Not a knee injury, or even a coffee spill, can stymie St. Laurence's Kayla Howard. ‘Made me work even harder.'
There's nothing clumsy about the way St. Laurence sophomore Kayla Howard plays defense.
The 5-foot left fielder hasn't missed anything hit in her zip code. And don't be fooled by the height. You can hit the ball over her head, but don't expect that extra base. She'll track it down.
But there are situations outside of softball that can be challenging. Teammate Demi Lotus provided one pretty humorous example.
'So, basically, Kayla gets a drink from Dunkin' (Donuts) every day,' Lotus said. 'Yesterday, when she came into school, it was dripping down her leg and she didn't notice. She smelled like coffee.'
Coffee?
'Yeah, coffee,' Lotus said, laughing. 'That's why she's so short. It stunts her growth.'
Howard had it all covered Tuesday afternoon for the Vikings, however, in their 11-0 five-inning victory over host Mother McAuley in a GCAC Red game in Chicago.
Lotus, Howard, Aoibhe Landers and Vanessa Kates all reached base twice for St. Laurence (14-4, 7-2). Breanna Cahue struck out seven for the pitching win.
Abbey Williams, McKenzie Cerceo, Kayla Syring and Maggie Welniak each had hits for Mother McAuley (8-13, 3-5).
Howard walked and scored in the first inning, and then singled and scored in the second inning as the Vikings pulled away early. She also kept her season fielding percentage at 1.000.
Meanwhile, she pleaded her case on the coffee error.
'It was my sister (Lexi's) fault,' Howard said, laughing. 'I was holding her softball bag, and she ran into the side of my bag and the lid came off. It just went all over my leg.
'She was laughing at me and didn't help or tell me, so…'
All kidding aside, Howard has a lot to smile about this season. She's healthy and hitting the ball as well as anybody on the team. She's batting .457, with 11 walks, 19 runs and 10 RBIs.
She hits second in the order behind Lotus. They form a one-two combination that creates chaos on the bases.
'It depends on the situation what we do,' Howard said. 'If Demi is on base, coach will have me bunt. Or she'll have Demi steal and have me hit.'
It has been a different start to May, for sure.
Last season, Howard was called up to the varsity for the second week. During a game on May 9 against Lockport, she injured her right knee while running to first base.
'I'd had knee surgery before because my knee kept dislocating,' Howard said. 'In the Lockport game, I felt it pop again. It was difficult because I thought I'd need surgery again.
'I was kind of scared, but it turned out I didn't have to. It got better.'
Howard didn't play the rest of the season. But she still made a major impression on St. Laurence coach Teagan Walsh.
'Kayla has a team-first mentality,' Walsh said. 'Coming off of that injury, she didn't let it deter her. She was so supportive and positive. She was always up on the fence, being a voice for the girls, even though she couldn't be out there.
'She has become a a great role model as a sophomore. She has come back stronger and faster. And she has a great eye at the plate. She sees a lot of pitches. She's got it all.'
And looking for more.
'I've been working on my swing and getting my timing down,' Howard said. 'And if a ball is catchable, I'll dive, do anything to catch it.
'Since I wasn't able to finish last season, it kind of made me work even harder. I want us all to get farther.'

