Major Company Giving Employees $1,000 LEGO Allowance

Companies will often give their employees perks and extra benefits. These can include discounts, free items and even vacations.
One major company is offering a benefit to employees that has rarely been seen, but is sure to make those who work at other companies slightly jealous.
Professional services firm Deloitte offers its employees an annual well-being subsidy of up to $1,000. Employees are allowed to use that subsidy on a variety of items, and recent guidelines have added "Legos and puzzles," according to Business Insider.
The company has offered the subsidy for several years, and recently upped the amount from $500. It's offered to most partners and salaried workers at the company, but interns, contractors and those on a leave of absence aren't eligible.
"Most of the responses are things like 'Lego?!?!? Finally!' or jokes about how they can now rationalize buying the coveted Millennium Falcon Star Wars Lego set," one employee told BI.
Another employee was happy to see Legos added, and said that spending a few hours to build a set "is a great stress reliever." Many employees were reportedly happy that the company was thinking outside of the box when considering what employees could or would spend the subsidy on.
The popular building bricks are just one of the new additions to the policy. Other items and categories added to the subsidy list this year include kitchenware and kitchen appliances, spa services, personal fans and ergonomic pillows.
The subsidy is a great benefit for working at Deloitte, one of the biggest consulting firms in the world. The work is often demanding, with employees reporting that they work an average of 55 hours per week.
"Since you are constantly changing projects and working with different leaders, achieving work-life balance is sadly always variable," one employee said while speaking to Women in Business. "Sometimes you get it, sometimes you really don't."
Ernst & Young, another of the Big Four consulting and professional service firms, offers a similar subsidy that allows employees to purchase items like game consoles and mattresses.
Deloitte had nearly 173,000 employees last year and generated over $33 billion in revenue.

Huge update for iconic fashion brand

Iconic Australian shoe retailer Wittner has been saved from liquidation, with the century-old business sold to private fashion business The Shoe Group. Deloitte administrators David Orr, Sal Algeri and Daniel Demir delivered the announcement on Friday morning, nearly two months after the retailer tumbled into administration in mid-April. 'The proposed sale represents a major milestone for a more than 100-year-old heritage brand, achieved under an accelerated timeline and in the context of a challenging retail environment,' Mr Demir said. 'We have worked closely with the Wittner team to maintain trading stability throughout the administration process and are pleased to make today's announcement to secure the future of this iconic Australian brand.' Wittner has entered into a 'period of exclusivity' with the Shoe Group, which is expected to acquire a majority of the business. The Shoe Group is a privately owned Australian company with its own portfolio of brands and an extensive retail store network, direct online and marketplace sites and wholesale customers. Shoe Group chairman Ian Unwin said his company was 'excited' about bringing in Wittner. 'It is a brand with a proud legacy and strong customer following, and we look forward to supporting its continued success,' he said. Mr Orr said the proposal sale would deliver a 'positive outcome' for employees, creditors, landlord and concession partners. A cocktail of rising costs and falling sales pushed Wittner into administration. 'Growth in sales has been eroded by cost pressures from rising wages and occupancy costs, and more recently challenging trading conditions and supply-chain disruptions,' Wittner said in a statement in April. Established in 1912 by HJ Wittner, the boot store was Australia's first mail-order footwear business. It boasts more than 20 physical stores in Australia and New Zealand, as well as 25 concession stores in Myer and David Jones. Sign in to access your portfolio

Instagram is throwing shy and indecisive users a lifeline with a new update

Instagram said it is rolling out a slate of new features catering to shy, low-key users who want to post without announcing everything to their entire followers' list. Adam Mosseri, the head of the Meta-run social media platform, said in a Thursday news release that users will soon be able to make posts without informing their followers, and rearrange existing posts on their grid. "We know creative expression can feel intimidating, especially when posting something to feed. To address this directly, we're exploring a way to let you quietly post to your profile without broadcasting it to everyone's feeds," Mosseri said in the release. "We'll also make it possible to re-order the posts on your grid. We hope this added flexibility over how and where your content shows up helps you create and share without added pressure," he added. The changes will allow users to "overcome self-doubt and just make it, share it, do it anyway," Mosseri said. It is not clear when the updates will be rolled out. Representatives for Meta did not respond to a query from Business Insider on the matter. Another new update, trial reels, has already been rolled out. This feature allows users to share a reel with non-followers before sharing it with followers. "We've heard from creators that this takes the guesswork out of how content will perform, and our hope is that trial reels will give everyone greater freedom to explore their creativity in a low-pressure way," Mosseri said in the release. The new updates come in an era when Instagram users are becoming more private — posting less on their feeds, sharing more on their stories, and moving to private messaging. "The amount of content people post publicly in feeds is going down across the entire industry because people are moving more and more sharing to stories — which you could argue is a different kind of feed — but even more into messaging, group chats, one-on-one chats," Mosseri told BI's Peter Kafka in May.

Hulk Hogan Attempts to Save Hooters Amid Bankruptcy

Beloved American restaurant chain Hooters is going through some hard times, filing for bankruptcy earlier this year and abruptly closing several restaurants across the country earlier this month. But it sounds like professional wrestling legend Hulk Hogan is doing what he can to try to save the iconic chicken wings restaurant. Hulk Hogan's beer brand, Real American Beer, is spearheading a bid for the entire Hooters of America business, including the chain's restaurants, according to a report from Business Insider. Real American Beer CEO Terri Francis confirmed this move to the outlet as he made it clear that the wrestling legend was all in on saving the Hooters brand. "Hulk Hogan and Real American Beer are fully committed to protecting and revitalizing the iconic American brand Hooters," Francis told Business Insider. If the bid to purchase Hooters is successful, a source familiar with the situation told Business Insider that the group would look to bring new revenue streams to the struggling restaurant, including merchandise. The group would also like to find ways to get customers – especially a younger demographic – to come back into the restaurant. "Cheap beer and fattening wings aren't the food or drink of the younger generation," the person told Business Insider. "Hulk can solve that." Despite the recent struggles, Hooters has continually reiterated that the brand is not going anywhere. "Hooters will be well-positioned to continue our iconic legacy under a pure franchise business model," the company said in a statement to the USA Today. "We are committed to supporting our impacted team members throughout this process and are incredibly grateful to our valued customers for their loyalty and dedication to the Hooters brand." We'll have to see whether or not the wrestling legend will get his chance to help be a part of that journey.
