Liverpool's Rayan Cherki agreement amid ongoing Florian Wirtz transfer talks
Liverpool boss Arne Slot honoured a previous agreement to meet with Lyon star Rayan Cherki over a transfer to the Reds, but that was before their Florian Wirtz chase accelerated
Arne Slot remained a man of his word by flying out to meet Rayan Cherki, but now he'll be hoping Florian Wirtz sticks to his guns too.
As reported on Tuesday, the Liverpool manager honoured a previous commitment when he met with the Lyon attacker and his entourage for transfer discussions over a move this summer.
There is of course a lot to like about the 21-year-old Frenchman who has turned heads at Lyon this season, enjoying something of a breakthrough campaign in front of goal by netting 12 times - more than double his previous tally in an individual season.
His displays, a more than reasonable asking price and Lyon's acceptance that he is likely to leave this summer have made Cherki one of the hottest properties on the market, and all of the elite clubs want to be part of the conversation.
But Slot, and probably Cherki, will know the young Frenchman's place in Liverpool's list of priorities.
As detailed in The Athletic 's report, the Reds boss had agreed to the meeting before Liverpool made a breakthrough in their attempts to sign Wirtz, and although the lack of progress in what would be a club record move for the German is making some Reds fans nervous, there is still hope and expectation on all sides that the deal can be done.
Liverpool have so far had two bids for Wirtz rejected, the latter coming in at around £109million which was turned down on Friday, but Leverkusen haven't rejected those offers out of hand and instead want to keep the Reds at the table.
That's because the alternative would be to lose Wirtz to Bayern Munich, something that would reduce their already slim Bundesliga title hopes still further, and so the goal remains to sell their crown jewel outside of Germany.
After initially jockeying for position alongside Manchester City, Liverpool got themselves to the front of that queue, and Slot impressed Wirtz and his camp when he put his vision for the player forward.
With Wirtz simultaneously less than inspired by what he was presented with at Bayern Munich, his mind was made up over a move to Anfield, leaving it in the hands of the money men to thrash out the deal.
His only hope has been to get the transfer concluded as quickly as possible, ideally before Germany's UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday, but of course that doesn't have to be a hard deadline.
Leverkusen have raised possibility of the Reds including a player in the deal to bridge the financial gap, but Liverpool are still convinced a straight financial package can be struck.
All parties certainly hope so at least, with Slot's visit to Cherki nothing more than an insurance policy.

Arsenal handed £6m transfer boost as forgotten man completes exit
Nuno Tavares has spent the last three seasons out on loan after falling out of Mikel Arteta's plans in North London and has now signed a permanent deal with Italian side Lazio Arsenal's forgotten man, Nuno Tavares, has completed a permanent move to Italian side Lazio. The Portuguese international, who spent last term on loan with the Serie A side, moves in a £6million deal. He has signed a three-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico. The 25-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021 from Benfica in an £8million move, making 28 appearances in all competitions. But he never looked an ideal fit at left-back for Mikel Arteta's side, combining occasional thrilling attacking forays with somewhat haphazard defending. As new arrivals in that role followed, Tavares was cast aside, heading on loan to Monaco, then Nottingham Forest and most latterly Lazio. In the Italian capital he has impressed, operating as a wing-back and thrusting his way into the Portugal national team, winning his first senior international cap when he came on as a substitute in Portugal's 5-1 win against Poland in the UEFA Nations League last November. An Arsenal statement said: "Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Nuno for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future." Tavares will be joined at Lazio this season by the returning former Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri - who has rejoined the club 15 months after leaving. Sarri, 66, is back at the helm, replacing Marco Baroni, who led Lazio to a seventh-place finish last term - missing out on European qualification. Sarri resigned in March 2024 after five defeats in six games and voicing his displeasure at the club's transfer policy, following three years in charge - during which time he led them to a second place finish, their best since winning the title in 2000. Lazio president Claudio Lotito said in a statement earlier this week: "Maurizio Sarri has returned home. "His return is a choice of heart, conviction and vision. With him we want to resume a path that was interrupted too soon, aware that together, we can bring back enthusiasm, identity and ambition. "Welcome back to your home, commander."