ESPN lays out four potential trade scenarios for Falcons QB Kirk Cousins ESPN breaks down what a potential Kirk Cousins trade could look like The Atlanta Falcons may have the best backup quarterback in the league on their bench. Veteran Kirk Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract last offseason but was benched for rookie Michael Penix Jr. in Week 16. Since the Falcons are giving Penix the keys to the offense, trading Cousins would be best for all parties involved. Now that the June 1 deadline has passed, Atlanta could move Cousins without devastating financial ramifications. The question is whether or not another team would actually pay the veteran quarterback's $27.5 million salary for the 2025 season. ESPN's Dan Graziano, Jeremy Fowler, Ben Solak and Seth Walder pitched hypothetical trade scenarios for the Falcons to move Cousins. Let's take a look at all four theoretical trades below. Trade 1 (Fowler): Falcons-Browns Fowler's trade has the Falcons sending Cousins and a seventh-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for quarterback Kenny Pickett and a sixth-round pick. Cleveland currently has Joe Flacco, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders and Pickett competing for the QB1 spot with Deshaun Watson out (Achilles). The Falcons could strike a deal where they front $17.5 million of Cousins' guaranteed money for 2025, and Pickett would be Atlanta's new QB2. -- Jeremy Fowler Trade 2 (Graziano): Falcons-Vikings Graziano's proposed trade sends Cousins back to Minnesota in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick, a seventh-round selection in 2027 and cash considerations ($10 milllion). Well, it makes sense for all three sides, really, counting Cousins himself. He wants a chance to start and could use his no-trade clause to nix a deal to any place he doesn't want to go. But if he has to be a backup, we know he liked living in Minnesota and playing for the Vikings. -- Dan Graziano Trade 3 (Solak): Falcons-Steelers Ben Solak's trade proposal sends Cousins to the Steelers in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick and cash considerations. With Pittsburgh still waiting on Aaron Rodgers, Cousins may start to look like a more appealing, less dramatic option at quarterback. Cousins is a good fit for coordinator Arthur Smith's offense, which doesn't need its quarterback to move much out of the pocket. This late of a draft pick is close to Cousins' value, and I'd imagine the Falcons are still willing to swallow $20 million -- maybe even more -- of his salary to get this deal done. -- Ben Solak Trade 4 (Walder): Falcons-Vikings In the second proposed trade with the Vikings, the Falcons would send Cousins to Minnesota for quarterback Sam Howell and cash considerations. Howell was acquired by the Vikings during the 2025 NFL draft in a trade with the Seahawks. The key to the compensation for a Cousins deal is how much of his guaranteed money the acquiring team will take on. I'll raise Dan's offer and say the Vikings pay $12 million of it. This would allow Atlanta to save a little face and get out of the situation with a different backup quarterback. -- Seth Walder All four offers have upside, and it makes sense that Atlanta would seek a backup-caliber quarterback to replace Cousins. The team signed Easton Stick in free agency, but he has limited starting experience. If the Falcons could land Pickett or Howell, while shedding Cousins and some cash, it would be a major win for the team.

'[Arth] wrote [Howard] back and said, 'Hey, we were going to give you the weekend off, but this is why we drafted you, because it's the kind of worker you are.' The 6-foot-4, 235-pound signal-caller has the tools to succeed. He stared down pressure well and set the Buckeyes' single-season and career completion records. Advertisement Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden thinks Howard could be one of the biggest steals in the draft. 'I'll go on record here. The Pittsburgh Steelers got a steal in Will Howard. Let me tell you something. That guy is a stud,' Gruden said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. 'I think there are some guys that are pretty darn good in this year's class. They just got to go prove it.' Howard appeared on Ben Roethlisberger's Footbahlin podcast earlier this month and shared one key detail that separates him from other quarterbacks. 'Something I like to hang my hat on is dealing with adversity. I think in my career, at K-State and then at Ohio State this past year, I've seen pretty much every situation a quarterback can see,' Howard said. 'I started off as a backup, and I got thrown in as a true freshman and didn't know what I was doing. I got benched, man. I've been the third-string quarterback. I've been a freaking starter, coming in and winning a championship. And then, you know, having a guy come in and split time with you. I've seen almost every situation.' A fair amount can be attributed to his underwhelming NFL Scouting Combine performance or the perception of being carried by elite talent at Ohio State. Regardless, Howard could have the most opportunity of a Steelers rookie quarterback since Devlin Hodges was thrown into the fire. What happens at that point is anyone's guess. In the best-case scenario, the Steelers have the steal of the draft. In a worst-case scenario, he is a career backup as expected of a sixth-rounder.
