Liam Delap reveals Cole Palmer role in choosing Chelsea over Man Utd

Chelsea snapped up Liam Delap for £30m despite interest from Manchester United and the former Manchester City striker has revealed that a chat with Blues star Cole Palmer helped him make his decision
Liam Delap has revealed he spoke with former team-mate Cole Palmer before deciding to join Chelsea for £30million.
Delap joined Enzo Maresca 's men despite strong interest from Manchester United and quickly wrapped up a move from Ipswich Town in time for the Club World Cup.

The forward has already made his first two appearances for the club against Los Angeles FC and Flamengo and is hoping to become Chelsea's first choice forward in the 2025-26 season.

Delap has spoken about what influenced his decision to move to Stamford Bridge despite huge interest in his signature and said Palmer - who came through the ranks with him at Manchester City - was a big help in making his decision.
"Yeah I spoke to him a little bit," he said, as reported by ESPN. "Asked him what I needed to ask him. He told me what I needed to know. I don't like too much information.
"Ultimately it was my decision so I kind of just want my head to be clear so not too much. [I've known him] since I was 15, playing at City with him. I've got a good relationship with him so it was nice to see a familiar face.
"There are so many factors that go into it. I've got a good relationship with the manager. I know how he plays. I've played in this system before. I know a lot of the players here and the project of the club, how they see the future. That's what excited me."
Palmer made the move from City to Chelsea and has become one of the first names on the team-sheet. He scored 22 goals and assisted 11 in his first season before netting another 15 and assisting eight in his second campaign.

Delap is hoping to emulate the midfielder by also making a fast start to life in west London, having scored 12 Premier League goals last season.
"Of course, that's the goal," Delap said. "I think we both had similar positions and he's gone and smashed it so hopefully I can also.
"I think he's always been that good and everyone at City will tell you that. The rate he's done it at is incredible. But I think ultimately it was always going to happen."
Delap is still only 22 and will now be looking to stamp his mark on the Premier League after his first season in the top flight with the Tractor Boys ended in relegation. He previously played six senior games for City before loan moves to Stoke, Preston and Hull before joining Ipswich for £20m last summer.

Palace's Euro hopes boosted as John Textor sells stake to New York Jets owner

Textor's shares in Palace threatened to be an obstacle to their participation in the Europa League next season because the American is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, who are set to enter the same competition. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as though Palace would miss out. We can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson 'Woody' has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. Full club statement ⤵️#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) June 23, 2025 However, Palace announced on Monday that Textor's 45 per cent stake in the London club has been sold to Johnson, subject to Premier League and Women's Super League approval. A club statement read: 'Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson, 'Woody', an American businessman and co-owner of the New York Jets, has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Reports have placed the price between £160m and £190m. The sale may now free Palace up to play in the Europa League, for which the Eagles qualified thanks to their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor, who through his Eagle Football Holdings group also owns a significant stake in Brazilian side Botafogo, initially invested in Palace in 2021. The PA news agency understands a decision regarding Palace's participation is expected from UEFA before the end of June.

Enzo Maresca to rest players for Chelsea vs Esperance de Tunis at Club World Cup

The Blues need only avoid defeat against the Tunisian side in Philadelphia to be assured of a place in the last 16 and the Italian is set to take advantage of his side's position in the group after two matches to give some rest to his squad. Captain James is unwell and did not train on Monday while fellow defender Levi Colwill is likely to be left out having also been suffering from illness. MD3 of the @FIFACWC 🆚 ES Tunis. 👊 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 23, 2025 'Tomorrow we will do some rotation because the ones who played two games are quite tired to play again,' said Maresca. 'So we will make rotation and we will see if there is a chance for those who haven't played as much. 'Reece, the reason why (he didn't train) is because he is ill. Levi Colwill has also been ill in the last two days, but today was better and part of the session.' Maresca will also be without Nicolas Jackson who serves a one-match ban following his dismissal for a studs-up tackle in the 3-1 defeat against Flamengo. The Senegal striker was shown a straight red card minutes after his team had conceded two quick-fire goals to throw away the lead against the Brazilian side. It is the second time in as many months that the 24-year-old will have served a suspension for getting sent off after he was red carded in the Premier League run-in for elbowing Newcastle defender Sven Botman. Chelsea went on to lose 2-0 at St James' Park. FT. ⏹️ — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 20, 2025 Maresca's side also have a punishing climate to cope with in the United States as they seek to avoid the embarrassment of a group-stage exit, with temperatures hitting 38 degrees in Philadelphia on Monday. Off the back of a season in which the team went all the way to the final of the Conference League, as well as Champions League qualification going down to the final day of a hard-fought Premier League run-in, the Italian has been forced into caution over how much he can squeeze from his squad. 'It's almost impossible to train a full session because of the weather,' he said. 'We are trying to save energy for the game. This morning's session was very short, just plan for tomorrow, that's it. No more than that. 'It's not easy with these temperatures, but we will give our best tomorrow to get to the next stage of the competition.' Prior to the defeat to Flamengo, the Blues had got their time in the US off a smooth start with a 1-0 victory over Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.
