Deer species listed as extinct in the wild born at Southern California zoo

Yahoo12-05-2025

The Père David's Deer is making a comeback, as a fawn was just born in Southern California.
The male fawn was born at the San Diego Zoo on April 8 and is the first of its kind to be born at the zoo's Safari Park in 22 years, according to officials.
'In the first one to two weeks of life, the fawn's mother kept him hidden, just as she would in native habitats. She visited the fawn several times throughout the day to groom and nurse until he was strong enough to keep up with the rest of the herd,' the San Diego Zoo explained in a media release. 'He is now exploring the expansive Asian Plains habitat alongside the other species that live there, including other deer, antelope, wild cattle, and rhinoceros.'
Père David's Deer, which are native to China, were facing extinction by the 19th century due to floods, war and hunting, although a few were kept on the personal grounds of the Chinese Emperor. They were introduced to the Western world by Père (Father) Armand David, for whom the species is named in the West; it is known as milu in China.

David was able to expatriate some of the deer to European zoos where they bred successfully, but according to the San Diego Zoo, the European herds dwindled during World War II due to disease and lack of food. One herd, however, survived; it was owned by Herbrand Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford, and offspring from the herd were sent to zoos across the world, essentially saving the species from extinction.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies Père David's Deer (Elaphurus davidianus) as Extinct in the Wild and the species has been on their Red List of Threatened Species since 2016. Although the deer have been reintroduced into the wild and are slowly growing in population – there are now 53 herds in China, per IUCN – the species remains on the Red List due to concerns about the population's long term viability.
World-renowned zoologist Jane Goodall spoke about her experience with Père David's Deer in her book 'Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species Are Being Rescued from the Brink,' calling the species 'magnificent' and reminiscing on a time where she visited the duke's estate to view them.
'The first time I was able to see this rare and beautiful deer in its native homeland was in 1994…How magnificent they looked grazing near the shore of the lake…one handsome male stood, seeming to look directly at me, proud and dignified,' Goodall wrote in the 2009 book. 'I vividly remember visiting a herd of these deer on the Duke of Bedford's estate in England, and hearing that they were highly endangered and came from China. That was in 1956…now, forty years later, I was looking at some of the progeny of those very deer.'

Who is Poland's next president Karol Nawrocki?

By Anna Wlodarczak-Semczuk and Justyna Pawlak WARSAW (Reuters) -Karol Nawrocki, the conservative historian who won Poland's presidential election, cultivated a tough-guy image during his campaign, posting videos of himself at shooting ranges and boxing rings. While his liberal opponent Rafal Trzaskowski played up his European credentials, Nawrocki met Donald Trump at the White House and received the U.S. president's backing for his bid for Poland's top job. According to the final result from the electoral commission, Nawrocki won the election with 50.89% of the votes. Unlike other eurosceptics in central Europe, such as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico or Hungary's Viktor Orban, Nawrocki supports giving military aid to help Ukraine fend off Russia's three-year-old invasion. But he has said that, if elected, he will oppose membership in Western alliances for Ukraine, a position that seeks to chime with falling support for Ukrainians among Poles, who have hosted more than a million refugees from across the border. His backers in the Law and Justice (PiS) party had supported fast-tracking membership in the EU and NATO for Kyiv while in power until late 2023. Nawrocki's critics said he was fuelling unease over Ukrainian refugees at a time when the far-right is highlighting migration, the cost of living and security. He cited his campaign slogan, Poland First. "Let's help others, but let's take care of our own citizens first," he said on social media in April. He is likely to follow a similar path to outgoing President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally who has used his veto power to block the pro-EU government's efforts to undo the previous PiS administration's judicial reforms. The EU says the PiS reforms undermined the independence of the courts. THE FIGHT IN THE RIGHT In the last two weeks, the candidates mostly fought for the support of people who voted for other candidates in the first round, in particular far-right's Slawomir Mentzen who came third with 15% support. Trzaskowski tried to attract them with promises of deregulation. Nawrocki touted his credentials as head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), support for gun ownership, traditional families and Christian values, but also a critical tone on Ukraine, in sync with Mentzen's. His wife Marta, a civil servant, and three children featured strongly in his campaign. Nawrocki's past has been a topic of intense public debate following a series of negative media reports. There were questions over his acquisition of a flat from a pensioner and an admission that he took part in orchestrated brawls. "All my sports activities were based on the strength of my heart, the strength of my muscles, my fists," Nawrocki, an amateur boxer, told a debate when confronted over reports he had been involved in mass organised fights between football hooligans. "It was a fair competition, regardless of the form." His Law and Justice party backers have accused the government of orchestrating the controversies with the help of Poland's special services and liberal media. The government rejects these accusations. Nawrocki portrayed the election as a referendum on the government, which he described as a metropolitan elite out of touch with their concerns. "I am simply one of you," he told voters in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska while on the campaign trail.

Russian secret services try to recruit Ukrainians in Europe

Russian secret services are actively trying to recruit Ukrainian citizens in European Union countries to involve them in illegal activities. Source: press service of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence Quote: "Russian secret services have intensified their attempts to recruit Ukrainian citizens with the aim of involving them in illegal activities on the territory of European Union countries. Potential perpetrators are offered monetary rewards for participating in illegal activities, conducting surveillance of critical infrastructure, and performing other tasks for the benefit of the aggressor state. This mainly concerns Ukrainians from temporarily occupied territories who find themselves in difficult circumstances." Details: Ukraine's Defence Intelligence noted that the recruitment of Ukrainians to carry out hostile scenarios in Europe was another tool of hybrid aggression that Russia is waging against Ukraine and the entire European community. Ukrainian intelligence urged anyone who was approached by suspicious individuals to immediately contact the law enforcement agencies of their country of residence or Ukrainian diplomatic missions. New music festival and charity event honors late local radio host

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A beloved radio host still lives on through a new music festival he started years ago. It's been just over two years since the passing of Wichita Falls radio personality Scotty Preston, also known as Scotty P. In his honor, his wife, Missy Scherer, brought back the Chick'n and Pick'n music festival, paired up with a charity effort. 'He asked me, you're my legacy now. And I want you to continue doing good things in my name,' Scherer said. Through Sunday afternoon, the Crazy Horse Saloon was home to music and dancing, all the while raising money to send to Homeless Lives Matter, a venture Scherer said Preston would have been all in on. 'He would volunteer to help you know, in any event, any situation, friend. He was the first one there,' Scherer said. This isn't the first Chick'n and Pick'n ever. Preston originally held the festival at a venue called The Outskirts to help promote up-and-coming artists. For those who performed at previous installments, like Toby Wayne, performing at the new Chick'n and Pick'n brought back a lot of memories. 'That nostalgia comes back, and you know, it hits you and some of the people that I haven't seen actually since Chick'n and Pick'n was going on that came out specifically for that event, they're out here tonight and I haven't seen them in that long,' Wayne said. Luke Robinson, another performing artist, says the new version of the festival, with the added charity spin, would make Preston feel right at home. 'He certainly had a passion, too, I think, for helping people when people were in need,' Robinson said. 'And having these fundraisers and being able to have some live music and to bring people together for that, that was a big deal for Scotty.' Whether it's helping new artists or giving to charity, the latest edition of Chick'n and Pick'n did Scotty P's legacy proud. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
