Airbus nearing deal for 100 A321 aircraft with VietJet, sources say

CNA5 hours ago

PARIS :Airbus was closing in on an order for 100 single-aisle aircraft from VietJet on Tuesday, with an announcement pencilled in for the Paris Airshow barring a last-minute setback in negotiations, industry sources said.
Airbus declined to comment and VietJet was not immediately reachable at the air show, where airline staff were witnessed preparing for a possible announcement.
The sources said the low-cost Vietnamese airline was looking to buy the A321neo model. A deal for 100 such planes could be worth around $6.3 billion, according to estimated prices provided by analysts Cirium Ascend.
Bloomberg was first to report the potential deal.
European planemaker Airbus has announced a flurry of deals at the Paris Airshow, the world's biggest aviation trade fair that opened on Monday.
U.S. rival Boeing is expected to have a more subdued show as it focuses on the probe into last week's fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787 and after it racked up huge deals during U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tour of the Middle East.
VietJet, the largest airline in Vietnam, operates an all-Airbus fleet, apart from two Chinese-made regional jets. The airline has not to date taken delivery of any of the around 200 MAX planes it has ordered from Boeing. Airbus is the main supplier of jets to Vietnam, with its aircraft making up 86 per cent of the planes currently operated by Vietnamese airlines. However, export-dependent Vietnam is under pressure from Washington to buy more U.S. goods.

Airbus seals VietJet deal as hopes rise at air show for end to tariffs

PARIS :Airbus struck a deal with budget airline VietJet for up to 150 single-aisle jets at the Paris Airshow on Tuesday, where industry hopes of a return to tariff-free trade were given a boost by U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy. Duffy said he wanted civil aviation to return to a 1979 zero-tariff trade agreement, in one of the clearest signs yet that the Trump administration might favour such a move. However, Duffy added that while the White House was aware that the U.S. is a net exporter in aerospace, it was also dealing with a complex tariff situation. U.S. President Donald Trump's 10 per cent tariffs on nearly all airplane and parts imports are a headache for an industry already battling supply chain challenges and facing fresh turbulence from last week's deadly Air India crash and conflict in the Middle East. In early May, the U.S. Commerce Department launched a "Section 232" national security investigation into imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines and parts that could form the basis for even higher tariffs on such imports. Airlines, planemakers and several U.S. trading partners have been lobbying Trump to restore the tariff-free regime under the 1979 Civil Aircraft Agreement. On day two of the air show, European planemaker Airbus said it had signed a memorandum of understanding for VietJet to buy 100 A321neo planes, with the option to buy up to 50 more in future. The agreement confirmed an earlier Reuters story. A deal for 150 A321neos could be worth around $9.4 billion, according to estimated prices provided by Cirium Ascend. The agreement was the latest in a flurry of business announced by Airbus at the world's biggest aviation trade fair. U.S. rival Boeing is expected to have a more subdued show as it focuses on the probe into last week's fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787 and after it racked up huge deals during Trump's recent tour of the Middle East. On the defence side of the show, Leonardo chair Stefano Pontecorvo said the Italian group had bought a European cybersecurity company to strengthen its position in an area seen as increasingly important in new combat systems. He declined to name the company, saying only that the deal would be announced soon.

Airbus strikes deal for up to 150 planes with VietJet

[PARIS] Airbus struck a deal on Tuesday (Jun 17) to sell up to 150 single-aisle aircraft to Vietnamese budget airline VietJet, as the European planemaker continues to rack up business at the Paris Airshow. The companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding for VietJet to buy 100 more A321neo planes, with the option to add up to a further 50 to the deal in future. The agreement confirmed an earlier Reuters story. A deal for 150 A321neos could be worth around US$9.4 billion, according to estimated prices provided by Cirium Ascend. 'These modern and efficient aircraft have been instrumental in VietJet's growth,' VietJet chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said in a statement released at a press conference attended by a delegation including several Western bankers. 'This landmark agreement represents a vital step in VietJet's growth strategy as a multi-national aviation group.' The planes will be delivered from 2030 onwards, and VietJet said it had financing in place for the deal. Italy's Leonardo buys a European cybersecurity company

PARIS :Italy's Leonardo will soon announce the acquisition of a European cybersecurity company, its chairman told Reuters on Tuesday, as the aerospace and defence group consolidates a business seen as increasingly important in new combat systems. "Cybersecurity is an essential component in so-called multi-domain warfare, where everything is connected with everything. Connections must be secure so that the enemy cannot use parts of a system," Stefano Pontecorvo said. Pontecorvo did not name the company or give a more precise timeframe. In October, Leonardo's Chief Executive Roberto Cingolani said the state-controlled company was looking at dozens of domestic and foreign companies for possible acquisitions, cautioning that no single deal would cost more than 15 per cent of the cybersecurity division's turnover. He had added that the group expected double-digit percentage growth in the cybersecurity business in the coming years.
