Guardians' ace Bieber will not throw for 7 days after setback in comeback from Tommy John surgery

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians ace Shane Bieber will not throw for seven days and will have his right elbow rechecked next week after experiencing soreness during a bullpen session on Tuesday.
Bieber met with team doctors and consulted with specialist Dr. Keith Meister on Friday. The right-hander was scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday before the setback.
The seven-day shutdown started on Wednesday. He will be rechecked on June 13 before deciding the next steps. Experiencing soreness during rehab is not uncommon.
Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2024. He began his rehab Saturday by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five.
Bieber pitched 12 scoreless innings in two starts last season, was limited to 21 starts in 2023 due to elbow issues and 16 starts in 2021 because of a shoulder strain. He
agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall
with a $16 million player option for 2026.
Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 136 appearances since debuting with the Guardians in 2018, when he was 11-5 with a 4.55 ERA.

Guardians Make Curious Carlos Santana Decision Before Astros Game

Guardians Make Curious Carlos Santana Decision Before Astros Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cleveland Guardians veteran Carlos Santana's trip down the Fountain of Youth is on pause. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt sat Santana against the Houston Astros on Saturday, one day after his impressive 14-game hitting streak ended. Santana went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's 4-2 loss at Progressive Field. Advertisement Vogt instead started Kyle Manzardo at first and had perennial All-Star third baseman José Ramírez serve as the DH. Although Santana turned 39 in April, he's nonetheless enjoyed a strong campaign as one of the league's oldest players. Santana entered Saturday hitting .256 with seven homers, 29 RBI, and a .747 OPS for the third-place Guardians. Cleveland Guardians first baseman Carlos SantanaDavid Richard-Imagn Images Santana is already worth 1.5 bWAR, and he played 57 of Cleveland's first 62 games. Everything considered, that's excellent production for a player who debuted in June 2010, only a month before teammate Jhonkensy Noel's ninth birthday. Ouch. Santana has 331 career homers, placing him in a four-way tie for 121st with Tigers legend Hank Greenberg, ex-Chicago Cubs All-Star Derrek Lee, and unsigned veteran J.D. Martinez. Advertisement Cleveland sits at 33-29, half a game behind the inconsistent Toronto Blue Jays for the American League's third and final Wild Card spot. The Guardians trail the MLB-best Tigers by seven games in the AL Central. Matteo Manassero and Ryan Fox share the 3rd-round lead in the RBC Canadian Open

CALEDON, Ontario (AP) — Matteo Manassero and Ryan Fox each shot 6-under 64 on Saturday to share the third-round lead in the RBC Canadian Open, the final event before the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont. Manassero rebounded from a three-putt bogey on the par-4 17th with a birdie on the par-5 18th — hitting an 80-yard third shot to 2 feet — to get to 14-under 196 on the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. 'I missed the short one on 17, and I did miss a couple more short ones today,' Manassero said. 'I try to think of them just like a shot really, like a driver, like a 6-iron, whatever. It's just a shot. So I don't want it to get in my head, and I don't want that to ruin anything or my attitude going towards the next shots.' Trying to win for the first time on the PGA Tour, the 32-year-old Italian player has eight international victories. 'I try to get a good attitude, a good thought process, talk well to myself. Very basic things,' Manassero said. 'I've matured a lot and I have a better perspective towards, for example, a day like tomorrow." Fox also birdied the 18th. The 38-year-old player from New Zealand won the Myrtle Beach Classic last month in a playoff for his first PGA Tour title. 'To be honest, everything went pretty right,' Fox said. 'I drove it great. I think if you do that round here, you give yourself lots of chances. Had a lot of good wedge shots, holed a few putts early. Just played really solid kind of stress-free golf for the most part.' Lee Hodges, Kevin Yu and Matt McCarty were a stroke back. Hodges and Yu shot 63, and McCarty had a 64. Canadian Mackenzie Hughes (64) was 12 under with Jake Knapp (66) and Andrew Putnam (68). 'I've been putting the ball in play quite a bit, driving it pretty nice,' Hughes said. 'I feel like that's taken some pressure off the putter and the short game. It's a big key around here. You start driving it well, you can attack and be aggressive.' Canadian Nick Taylor, the 2023 winner at Oakville, eagled the 18th for a 69 to get to 10 under. Countrymen Adam Hadwin (65) and Taylor Pendrith (67) also were 10 under. ___
