Yahoo31-01-2025

NASCAR legends Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, Ken Schrader and Bobby Labonte will join Danny Sullivan and Scott Pruett to compete in the IROC race group during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 13-16 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Ray Evernham, co-owner of IROC and former crew chief for Jeff Gordon from 1993 to 1999, is eager to reunite the cars with many of their original drivers.
'I think this is the first time several of these drivers, including Jeff Gordon, have raced at Laguna Seca, and to do so during the renowned Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is something I know they will enjoy,' said Evernham. 'I'm also excited to give fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with our drivers and the incredible group of IROC cars that will be on display.'
Two drivers who may have a leg up with their extensive experience racing at Laguna Seca is McLaren Racing's CEO Zak Brown and Friends of Laguna Seca Vice President Bruce Canepa. Brown recently acquired the 1977 Chevrolet IROC Camaro that was originally driven by Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Alan Jones, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, James Brolin and Paul Newman, while Canepa will be driving a Dodge Avenger formerly driven by Dale Earnhardt, George Follmer, Emerson Fittipaldi, Richard Petty and various other motorsports icons.
'I'm so pumped that they're bringing back the iconic IROC series, when we used to be able to answer the question of who was the best of the best! Can't wait to get it out on the track,' Brown announced on social media.
Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon, has raced nearly every circuit in his 30-year racing career and amassed 93 wins, 477 top 10 finishes and 81 poles while racing for Hendrick Motorsports. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019.
Five-time IROC Series champion Mark Martin's 31-year NASCAR Cup Series history includes 40 wins, 453 top 10 finishes and 56 poles. Among his many awards are the 1989 Richard Petty Driver of the Year, and an inductee in the 2015 Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame. Martin is the winningest IROC series driver of all time.
The 2000 Winston Cup champion and 2001 IROC Series champion Bobby Labonte will get behind the wheel to defend his title run. Inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2020, Labonte captured 21 wins during his NASCAR career.
The 1988 Winston Cup Series champion Bill Elliott is a multi-race winner and was one of NASCAR's most popular drivers. Over his 37-year career, he had 44 wins, 320 top 10 finishes and 55 poles. Elliott was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1988 and was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2007.
IndyCar legend Danny Sullivan returns to his 'home track' in Monterey. Sullivan won multiple races including the 1985 Indianapolis 500 and captured the 1988 CART championship. He also raced in Formula 1 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He competed and won in IROC during the 1989 season.
The versatile Scott Pruett won nine American road racing championships with 60 wins over four decades. He won the 24 Hours at Daytona a record five times while also achieving success in IndyCar, NASCAR, Trans Am, 24 Hours of Le Mans and IROC.
Ken Schrader is best known for his driving diversity, having competed in as many as 100 races annually that included championships in the USAC and Copper series. Over his 29-year NASCAR career, Schrader finished as high as fourth place in the 1994 championship.
In addition to this highly esteemed group of drivers, Al Unser Jr. will join the event to represent the Unser family as the honorary pace car driver and will be onsite for autograph sessions and other events.
The IROC race compound will be inside the paddock so fans can enjoy a walk-through history under one tent and talk to owners and drivers in an open and friendly environment. 'We want to engage with fans and make their visit one to remember,' Evernham added. 'There will be autograph sessions, panel discussions and special merchandise available.'
The IROC race group is one of 14 race groups to be featured at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which is dedicated to celebrating authentic and historic race cars from the past. Entry applications are being accepted and will be thoroughly vetted for their race provenance and period-correctness to the day the car originally raced. Only the best of the best are annually accepted.
Advance tickets to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion are on sale for guests to bear witness to more than 400 historic race cars competing, the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Formula 1 and the return of the IROC race series with many of its legendary drivers behind the wheel. Individual and multi-day tickets, VIP hospitality packages and camping may be found online at WeatherTechRaceway.com or by calling the tickets and accommodations specialists at 831-242-8200.

