Unbeaten PSG held to 1-1 draw at Nantes

Reuters22-04-2025

April 22 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Nantes on Tuesday, keeping the Ligue 1 champions on course to become the first team to go unbeaten through an entire season in the French top flight.
In a slow first half the hosts were content to sit back and play on the counter, but Vitinha struck a low half-volley off a Lee Kang-in pass to put PSG ahead after 33 minutes.
Nantes looked more aggressive after the break as Jean-Charles Castelletto drew a fine save from PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on the hour mark.
Douglas Augusto finally found the equaliser seven minutes from time with a great shot from the edge of the box following a great run from Matthis Abline.
Goncalo Ramos went agonisingly close to netting a winner for the visitors, but his stoppage-time header hit the crossbar.
PSG, who wrapped up the title earlier this month, hold a 23-point advantage over second-placed Olympique de Marseille, while Nantes are 14th on 31 points, four points above the drop zone.

PSG urged to sign £65m Arsenal star and Liverpool transfer flop

PSG have been told to raid Arsenal and Liverpool to strengthen a squad that just lifted the Champions League trophy. Paris Saint-German enjoyed a spectacular season under Luis Enrique, finally succeeding in their quest to become European champions while continuing to dominate in Ligue 1. Given PSG's young and incredibly dynamic squad, areas of improvement are not obvious but Marcel Desailly has named two players he would 'like' to see arrive at the Parc des Princes this summer. Football icon Desailly somewhat surprisingly believes Arsenal forward Kai Havertz should be PSG's No. 1 transfer target, citing his versatility as the main reason he would be of use to Enrique. Signed from Chelsea for £65m in 2023, Havertz has endured a mixed spell at the Emirates Stadium but was badly missed last season as Mikel Arteta had to deal with an injury crisis. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Havertz's status as Arsenal's first-choice striker looks set to end this summer as Arteta targets a new No. 9 with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres heavily linked with moves to north London. Desailly believes Havertz would be the 'best transfer option' for PSG and has also urged the Champions League holders to rescue Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. The Uruguayan is expected to move on this summer following a largely underwhelming spell at Anfield and Desailly reckons he can revive his career in Paris. Like Arsenal, Liverpool are also interested in signing a new striker to strengthen Arne Slot's Premier League champions and are open to offers for Nunez. 'There are two players I'd like to see at PSG and one is Kai Havertz from Arsenal,' France World Cup winner Desailly told Oddspedia. 'Havertz is the best option because he can play as a midfielder but also as a point of reference up front as a striker. 'For me Havertz would be the best signing for PSG and the other is Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. 'Nunez is a point of reference and has great movement, he has been unlucky in front of goal but I think he'd do well in a back-up role for PSG. 'Those are the two players I'd like to see join PSG this summer.' While PSG look to strengthen Enrique's squad, a number of players have been linked with moves away from the French capital. More Trending Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos while Gianluigi Donnarumma has also emerged as a target for the Red Devils. PSG beat United to the signing of Ramos two years ago but the 23-year-old has struggled for starts since arriving from Benfica. Donnarumma, meanwhile, has entered the final 12 months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and is believed to be interested in a move to the Premier League. The 26-year-old Italian reminded fans why he is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during PSG's brilliant Champions League run. For more stories like this, check our sport page. How 9 ex-Chelsea stars have fared at Arsenal as Gunners edge close to £5m deal

