Assam flood situation remains grim: Death toll 12, Modi dials Himanta
The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim on Tuesday affecting 2.57 lakh people in 21 districts, with the death toll rising to 12 in the state.
As of Tuesday night, six people had lost their lives in flood-related incidents across the state in the past 24 hours. The deaths, including that of one child, have been reported from Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Morigaon, Cachar, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts.
Over 94,000 people were affected in the Barak Valley in Sribhumi district alone.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Barak Valley on Tuesday and the relief camps housing affected people in its principal town Silchar.
CM Sarma told the reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called earlier in the day to enquire about the situation in the state.
'… I apprised him of the sufferings of flood-affected people… I have directed the administration to eliminate long processes and provide quick relief… We will help each and every flood-affected family in a time-bound manner. We stand by the people affected by the flood and remain committed to resolve their issues…' he said.
Over 39,000 people were moved to 511 relief camps across the state.
The flood situation also remained critical in Manipur where the population affected grew to 1.64 lakh, with 3917 people evacuated to relief camps.
While the numbers of those affected by the floods continues to swell, the IMD has warned of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over Northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, until June 5, with a decrease in intensity after that.

IMD has issued yellow alert for Barak Valley districts and several hill and upper Assam districts for Friday. The Met office has warned that isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya may experience heavy rainfall on Friday. In Manipur, the flood situation has shown significant improvement, since Thursday morning. Even as the water level receded in major rivers, Army and Assam Rifles continued relief operations under the Operation Jalrahat-II, with 1.65 lakh people being affected. While floodwaters have receded from many areas, the families face a challenge to clean their houses. In Arunachal Pradesh, over 33,000 people have been affected. Six people, including three children, were reportedly stranded in a village for about last six days in Dibang Valley district after a key bridge was washed away. They have been stranded at Mawali village, as the bridge was the only medium of communication.

Caste census will benefit indigenous Muslims, says CM
Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the indigenous Muslim population of the state, residing in the Brahmaputra and the Barak Valley regions, would significantly benefit from the caste census. Speaking on the side lines of World Environment Day event, the chief minister said Assam's indigenous Muslim communities have consistently requested a caste-based census to establish their unique socio-cultural identities. "The proposed caste enumeration in the upcoming national census is expected to fulfil their decades-old aspiration for formal recognition of their independent identity — distinct from broader religious classifications and migratory groupings," he added. Sarma said communities, including the Goria, Moria, Deshi, Syed, and Jolha (Julha) Muslims of the Brahmaputra Valley, and the Kiren and Maimal Muslims of the Barak Valley, consistently maintain that while Islam is their faith, they possess distinctive ethnic, linguistic and cultural characteristics separating them from non-indigenous Muslim populations. The CM indicated last month that Assam govt had begun preliminary steps towards conducting a comprehensive caste census to document and identify the state's indigenous Muslim communities. These communities have maintained unique traditions, dialects, and historical accounts that are intrinsically connected to Assam's heritage and cultural identity.

At 40.8 degrees celsius, Rajkot recorded the highest maximum temperature, followed by 40.2 degrees celsius in Kandla and 40 degrees celsius in Surendranagar. All other cities and towns recorded maximum temperatures below 40 degrees celsius.