WATCH: Kyle Larson Flips Car in Huge Crash at Plymouth

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. NASCAR hero Kyle Larson participated in the World of Outlaws series at the 1/3-mile Plymouth Dirt Track event when a supposed technical problem on the rear axle "launched" his car into the catch fence as he was drifting sideways. A video on X shows him chasing race leader Rico Abreu at high speed on Lap 7. But as soon as his car approached Turn 1, the rear wheel came loose, causing his car to flip and catapult straight into the catch fence. The car then struck the ground sideways, prompting a swift response from the emergency team. Fortunately, Larson was declared safe after the incident. Speaking after the huge crash on X, he said: Kyle Larson, driver of the #5 Chevrolet, prepares to practice for the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on May 31, 2025 in Lebanon, Tennessee. "Just kinda launched me and along for the ride. Bummer, I felt really good, pacing Rico there, finally catching traffic, getting racing there. "Glad I'm okay. Big hits but all-in-all, feel fine." Hard Crash for Kyle Larson tonight at Plymouth. Fortunately, Larson was able to walk away from this one. — Toby Christie (@Toby_Christie) June 7, 2025 Larson has been racing in the World of Outlaws series since September 10, 2011. The 2021 NASCAR champion hit the 30-race wins milestone last year at Federated Auto Parts Raceway in Pevely. This shows his love for racing is not just limited to stock car racing. Last month, Larson attempted The Double by racing in the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 and the Indy 500 on the same day. This was his second attempt at securing the legendary feat, but unfortunately, he failed after crashing in the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Newsweek Sports reported his statement after the race. He said: "It was a bit crazy there on the start. "I got tight behind Takuma [Sato]. I was really close to him and I think I got loose and kind of got all over the place. Yeah, so I spun. Just hate that I got a little too eager there on the restart and caused that crash. So, hate it for everybody that also got caught up in it. "Just bummed out, so I'll try to get over this quickly and get on to Charlotte, and just forgot about it." The race start was also delayed by 45 minutes due to wet weather. When Larson was asked if that was on his mind, considering that he had another race to participate in, he said: "I don't know. I wasn't too focused on that." He added: "When I'm sitting there for 45 minutes, it was on my mind, but once we got racing, I wasn't really worried about that."

Ryan Blaney Breaks Silence on Cadillac F1 Rumor With Just One Word

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A post on X from a parody account wrongly claimed that the Cadillac F1 team has reached out to NASCAR's Team Penske to have driver Ryan Blaney test their Formula One car. It also stated that Blaney would be eligible to receive a Super Licence to race in F1 if he finished 2nd this year. Blaney has responded with just a single three-letter word. Cadillac's F1 team has been gearing up for its premier class debut next year as the sport's eleventh team. The car is being developed in full swing to ensure it is competitive from the first year. Set to be the second American team on the grid, Cadillac joins at a crucial time as F1 enters a new era of regulations in 2026, where cars will be powered by an equal ratio of electric power to internal combustion through sustainable fuels. This is being done to comply with the sport's goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. Ryan Blaney, driver of the #12 Menards/Cardell Cabinetry Ford, poses with the winner sticker on his car in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01,... Ryan Blaney, driver of the #12 Menards/Cardell Cabinetry Ford, poses with the winner sticker on his car in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01, 2025 in Lebanon, Tennessee. MoreHowever, the big question Cadillac gets asked every time is about its driver lineup. While no name has been announced yet, Blaney being linked to the new F1 team for testing would certainly attract attention. Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon confirmed in March that car components were being tested extensively and stressed that there was more work to be done. Newsweek Sports reported: "In terms of timeline for production, we're happy with where that stands. "We've been using a lot of time up to now doing a lot of testing and validation of individual components, things like testing of noses, squeeze testing of chassis elements and the like. "There's an awful lot of work that has gone on in the background. There's still a lot of work to do. "We're in a significantly better position now that we're now a fully-fledged F1 team. We will have access to all the data and information that all the other teams have." He added: "Now we can really push to come up with the most competitive car that we can. The team is already very sizeable, we're very comfortable about the position we're in, in terms of being ready to go racing in 2026." Blaney, however, has rejected the report of him testing for Cadillac. Commenting on the post on X, he said simply, "Nah." While many would have loved to witness a NASCAR-F1 crossover, it won't be happening this time.
