U.S. backup Jake Oettinger outplaying starter Connor Hellebuyck in NHL playoffs with Stars up 3-1 over Jets

NBC Sports15-05-2025

DALLAS — Winnipeg Jets fans have showered Jake Oettinger with chants referring to his role as the USA Hockey backup goalie to Connor Hellebuyck during the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year.
Well, that 'U.S. backup' has Dallas on the verge of its third consecutive trip to the Western Conference Final. Oettinger mostly has outplayed Hellebuyck throughout these NHL playoffs and in the second-round Western Conference series that the Stars lead 3-1 over the top-seeded Jets.
'Not personal at all. Just trying to beat a good team. There's a lot of other things going on other than me versus Connor,' Oettinger said after his 31-save performance in a 3-1 win at home in Game 4. 'He's been good and gave them a chance to win, and I'm expecting his best game of the season next game.'
That will be Game 5 in Winnipeg, the first opportunity for the Stars to close out the series.
The 26-year-old Dallas goalie is 7-4 with a .917 save percentage this postseason, allowing 10 goals the past five games. The latest was one he probably should have stopped in Game 4, but the puck slid under his legs for a tying goal a minute into the second period.
'Great response ... unflappable. Our history with him, there was no panic on the bench. They knew that with Jake, that one goal like that, it wasn't going to bleed into four or five, that he had the mental toughness to recover quickly,' Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. 'And he did, and he was our best player the rest of the way.'
Hellebuyck's postseason troubles
While Hellebuyck is the odds-on favorite to win his third Vezina Trophy, that award is for the top goalie of the regular season. It has been another difficult postseason so far for the Michigan-born goalie who soon turns 32 — which would be the day of a Game 7 at home that the Jets would have to force for a chance to advance.
Hellebuyck is 5-6 with an .851 save percentage and 3.48 goals-against average in the playoffs, after a league-high 47 wins and eight shutouts in the regular season with a .925 save percentage and 2.00 GAA. He has lost his past nine road playoff starts since 2023, including 0-5 with a 5.84 GAA this year.
'Every loss is frustrating,' Hellebuyck said. 'That being said, I'm really looking forward to the next one. Leave it all out there.'
It will be at home, where Hellebuyck had a 21-save shutout as the Jets won 4-0 in Game 2. He has exactly 21 saves in each of the four games against the Stars.
Winnipeg has scored only five goals in its three losses to the Stars. Its only lead in those was for 5 minutes, 13 seconds in Game 1 before Mikko Rantanen's second-period hat track.
'At the end of the day, we've got to get him some run support. He'll do his job,' Jets coach Scott Arniel said of his goalie. 'We've got to get him the lead, we've got to get out in front. Make this team chase us, instead of us chasing them like we have in the last couple of games.'
Mikael Granlund had a hat trick against Hellebuyck in Game 4, with a goal in each period.
Oettinger's goals
Oettinger, already in his fourth consecutive postseason, has talked about the obvious goal of wanting to win a Stanley Cup. He also wants to be the starting goalie for the United States in the 2026 Milan Olympics.
'I still consider him a really young goaltender, so, yeah I mean he's special,' DeBoer said. 'He's been to two conference finals now and I think he's looking to find a way to make sure we go further this year.'
Hellebuyck was the No. 1 goalie for the Americans at the 4 Nations tournament in February, when they finished as the runner-up to Canada.
Stars fans in Game 4 got a chance to chant 'Otter's better!, Otter's better!'
'It's been unreal. Just can't help but put a smile on your face when the crowd's chanting your name and stuff,' Oettinger said. 'Hopefully I can continue to play well, and they can continue chanting my name.'