Chelsea near agreement with fourth transfer target after £30m Delap deal
Chelsea are not willing to meet Eintracht Frankfurt's £84m (€100m) asking price for striker Hugo Ekitike, who is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge this summer Sources close to Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike have indicated that talks with Chelsea over personal terms are now well advanced. The highly-coveted 22-year-old has also caught the eye of Liverpool after hitting 22 goals in all competitions last season in Germany. Chelsea have now held discussions with Frankfurt over a deal but the Blues have made it clear they are not willing to match the Bundesliga outfit's steep £84million (€100m) asking price. Eintracht believe they're in a strong negotiating position after securing Champions League qualification and after banking £59m for Manchester City attacker Omar Marmoush in January, they feel under no immediate pressure to sell. Enzo Maresca's UEFA Conference League winners remain interested in Ekitike despite confirming the £30m capture of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap on Wednesday night. They have held several rounds of talks with Ekitike's representatives over the past few weeks and the player is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, providing a club-to-club agreement can be struck between the parties. Newcastle agreed a £25.6m to sign the France U21 international in June 2022 before he later moved to Paris Saint-Germain, who are entitled to 20 per cent of the capital gain thanks to a sell-on clause. Ekitike recently withdrew from the France U21 squad for the European Championships due to a back problem as Les Bleus medical staff did not feel the striker would be ready to feature from the start of the tournament. Frankfurt are notoriously stubborn negotiators and Chelsea will only proceed if they feel a deal can be struck on realistic terms. At this moment in time, the picture is somewhat complex but the expectation remains that Ekitike will leave Eintracht this summer. The German club do also hold an interest in two Strasbourg players, Swedish forward Sebastian Nanasi and Dilane Bakwa and they've also tracked Emanuel Emegha over the course of the past 12 months. However, suggestions Chelsea could seek to use Strasbourg players in a potential deal for Ekitike are thought to be hypothetical at this stage. Emegha is expected to remain at Strasbourg this summer despite widespread interest from both the Premier League and Europe and Chelsea are understood to be considering negotiating a pre-agreement for the Dutchman to move to west London in 2026. Should Ekitike arrive, he would become Chelsea's fourth arrival this summer. As well as signing Delap, the Blues have also secured the services of Estevao Willian from Palmeiras and Sporting's Dario Essugo. Meanwhile, Chelsea are continuing to pursue England U21 winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens after opening talks with Borussia Dortmund and they're still open to signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, providing the Rossoneri reduce their demands. Maignan is thought to be open to joining Chelsea this summer but the Blues are now willing to pay over the odds for the 29-year-old given he's approaching the final 12 months of his contract at San Siro.

Florian Wirtz gives telling response to Liverpool question after Germany clash
Liverpool are looking to finalise a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, with the 22-year-old playmaker appearing to be keen on a move to Anfield this summer Florian Wirtz appears to have confirmed he is "excited" to join Liverpool this summer, with the Reds having seen two bids rejected by Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool's last bid was a package that totalled around £109.6million, but it was knocked back as Leverkusen value Wirtz at £126m. Talks are ongoing between the two clubs and it is widely expected that they will reach an agreement, with the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich having pulled out of the race for the 22-year-old. Despite the ongoing speculation about his future, Wirtz started for Germany as they were beaten 2-1 by Portugal in their UEFA Nations League semi-final clash on Wednesday with manager Julian Nagelsmann insisting the player has not been affected by the situation. "Flo will play," Nagelsmann said ahead of the game, which saw Wirtz score Germany's only goal. "I don't sense any fear of injury or anything with him. He's a competitor who wants to play and be successful with us." And after the match, Wirtz appeared to drop a hint about the transfer talks while walking through the mixed zone. When asked by the Daily Mail if he was "excited for Liverpool", Wirtz looked over and gave a nod. Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen and the club's managing director Simon Rolfes recently said: "It's currently an open subject with Florian. "There is concrete interest from Liverpool, but there's no more to say right now. Florian is our player." And fellow Leverkusen star Nathan Tella has backed Wirtz to succeed at Anfield if the Reds can finalise a deal for the playmaker. "He's great as well, you can see his ability every time he gets on the ball," Tella told Sky Sports earlier this month. "He's one of those players between the lines, he dribbles, he can create passes, he can score. For me as a forward he's great to play with. He's a very creative player, someone who can change the game just like that. "He has so much talent, so much technical ability, he has an eye for goal, he's just a brilliant, a proper number 10. They should look forward to watching him (if he leaves)."
