Arne Slot cancels awards appearance as letter read out after Liverpool parade crash

Yahoo28-05-2025

Arne Slot cancelled an appearance at the LMA Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday following the horrific incident which followed Liverpool's Premier League title parade 24 hours earlier.
Slot and his players had just concluded their journey through the streets of the city on Monday when reports of a car hitting pedestrians began to emerge.
A 53-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences, and driving whilst unfit through drugs. At a police press conference on Tuesday, it was confirmed that 50 people had received hospital treatment, and that 11 people remained in hospital. There were no fatalities.

A letter from Slot was read out at the LMA awards night, at which he was due to receive the main award. It said: 'As you will know, a shocking incident took place in Liverpool yesterday, one that left dozens of men, women and children who had attended our parade injured, and as a result I have had to withdraw from the event out of solidarity with all affected.
'This is not a decision I have taken lightly but it is one that I feel is absolutely right given the seriousness of the situation. I hope that I have your understanding in this regard.
'I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wider football community, including the LMA itself, the Premier League and many clubs who will be represented tonight, for the support we have received over the last 24 hours. Football is and always should be a game built on rivalry, but it is also a great source of comradeship, especially at times like this.'
His words continued: 'I would also like to pay tribute to the emergency services and other authorities in Liverpool who swung into action as soon as the incident happened.
'Along with the supporters and bystanders who helped one another in an hour of need, I think everyone involved in the aftermath deserves the gratitude of all of us.'
On winning the award, Slot added: 'I am humbled to be named Barclays Premier League Manager of the Season so thank you to the Barclays & The Premier League awards panel for selecting me. The main reason I say I am humbled is that I know the incredibly high standard of the managers in the Premier League.
'It goes without saying that I am also really proud to be a member of the League Managers Association and therefore I am truly honoured to be awarded the Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy for the LMA Manager of the Year. To be voted for by your managerial peers is so special, especially as I know the unbelievable quality of those who have won this award previously.
'Sir Alex, I look forward to meeting with you at a later date to receive my trophy from you. I also look forward to attending my first LMA Annual Awards dinner on a future occasion. Thank you once again for your understanding and your support.
'If you could join me in keeping those affected by yesterday's events in your thoughts and prayers, it would be very much appreciated.'

Wonderkid fulfils DESTINY by signing for Liverpool

Liverpool's latest signing Armin Pecsi is another example of this. It was the Hungarian wonderkid's destiny to play for the club. Pecsi's father, Imre, is a Liverpool fan. His son, Armin, was born in 2005 - the same year the Reds pulled off the miracle of Istanbul. Advertisement Growing up in Gyor, Armin, just like his father, became a fan of the Reds. Thousands of miles away from Liverpool, the youngster was wearing the club's colours with pride as he shared on his Instagram page announcing his arrival at the club. Three years ago, Pecsi was already walking around the Anfield dressing room. Back then, he made the visit while he was playing in U19 European qualifying matches in the north of England. Incidentally, it's here where he first caught the eye of scouts, playing a blinder against England's U19 team, making six saves and keeping a 10-men Hungary in the game, with his side narrowly losing 1-0. In between those qualifying matches, Hungary's team made a visit to Anfield, and had a tour around the stadium. Pecsi standing at the back with his long hair, will have already fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting the famous stadium. Little did he know that three years later, he'd be there again, signing for the club. But before that, a few more significant things had to happen to forge Pecsi's arrival into destiny. Advertisement In 2023, Dominik Szoboszlai signed for Liverpool. Hungary's best player, Pecsi's countryman, signing for his beloved club. To make matters even better, by that point Pecsi was Szoboszlai's fellow colleague, with Matyas Esterhazy's EM Sports Consulting representing both of Hungary's promising stars. As a result, Pecsi had the opportunity to watch Szoboszlai in action during Hungary's winter break in the 2023/24 season. As shared on his Instagram, he attended a game back in December 2023. Even then, he couldn't have fathomed that he'd be signing for Liverpool and he'd soon get the opportunity to play at Anfield as player of the Reds. But that's now the prospect that awaits him.

Liverpool confirm agreement to REPLACE fan favourite

One of the big factors why Kelleher was regarded as such a brilliant no.2 was because he was able to come in and replace Alisson in the Brazilian's absence. Kelleher was able to do this due to his composure on the ball and brilliant reflexes. Advertisement His composure on the ball came from playing as a striker in Ireland until the age of 13-years-old, when he switched into playing as a goalkeeper instead. 'He was a very good centre-forward and represented his county in that position," Eddie Harrington told the Liverpool ECHO back in 2022. 'He only went in goal at Under-14s level and that was only about seven years ago. That's a massive transition. We taught him to pass it out from the back but he probably had the footwork from being an outfielder," Harrington continued. Now Liverpool are about to sign a player very similar to Kelleher, who went through the same journey at around the same age. Advertisement The Reds have confirmed the arrival of Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia. Like Kelleher, he is a brilliant shot-stopper with great reflexes, who prevented 14.33 goals in the Hungarian top flight last season. But even more interestingly, like Kelleher, Pecsi also played as a forward at a younger age and learned the foundations of the game as an outfielder before switching to become a goalkeeper. "For a long time I played up front, I also played in goal, but I preferred to play as a striker," Pecsi told FEOL. "Even at the age of maybe 11 or 12, I was still playing in both striker and goalkeeper," he continued. Advertisement "Then there came a point when I was told it would be good to decide which I wanted to do, and I decided to stay in goal and continue there. I decided on my own." In this sense, Liverpool might have just signed their Kelleher 2.0 and have already replaced the beloved fan favourite at Anfield in the matter of days. All for the paltry sum of £1.5m, Anfield Watch understands. There's no denying this is the perfect deal.

Dortmund agree £31m deal to sign Sunderland's Bellingham

Jobe Bellingham is yet to win his first cap for England's senior team [Getty Images] Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal with Sunderland to sign Jobe Bellingham for an initial 32m euros (£26.96m) plus 5m euros (£4.2m) in add-ons. The 19-year-old midfielder had garnered interest from across Europe but it is Dortmund, former home of elder brother Jude, who are set to secure his signature. Advertisement Bellingham has played for Sunderland since 2023 and helped them secure Premier League promotion this past season, making 43 appearances for the Black Cats and scoring four goals across all competitions. The England youth international started his career at Birmingham City, coming through the academy before playing two years of senior football for the club. Borussia Dortmund experienced an inconsistent season in 2024-25 but had a strong finish to the campaign winning their final five matches to finish fourth and secure Champions League football for next season. If the deal is completed by 10 June, Bellingham would be able to play in the upcoming Club World Cup. Advertisement That tournament takes place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July. Bellingham has been named in the European Under-21 Championship, to be held in Slovakia from 11-28 June, but England boss Lee Carsley has said he will release players so they can compete in the Club World Cup. Mirroring his brother It is thought Bellingham is keen to follow in his brother's footsteps. Jude, two years Jobe's senior, also came through Birmingham City's academy before moving to Dortmund in 2020 and then Real Madrid in 2023. Bellingham is already mirroring his brother's career with the move to Dortmund and he was also named the Championship's Young Player of the Year in May, five years after Jude won the same award.
