NBA All-star Zion Williamson faces civil lawsuit alleging rape and years of abuse
NBA
star
Zion Williamson
is at the center of a civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, where a woman identified as his ex-girlfriend(Jane Doe) accuses him of
rape
, physical assault, and a prolonged pattern of abuse spanning from 2018 to 2023.
The plaintiff claims their relationship began during Williamson's freshman year at Duke University and continued into his professional career with the
New Orleans Pelicans
.
Allegations in the lawsuit
The lawsuit outlines two specific instances of alleged rape occurring in September and October 2020 at a Beverly Hills residence rented by Williamson during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the first incident, the plaintiff alleges that after expressing a desire to sleep, Williamson insisted on
sex
, subsequently pinning her down and assaulting her. She further claims he threw her phone across the room and choked her.
Live Events
The second incident reportedly involved Williamson becoming angry when she mentioned visiting a friend, leading to another alleged assault and the confiscation of her phone and laptop.
Beyond these events, the plaintiff accuses Williamson of ongoing abuse, including strangulation to the point of unconsciousness, physical beatings, threats involving a firearm, and coercive control tactics such as taking her personal belongings without consent.
She asserts that these actions occurred across multiple states, including California, Louisiana, and Texas, until their relationship ended in 2023.
Williamson's response
Williamson's legal team has categorically denied all allegations, describing them as "false and reckless."
His attorneys assert that the relationship was consensual and casual, ending years ago, and claim that the plaintiff only raised concerns after the relationship concluded. They allege that she began demanding millions of dollars and that Williamson reported these alleged extortion attempts to law enforcement, resulting in an arrest warrant. Williamson intends to file counterclaims seeking significant damages for defamation.
Legal proceedings and public reaction
The plaintiff is seeking a jury trial, along with exemplary and punitive damages for the alleged abuse and emotional distress. Her attorney emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, "We and our client do not want to litigate this case in the press. These are very serious allegations."
The New Orleans Pelicans organization has acknowledged the lawsuit but declined to comment, deferring to Williamson's legal team.
Williamson, the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and a two-time All-Star, has faced previous controversies in his personal life. Despite injury struggles, he has maintained a notable NBA career with the Pelicans.

ATM card cloning: SBI told to pay ₹80k fraud loss to customer
Meerut: A consumer court in Bulandshahr directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to refund ₹80,000 fraudulently withdrawn from a customer's account using a cloned ATM card, along with ₹30,000 as compensation for "mental harassment and litigation costs". The case pertains to Asif Khan, an Indian Army personnel from Sikandrabad, who holds a joint defence account with SBI along with his wife. During his posting in Meerut amid the Covid pandemic, eight unauthorised transactions of ₹10,000 each were made from his account on May 15 and 16, 2020, totalling ₹80,000. Khan said he missed transaction alerts due to work commitments and later discovered the fraud. He found his ATM card safe in his possession and immediately contacted SBI customer care to block the card. He was advised to submit a written complaint. Khan submitted the complaint to the SBI branch manager in Sikandrabad the same day, receiving an assurance that the matter would be probed. He, simultaneously, filed a complaint with police, and an FIR was registered. However, despite this, no action was allegedly taken by the bank. On Saturday, consumer court judge Hasnain Qureshi ruled in Khan's favour, ordering SBI to refund the full amount with 6% annual interest from the date of filing of complaint. "The court also directed the bank to pay ₹20,000 as compensation for mental harassment and ₹10,000 for litigation costs. In case of non-payment within 30 days, the branch manager will have to pay 7% annual interest on the above amount," said the court's public information officer, Shekhar Verma. Verma said, "SBI failed to produce CCTV footage of the ATM from where the cash was withdrawn, and also could not share delivery reports of transaction SMSes."

Promise to make Punjab drug-free 'farce', says BJP leader; AAP contradicts
The promise to make Punjab drug-free has once again proven to be a farce as the fifth deadline set by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on May 31 has passed, but the drug situation in the state has not improved, the BJP's state media head Vineet Joshi said on Sunday. He said the ground reality is that 'chitta' (synthetic drug) is now being sold openly, and home delivery of drugs has become common. Responding to the BJP's assertions, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Neel Garg said it has become a party of press conferences, completely detached from the ground realities. He asked the BJP whether they are unaware that in just 90 days, the AAP government has arrested over 14,000 drug smugglers and sent them to jail. 'Are they oblivious to the fact that 8,472 first information reports (FIRs) have been registered under the NDPS Act and that hundreds of encounters have taken place? Furthermore, hundreds of illegal structures built by drug smugglers have been demolished using bulldozers,' he said. Garg highlighted that the BJP might not know how people across villages, towns, and cities -- be it the elderly, women, or youth -- are coming forward to pledge that they will neither consume drugs nor allow their sale. Not convinced with AAP's justification, the BJP leader said the war against drugs is failing because the drug supply chain has not been broken. He stated, 'Drugs will be eradicated only when the supply chain is crushed. During Covid-19, when the drug supply chain was disrupted, long queues were witnessed outside de-addiction centres. But no such scenes were seen during this campaign against drugs, proving the supply chain remains intact'. Joshi said the AAP government is presenting hollow statistics to gain applause. For instance, Member of Parliament Malwinder Kang cited a case in Patiala, 'labelling a youth as a drug smuggler, while in reality he was an addict undergoing treatment at a de-addiction centre for a year. The FIR mentioned only a non-commercial quantity was found with him'. The BJP leader said the seriousness of the government and CM Mann in fighting drugs could be gauged from the fact that no state-level programmes were held on the last three International Anti-Drug Days.