SMU Surges to No. 14 in ESPN's Future Power Rankings

SMU Surges to No. 14 in ESPN's Future Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The days of SMU being a college football afterthought are over. Following a headline-grabbing 2024 season that saw the Mustangs storm into the ACC, make it to the conference title, and crash the College Football Playoff, ESPN's Future Power Rankings now place SMU at No. 14 nationally, a dramatic rise from their No. 22 spot just a year ago. Advertisement This ranking isn't just a pat on the back. It's a statement: SMU's resurgence is real, and its foundation is strong enough to last. At the center of SMU's ascension is redshirt junior Kevin Jennings, who returns for a possible two more seasons. While his CFP debut against Penn State was rocky, throwing three interceptions, his overall numbers paint a different picture: 3,245 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and five rushing scores in 2024. ESPN cites the 'very likely' stability of Jennings at quarterback through 2026 as a major reason for the Mustangs' rise. With offensive coordinator Casey Woods and quarterbacks coach D'Eriq King returning, the continuity around Jennings is a rare asset in today's transfer-heavy landscape. Though SMU's offense grabs the headlines, their defensive line is quietly elite. Returning edge rushers Cameron Robertson and Isaiah Smith combined for 14 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in 2024, while Purdue transfer Jeffrey M'Ba brings SEC size and experience to the interior. Advertisement The offensive line is just as formidable. PJ Williams and Logan Parr, both third-team All-ACC selections, return alongside Savion Byrd, with Arkansas transfer Addison Nichols adding depth. Even with the loss of elite quarterback recruit Keelon Russell to Alabama, SMU reeled in ESPN's No. 30 recruiting class for 2025. Coach Rhett Lashlee's staff has balanced retention and portal additions better than most Power Four programs, reinforcing weak spots without overhauling the core. Defensively, All-ACC safety Isaiah Nwokobia and playmaker Ahmaad Moses lead a unit filled with future pros. ESPN noted that while SMU lost some defensive depth, they have 'others ready for bigger roles.' With ACC competition leveling up and College Football Playoff expansion rewarding depth and consistency, SMU is built to thrive. The only looming question: Can the Mustangs keep Lashlee long-term, as SEC programs circle? Southern Methodist Mustangs head coach Rhett Lashlee looks Miron-Imagn Images One thing is certain, SMU isn't just participating in the Power Four era. They're pushing to lead it. Advertisement Mustang fans, it's time to lean in. The next two seasons could define the modern identity of SMU football. TCU, North Texas announced as base camps for 2026 FIFA World Cup

There is one year to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the organizing committee on Wednesday had a news conference announcing partners, economic impact on the region, and how local universities would be involved. The North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee announced six locations as base camps where teams would be able to train and stay before the games kick off, with TCU, North Texas, Dallas Baptist, University of Dallas, Mansfield Stadium and Toyota Stadium as locations. Organizing committee president Monica Paul explained why North Texas and TCU made sense as locations. 'FIFA is looking for base camps that have infrastructure that are already built in for those teams to train at, and knowing that our universities throughout the region have the fields that are already there, but have the media center, the training rooms, the medical facilities that are needed, I think are critical for them, It's great that all of our universities and even places here like Toyota Stadium as well as I'm sure the new Mansfield stadium facility will have that infrastructure, so there's not a need to augment other operational services,' said Paul. Base camps are for teams traveling into the region and give them a place to train, do media and have nearby hotel space until the World Cup commences, though Paul said they wouldn't know until February or March of 2026 whether all six base camps would be utilized. Paul also said tickets for the events would go on sale in Q3 of 2025, July to September, but that suites and other ticket packages can be purchased at Paul also announced the massive economic impact, as forecast by Deloitte, of $1.5 billion to $2.1 billion. With heightened concerns over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the actions of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Paul was unable to say whether the organizations would be involved in security, but explained how the committee was working with the federal government. 'We're in conversations with the FIFA government relations team we had up in Washington, D.C., earlier in May to meet with Andrew Giuliani (head of the White House's World Cup Task Force) … but it's been set up specifically to address federal questions, working with federal agencies, how they're going to monitor and work with the World Cup,' said Paul. 'So we're going to continue to have those conversations, but at the same time focus on doing what is in our control here locally to ensure we're able to be successful all the way from safety to security to transportation to legacy, sustainability, human rights initiatives, volunteer services, and then continue to engage in those conversations.' CBP has stated on social media that agents will be at Saturday's Club World Cup event in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Paige Bueckers Makes WNBA History in Caitlin Clark's Shadow

Paige Bueckers Makes WNBA History in Caitlin Clark's Shadow originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers has missed the last four games due to a concussion she suffered in late May, followed by an unexpected illness. Advertisement However, Bueckers made her return for the Wings on Wednesday night, facing Alyssa Thomas and the Phoenix Mercury. And despite possibly shaking off a bit of rush, the former UConn star made some history. Coming into the game, Bueckers had recorded 88 points, 28 rebounds and 40 assists through her first six WNBA games played. With 3:12 remaining in the first quarter, Bueckers hit a three-foot layup off a DiJonai Carrington assist, marking her 12th point of the night and 100th of her young WNBA career. Dallas Wings guard Paige BueckersPatrick Gorski-Imagn Images In doing so, Bueckers now becomes the fourth fastest rookie in WNBA history to reach 100 or more points, 25 or more rebounds and 25 or more assists, doing so in seven games, per Polymarket Hoops. Advertisement Only three players have reached this milestone faster than Bueckers: Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, Houston Comets legend Cynthia Cooper-Dyke and former Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker, each accomplishing it in just six games. Clark not only tied this record during her rookie season, but she also broke several others, including the marks for most assists in a single game and in a single season. While Bueckers may not be able to reach the heights Clark was able to, she is certainly off to a solid start to her WNBA rookie season. Prior to Wednesday's game, she was averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists. But, like Clark, she started her career with a 1-5 record.
