An international crime gang with 'unlimited resources' operating a 'cell-structure' from Dubai controlled Ireland's record 2.2-tonne cocaine seizure, the Special Criminal Court has heard.
Evidence was also given that a Dutch national arrested as part of the operation 'had worked for the cartel' and was the crime group's 'eyes and ears' on board the cargo vessel transporting the €157m drug shipment.

Prosecutors demand nine year sentence for Kinahan associate drug lord Mink Kok

The 63-year-old is trying to overturn a 2023 drug smuggling conviction Prosecutors in the Netherlands have demanded Kinahan associate and drug lord Mink Kok receive a nine-year prison sentence for his role in smuggling drugs into the country. It comes as the 63-year-old appealed his conviction at the court of appeal at The Hague on Wednesday. He was handed down a six-year sentence in June 2023 after he was found guilty for his role in smuggling 400 kilos of cocaine into the Netherlands in a shipment of bananas. The consignment arrived in 2020 via the port of Antwerp but was somehow mislaid and was eventually found at a supermarket in Remscheid, Germany. De Telegraaf reported that the court saw sufficient evidence for a conviction based on intercepted messages on the Sky ECC server. His lawyer, Mark Teurlings, has pleaded for his client to be acquitted. He claims that there is insufficient evidence to prove that the encrypted text messages were sent by Kok. He also claimed that the link between Kok and the banana shipment is 'factually and substantively untenable.' Mink Kok News in 90 Seconds - 6th June 2025 The hearing will continue next Wednesday. According to De Telegraaf 'the [encrypted] messages discuss, among other things, amounts of money and order lists.' 'In its ruling, the court refers to raw materials and chemicals and blocks of cocaine and cocaine base, payments and locations and required personnel (cooks). "He had a leading and coordinating role," the court said. 'In addition, he had a leading role in setting up what appears to be a large-scale drug lab, given the amounts paid and quantities of chemicals purchased.' The Dutch Public Prosecution Service had previously demanded nine years in prison for Kok but the sentence was lowered as there was insufficient evidence that he also had another batch of drugs in his possession. The convicted drug trafficker and gun runner, one of the most infamous gangland criminals in Dutch history, had struck up a close working relationship with Christy Kinahan Snr when they were both based in Amsterdam in the 1990s. It is believed the pair worked together to import millions of euro worth of cocaine and ecstasy into Ireland and the UK. Kok's son-in-law, named only as Najim Z is also accused by the Public Prosecution Service of being behind the importation from South America of two batches of 750 and 840 kilos of cocaine. These were intercepted in 2021 in the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. Najim Z (42) was previously sentenced for those two coke shipments in a separate case. He was handed down an eight-year prison sentence minus time spent in pre-detention and a detention period in Lebanon. However, prosecutors have demanded another 12 years in prison against him two weeks ago in the case which is completely separate from that of Kok's. According to the justice officials, evidence against Kok stems from intercepted Sky ECC messages. Justice officials say they can prove that there was intensive contact between Sky phones that are attributed to Z and Mink Kok, who were both arrested in Lebanon at the end of March 2022. There was no Sky telephone found with Kok when he was arrested, but detectives say that the investigation against Kok started after he admitted to a TV programme that he used Sky telephones to communicate with others. His lawyer previously denied that Kok was the user of the two Sky phones attributed to him. 'In the messages we clearly read that the user of the telephone would be in the Netherlands, even in Amsterdam,' Teurlings has been quoted as saying. 'So the user could never have been Kok because he was in Lebanon at the time.' Various media have referred to Najim Z based on various judicial or police sources as a 'leader' in Ridouan Taghi's network. Dutch-Moroccan Taghi is regarded as one of Europe's biggest drugs traffickers and is a key associate of the Kinahan Cartel. He was one of a number of high-profile criminals who were guests at Daniel Kinahan's wedding in Dubai in 2017. Along with a number of his associates, Taghi is currently facing multiple charges ranging from assassinations, attempted killings and murder plots. Lawyers for Z have previously contested that their client should be considered as 'the financial man' in Taghi's drug network, as the Public Prosecutor believes.

Young mum (27) pleads guilty to possession of guns and ammunition in Dublin

Sarah Jane Byrne appeared before the three-judge Special Criminal Court today where she pleaded guilty to five offences A 27-year-old mum has been released on continuing bail after she admitted being in possession of a firearms arsenal spread out over two locations in Dublin last year. Sarah Jane Byrne, of Mangorton Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12 appeared before the three-judge Special Criminal Court today where she pleaded guilty to five offences. Her barrister, Keith Spencer BL, told the court that Ms Byrne was dealing with addiction at the time of her arrest. She has been attending a rehabilitation programme and is the mother of a ten-month-old child, he said. He asked the court to order a probation report ahead of sentencing. The Director of Public Prosecutions did not oppose bail. Ms Justice Karen O'Connor set the sentencing hearing for October 20 this year and ordered a probation report. Byrne pleaded guilty that on 16 February 2024 at Old Navan Road in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 she had in her possession or under control a 9mm Makarov semi-automatic pistol and ammunition in circumstances giving rise to a reasonable inference she did not have them for a lawful purpose. On the same date, at her home address, she pleaded guilty to similar charges relating to possession of 27 rounds of Luger 9mm ammunition, a 12-gauge "over and under" sawn-off Beretta shotgun, and a Tokarev submachine gun. Lawyers for murder-accused Sean McGovern to challenge legality of his extradition from Dubai

LAWYERS FOR SEAN McGovern (39), who is charged with murder and directing a criminal organisation, have raised a concern about the legality of his extradition to Ireland from the United Arab Emirates last week. Olan Callanan BL, for McGovern, today told the three-judge, non-jury Special Criminal Court that Michael Staines solicitors office will issue a letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) imminently, putting them on notice of an application. Callanan asked the court to set a date for a hearing. He said: 'The fundamental concern is the legality, the propriety and the process which surrounded his arrival in Dublin.' On 29 May, when McGovern arrived in Dublin and was first brought before the court, Callanan said he was reserving his position on the legality of the process and the jurisdiction of the non-jury court. Sean Gillane SC, for the DPP, told the court that a first book of evidence relating to the charges against McGovern will be ready by the end of July. The DPP will update the court on a second book of evidence at a later date. McGovern viewed today's proceedings via video-link from prison. He spoke only to confirm that he could hear what was being said. Justice Karen O'Connor agreed to set a date for hearing McGovern's application on Wednesday 18 June. McGovern will again appear by video-link rather than in person. Advertisement The court set a date in late July for service of the book of evidence. An Irish Air Corps Casa 295 plane took McGovern from Dubai to Dublin last week, stopping off in Larnaca in Cyprus and Marseille in France to refuel. He landed at Casement Aerodrome in west Dublin before gardaí brought him before the Special Criminal Court where he was charged with five offences. McGovern (39), with a previous address at Kildare Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12 is charged with the murder of Noel Kirwan on 22 December 2016 at St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin in Dublin. He is also charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the same murder between 20 October 2016 and 22 December 2016. He is charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the surveillance of James Gately in preparation for the commission of an indictable offence between 17 October 2015 and 6 April 2017. Another charge alleges that between 20 October and 22 December 2016, he contributed to or participated in activity intending or being reckless as to whether such activity would facilitate a criminal organisation in the murder of Kirwan. He faces a similar charge of facilitating a criminal organisation in a conspiracy to murder James Gately.
