these responsibilties have to be fitted around a bid for Conference League glory, with Djurgardens awaiting in this season's semi-finals.

Chelsea in talks to sign £17m Jadon Sancho replacement during Club World Cup

Chelsea have opened talks to sign a replacement for Jadon Sancho during the Club World Cup, according to reports in France. Sancho was hoping to earn a permanent move to Stamford Bridge after joining the Blues on loan from Manchester United last summer. Chelsea were open to keeping the winger at the club despite his inconsistent form last season but were unable to reach an agreement with the player during contract negotiations. The Blues would have had to spend around £25m to keep Sancho but decided instead to pay a £5m penalty and send him back to Manchester United. Despite this, Enzo Maresca remains keen to strengthen in the wide positions this summer, with the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke all available for summer moves. French outlet L'Équipe say Chelsea have made contact with Lyon over a deal for Belgium international Malick Fofana. Fofana enjoyed a promising first season at Lyon following a £17m move from Belgian side Gent last summer. He featured in Lyon's Europa League quarter-final clash with Manchester United, which the Red Devils won 7-6 on aggregate. Chelsea have reportedly asked Lyon about the feasibility of a deal for Fofana, who earned his first international appearance last year. The interest from Chelsea comes after fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest expressed interest in signing Fofana, who turned 20 in March. The highly-rated winger is contracted to Lyon until the summer of 2028 but it has been suggested the Ligue 1 side could be open to a sale. Chelsea, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season and won the Conference League, are currently in the United States for the Club World Cup. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's first group game against MLS side Los Angeles FC, Maresca confirmed he was planning to sign a new winger this summer. More Trending 'Jadon is not with us so for sure that is a position [winger] we need to do something,' Maresca told reporters. 'We have Noni [Madueke], Pedro [Neto] and Ty [George] only as the proper wingers so something for sure is going to happen. 'When the transfer window is open, for sure, we can do something.' Leicester set their sights on Leeds star as Foxes plot return to Premier League but could face competition for forward from newly promoted Sunderland

Leicester City are weighing up a move for Leeds United 's versatile forward Sam Greenwood as they plot an immediate return to the Premier League. Greenwood, 23, spent last season on loan at Championship side Preston North End and finished the season with 10 goal involvements, including seven goals, despite Paul Heckingbottom 's side struggling to steer clear of relegation. The England U21 international, who was signed from Arsenal 's academy by previous Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, has one year left on contract at Elland Road. And, with manager Daniel Farke looking to bolster his attacking options ahead of the Premier League season, Greenwood's opportunities could be limited. After making 45 appearances last season Greenwood, who can play as an attacking midfielder, out wide or as central striker, is keen to continue getting regular game time. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Middlesbrough, achieving similar figures. They remain admirers but it is his hometown team Sunderland who could emerge as the main threat to Leicester at this stage. Coach Regis Le Bris will have limited funds to work with so is looking at a combination of potential domestic bargains and foreign finds and Sunderland-born Greenwood is on his radar. Eagle-eyed supporters have even spotted Greenwood doing extra training in the area over the past week as he was photographed enjoying a CL Football Academy session alongside coaches Carl Lawson and Rees Greenwood, both of whom came through the ranks at Sunderland. However, Mail Sport understands that the versatile forward has just been ensuring he is at optimum fitness level ahead of a pivotal summer pre-season in his career.
