DDA opens swimming pools and launches summer sports camps across Delhi

Time of India18-05-2025

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has made swimming pools accessible across the city to provide residents some relief from the heat.
The authority manages a network of 17 sports complexes with public swimming pools, and it has opened these after obtaining fresh permissions.
These include swimming facilities at the Saket Sports Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex, Netaji Subhash Sports Complex at Jasola, Dwarka Sports Complex Sector-11, Rohini Sports Complex, Major Dhyan Chand Sports Complex, and Hari Nagar Sports Complex, among others.
"These seasonal pools typically operate till the end of Sept. Annual renewals of permissions are mandatory from various bodies in addition to water test reports from accredited labs," an official said.
DDA also maintains all-weather pools such as at
Siri Fort Sports Complex
, which is open for 10 months — from Feb 1 to Nov 30. From April 1 to Sept 30, it operates as normal pool, and for the rest of the months, it is a heated pool, with variations in fees.
A maximum of 80 people are allowed in one session of one hour at big DDA pools (25 metres by 50 metres) of Olympic size and 40 in pools of a smaller size (12.5 metres by 25 metres).
"For the convenience of visitors, we are keeping sessions in the morning, which will be from 6am to 12pm, as well as in the evening from 3pm to 9pm," an official had said earlier.

The monthly coaching charge is Rs 1,250 for each person in summer.
"The pool here (Siri Fort) receives maximum footfall, which is why we did detailed renovation work in 2023 (after 13 years). The Olympic-size pool here has heating facilities, air-conditioned changing rooms and a reception area. Next to the pool is a toddlers' pool. The facility is open in winter as well and has provisions for heating and maintaining temperature," the official said.
Similarly, at the swimming pool in Vasant Kunj Sports Complex, DDA has said that it has ramps and other facilities to allow persons with disabilities to use the facility. "Despite creating many facilities, we are keeping the users' charges very competitive at swimming pools so that people can benefit," an official had said earlier.
Besides swimming, various sports activities are being offered for children of different ages with the beginning of summer vacations.
"Summer coaching camps in badminton, basketball, cricket, football, skating, taekwondo, tennis, and yoga are already in progress at Siri Fort, Saket Sports Complex, Hari Nagar, Paschim Vihar, Dwarka Sports Complex Sector-11, Dwarka Complex Sector 17, Major Dhyan Chand, RSC, Rastriya Swabhiman Khel Parisar, Poorvi Delhi, Squash and Badminton Stadium (SBS) on Siri Fort Road, and Commonwealth Games," stated the authority.
Early this month, the DDA started recruiting professional sports coaches across various disciplines at their sports complexes, offering a revenue-sharing arrangement. "The authority made these preparations to accommodate the anticipated surge in attendance during the upcoming summer holidays, particularly for temporary courses and specific sporting activities. A maximum of two sports complexes would be awarded to any coach or agency in any discipline," stated the authority.
"The difference in coaching rates for members and non-members at all sports complexes will be uniform at 25% additional charges for non-members," the authority said in the notice.

RCB Head Coach Gives Reason For Going "So Hard" For Venkatesh Iyer At IPL 2025 Auction

Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower has opened up on the franchise's decision of going all out for all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer at the IPL 2025 auction held in November last year. Kolkata Knight Riders bagged the service of the player at a mammoth sum of Rs 23.75 crore. The amount itself explains that the buy was a tough one for KKR as other franchises too went behind the all-rounder, with RCB being one of them. While RCB went even over 20 crore for the player, KKR's final bid of Rs 23.75 crore proved to be the winner eventually. After the Rajat Patidar-led side clinched its first-ever IPL title, its head coach Flower revealed what was going behind the franchise's mind while bidding for Venkatesh Iyer. He was a big flop for KKR in IPL 2025. The all-rounder scored 142 runs in 11 matches and didn't get an opportunity to bowl. "We really rated Venky (highly), that's why we went so hard for him. It was because we valued having a strong Indian core to our team. We wanted some exciting young cricketers and a left-hander in the top order. We didn't get him. I would like to think if he played for us, he would have had a really great season," Flower said after RCB's title win in Ahmedabad. Former Zimbabwe cricketer and multi-time trophy-winning coach Flower added perhaps the biggest trophy of his franchise cricket coaching career as he helped RCB lift their maiden IPL title after defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in a thrilling final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on June 3. After ending as Zimbabwe's top run-getter in international cricket with 11,580 runs with 16 centuries during his playing days from 1992-2003, Flower has earned as much success as a coach, guiding top-class Australia and England sides and several T20 teams to championship glory. As England's team director in the late 2000s to early 2010s, he secured an Ashes series win by 2-1 at home and the Three Lions' first-ever major world title, the ICC T20 World Cup 2010 under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood. Two more Ashes series win in 2010-11 (a historic 3-1 drubbing of Australia in their own territory) and in 2013 (by 3-0 at home) followed. In the third edition of Abu Dhabi T10 back in 2019, he guided Maratha Arabians to the title, with experienced T20 campaigner and West Indies icon Dwayne Bravo at the helm of things on the field. The decade of the 2020s brought Andy massive success, as he teamed up with Pakistan's star batter Mohammed Rizwan to seal Multan Sultans' first-ever Pakistan Super League (PSL) title, beating Wahab Riaz-led Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs in the final. Even adapting to the format of The Hundred competition in the UK did not affect Flower much tactically as he took Lewis Gregory led Trent Rockets to glory, beating Manchester Originals in a close title clash in 2022. After some franchise cricket success, a Pat Cummins-led Australia decided to rope in Flower as an assistant coach leading up to the ICC World Test Championship final against India. Australia brought home the Test mace, completing world title wins in all formats and also retained the Ashes after a 2-2 draw in the UK. He was also the part of the coaching staff which travelled to India for the 2023 World Cup and came back home with the sixth title, making his association with Aussies as his most accomplished one, with trophies in both major formats of cricket, Tests and ODIs. Following this win, he took part in the 2023 International League T20 season in the UAE, securing the title with the Gulf Giants under the captaincy of England international James Vince. Now, finally, Flower, 'the man of firsts' for many teams, ended RCB's quest for the maiden IPL title. Several superstars of the game, like Virat Kohli, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, Phil Salt, etc., came together to fulfill this dream. Listen to the latest songs, only on

Imane Khelif skips upcoming boxing tournament after World Boxing's new sex testing policy

Less than a week after World Boxing announced mandatory sex testing for all athletes, Olympic champion Imane Khelif will be skipping the upcoming Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands. The Algerian was caught up in controversy last year when she won gold at the Paris Olympics over her eligibility. The boxer reportedly did not register for the upcoming event in time, and applications closed on Thursday. According to AP, tournament media director Dirk Renders, 'The decision of Imane's exclusion is not ours. We regret it.' Meanwhile, Eindhoven mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem criticised World Boxing's latest policy. In a letter to the Dutch Boxing Federation and Inter Boxing Federation, he said, 'As far as we are concerned, all athletes are welcome in Eindhoven. Excluding athletes based on controversial 'gender tests' certainly does not fit in with that.' 'We are expressing our disapproval of this decision today and are calling on the organisation to admit Imane Khelif after all.' Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting were disqualified from the 2023 World Championships by the Russian-dominated IBA, who claimed that the pair failed unspecified eligibility tests. But the IBA has been banished for decades of controversy. The IOC conducted the last two Olympic boxing tournaments instead, using sex eligibility rules used in previous Olympics. Khelif and Lin were eligible, in accordance with IOC rules. Meanwhile in a letter, Algerian Federation president said, 'I am writing to you following the recent World Boxing statement referencing Imane Khelif being excluded from competing in the forthcoming Eindhoven Box Cup 5-10 June 2025.' 'As part of World Boxing's communications activity around this decision, Imane was identified by name. I am writing to you all personally to offer a formal and sincere apology for this and acknowledge that her privacy should have been protected. To offer some broader context on this, the statement was intended as part of a wider announcement relating to the planned introduction of mandatory sex testing as part of a new policy on 'Sex Age and Weight' that World Boxing is in process of finalising. 'This policy is intended to apply universally to all male and female athletes and is designed to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for all men and women.'