Arsenal are poised to sign another Chelsea player in the summer transfer window - and they have a long history of doing so, with Kepa Arrizabalaga ready to follow in the footsteps of others Arsenal have made a habit out of signing players from their rivals Chelsea in recent years – and they are close to repeating the trick. The Gunners are in the market for a back-up goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and Chelsea have what they need. This time it is Kepa Arrizabalaga who appears set to make the switch between the London rivals, with a £5million transfer lined up. Kepa spent last season on loan with Bournemouth and, after Neto returned to the Cherries following a campaign with Arsenal, they are now eyeing the Spaniard. ‌ He moved to Stamford Bridge in a £72m deal seven seasons ago from Athletic Bilbao, but is now available for a cut-price fee. Should the deal go through, Kepa will provide competition to his compatriot David Raya in north London. ‌ It remains to be seen how the move will go down – but Kepa is following in a long line of Chelsea players to move to Arsenal. Here Mirror Football takes a look at how his predecessors have fared. William Gallas The ultimate in controversial moves between London clubs. Gallas swapped Chelsea for Arsenal in 2006 after winning back-to-back Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho. Things went sour – and after reportedly threatening to score an own goal if selected – he left for Arsenal. Never one to hide from the spotlight, Gallas was often the main character during his time at Arsenal, where he made 142 appearances and scored 17 goals. Best remembered for his infamous strop against Birmingham in February 2008, when he sat down on the pitch. Lassana Diarra Hardly a memorable move. Diarra struggled at Chelsea and then struggled at Arsenal. The French midfielder made just seven league appearances in 2007/08 before being flogged to Portsmouth five months later. Petr Cech A fantastic move for Arsenal. Cech won 15 trophies in 11 years at Chelsea, yet his status as a blue didn't undermine his work as a Gunner. He won the Golden Glove during his first season at Arsenal after keeping 16 Premier League clean sheets in 2015/16, stayed for four years and won the FA Cup with the Gunners. ‌ Yossi Benayoun The Israel international, who also played for West Ham and Liverpool, moved on loan from Chelsea to Arsenal for the 2011/12 season. He got six goals and three assists in 25 appearances across all competitions as Arsenal finished third. Willian Here's one that didn't work out. Willian enjoyed a very productive time at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League in seven years with the club. But when they wouldn't give him a new three-year deal, he opted to join Arsenal on a free transfer. ‌ The Gunners handed out a three-year deal and were made to regret it. He finished the 2020/21 season with just one goal in 37 appearances across all competitions and that was that. David Luiz A very divisive player. The Brazilian centre-back, who was known for his passing ability and penchant for shooting from distance, swapped Chelsea for Arsenal in 2019, like Cech. He lasted two seasons in north London after signing for £8m. ‌ While there were the typical moments of madness, including three red cards and conceding six penalties in his 53 Premier League appearances for the club, there were some good times too. Luiz helped Arsenal win the FA Cup and was a well-liked member of the dressing room before leaving for Flamengo in 2021. Jorginho Mikel Arteta was very keen to land Jorginho in 2023, with the Italy international's experience and leadership rated highly by the Arsenal boss. He got his man and Jorginho stayed for two seasons, becoming a key player in midfield alongside Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey. The 33-year-old has now left for Flamengo, but his influence is greater than many players who only played two seasons at the club. ‌ Kai Havertz The £65m Arsenal paid Chelsea to sign Havertz in June 2023 was widely ridiculed at the time, with fans confused why Arteta would sanction such a spend on a utility forward who, while a good player, wasn't a world-class one. He's shown why in the following two years, becoming a real fan-favourite with his own chant that references the transfer fee. Havertz has 29 goals and 13 assists in 87 matches for Arsenal – not far off the tally of 32 goals, 16 assists that he managed in 139 games for Chelsea – and his importance to the side was obvious when he was injured at the back end of the 2024/25 season. ‌ Raheem Sterling Arteta was behind this deal, too, having worked with Sterling during his time as a coach at Manchester City. Sterling joined Arsenal on loan for the 2024/25 season but never found his feet, with one goal and five assists in 28 appearances all that the Gunners got from the move. Sterling was scarcely used by Arteta, who frequently left him on the bench, leaving fans to wonder why the loan was sanctioned in the first place.

PSG president explains strict transfer rule Luis Enrique says they must follow

Luis Enrique has changed the way that Paris Saint-Germain approach transfers, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi explaining how they now conduct business under the Spanish manager Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has explained the rule Luis Enrique has enforced since joining the club that helped them win the Champions League. PSG claimed their maiden title in the competition by destroying Inter Milan 5-0 on May 31 – and a great deal of the credit went to manager Enrique. The French giants had faltered in Europe's premier club competition in previous years, but triumphed with a team packed full of young guns. Their new look under Enrique was highlighted by Desire Doue – the 20-year-old attacker who scored twice in the final. ‌ He was signed from Rennes for €50million (£42m) in August 2024 to form a part of the young spine of Enrique's side. PSG also signed Joao Neves (19), William Pacho (22) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24) during the 2024/25 season, all of whom started the thrashing of Inter. ‌ Al-Khelaifi says that focus on youth will continue while Enrique remains the manager. "He is the best coach to develop young players,' he told Qatari broadcaster Al-Kass. 'He likes young players. For example, buying a 28 or 27-year-old player is impossible for him, forbidden, he absolutely does not want it. 'He likes all players who are 21 or 22 years old. Have you noticed the latest players we have recruited? The oldest is 23 or 24, no more. "Luis Enrique likes a fighting spirit, he likes a player who gives his all, who runs a lot on the pitch, who is generous in his effort. How do we work? [Sporting director] Luis Campos has to present the player to the coach. The coach has to study how he plays, his value, his price and other aspects. 'There has to be an agreement, an agreement between everyone, even if each has their role. For everything that concerns scouting, it is Luis Enrique who has to approve the player. He has to be convinced that the player fits into his future project. Then, we, the management, also give our approval.' HAVE YOUR SAY! Can PSG sustain their form next season? Comment below. ‌ Al-Khelaifi also used the interview to fire shots at former PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer, only to end his debut season trophyless. PSG won the treble without him, with Enrique claiming the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Champions League to give his president ammunition. "It's easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1," Al-Khelaifi said. "Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League fans who called it the Farmers' League. "We ended up beating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League this season. Nobody thought we would win the title. We approached the Champions League step by step.'
