Kitchee confident of avoiding Manchester United-style decline, closing on new boss
While Manchester United sank farther from competitive relevance this week, Hong Kong's own fallen giants were plotting a speedy return to local supremacy.
Unlike United's decade-long drift to the margins, Kitchee's drop-off has been sharp and shocking. When they won the Senior Shield in February 2024, the interim head coach Kim Dong-jin fielded questions about landing a potential quadruple.
Ultimately, they did not come close to more silverware, and, certainly in terms of results, this has been a season of regression.
Kitchee are a distant fourth in a four-horse title race, and have not reached one cup final.
For delivering the club's first season without a trophy since 2009-10, other than the under-22 FA Cup they won on Wednesday, head coach Edgar Cardoso paid with his job.

Ken Ng Kin, the Kitchee president, said he was in negotiations with Cardoso's prospective replacement, and hoped to confirm the appointment early next month.

'It was my first match and the victory gave me a lot of confidence,' Zhang said. 'I was quite nervous before the match but I knew being anxious won't help. 'The senior teammates, and head coach [Zhao Yong] did a lot to ease me through, the enthusiastic fans helped me settle down, too.' Zhao praised his senior players for guiding their young teammate through the match, and highlighted the extended training time the squad had before the tournament began.

David Hayes ‘thrilled' as Jockey Club confirms it has secured The Everest slot for Ka Ying Rising
It is full steam ahead to the Group One The Everest (1,200m) for a 'thrilled' David Hayes and Ka Ying Rising after the Hong Kong Jockey Club confirmed on Thursday it has acquired a slot for the A$20 million (HK$102 million) sprint on October 18. Talk of Ka Ying Rising heading to The Everest has been bubbling away for most of the Hong Kong season and slot negotiations got under way months ago, with Hayes pleased the deal has been locked away. 'I'm absolutely thrilled it's been finalised and I'm thrilled the club has organised the best deal possible for the owner, which is the most important thing for me,' he said. Jockey Club executive director of racing, Andrew Harding, confirmed the club has secured the Australian Turf Club's (ATC) The Everest slot for two years with the potential to extend. 'The club has entered into an agreement with the ATC for rights to use its The Everest slot,' he said. Trainer David Hayes. 'For this year, the club will use the slot to enable Ka Ying Rising to take part in The Everest. 'In future years, we will use the slot to either facilitate a Hong Kong horse running or to target Australian or New Zealand sprinters to come onto the Hong Kong International Races after The Everest.' The opening-day Class One his superstar snared last year, the HKSAR Chief Executive's Cup (1,200m), is Hayes' only option, however he remains unsure whether he wants to run the world's best sprinter under top weight on September 7. 'I'm going to work him as if he's heading towards [the Chief Executive's Cup]. Last year I went into it with one trial, but this year if he runs he'll probably go into with two trials,' said Hayes. 'If he doesn't run, he'll have an exhibition gallop. But in the back of my mind I'm wary that when The Everest hits he'll be six months without a run, which is a long time.' After giving Ka Ying Rising a month off after he completed his perfect eight-win season in April's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m), Hayes is now beginning to up the sprinter's work. Olympic great Simone Biles enjoys Hong Kong visit, shares snaps on Instagram
Olympic hero Simone Biles showed she was enjoying her visit to Hong Kong, as she uploaded pictures of herself in the city on her Instagram page. The seven-time Olympic gold medallist was in the city to take part in a UBS Asian Investment Conference, where she addressed 600 young athletes as well as fans from the local gymnastics clubs. Biles uploaded a picture of herself standing next to a sign that simply read 'Hong Kong', followed by two images of her at restaurants and another at Temple Street Night Market. Fans flooded the comments on her post with locals thrilled to see their idol in the city and many writing 'Welcome to Hong Kong'. The 28-year-old was speaking alongside UBS Global Wealth Management Asia chair Amy Lo, who had said she was 'thrilled' to welcome Biles for the conference, which ran from May 27 to 30. Biles, who received worldwide acclaim after withdrawing from the team event at the 2020 Olympics to focus on her mental health, discussed the topic of resilience.
