Omani fund replaces Russia's Alrosa in Angolan diamond miner Catoca
A subsidiary of Oman's sovereign wealth fund has replaced sanctions-hit Russian firm Alrosa as a shareholder in Angola's state-controlled diamond miner Catoca, according to the shareholder structure on Catoca's website. Angola had been under pressure to cease its long-standing partnership with the Russian state-controlled Alrosa, the world's largest producer of rough diamonds by volume, since 2022 when the West imposed sanctions on Alrosa for Moscow's role in the conflict in Ukraine. Catoca's shareholder structure showed that Endiama EP, Angola's national diamond company, owns 59% of Catoca, with Taadeen holding the remaining 41%, which used to be held by Alrosa. The Oman Investment Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Alrosa confirmed that it had exited the shareholding, but provided no further details. Angola's Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, said the deal had been formalised on May 26. In November, Angola said having sanctions-hit Alrosa as a shareholder in the Angolan diamond miner was affecting "Angola's credibility in the international diamond market". Iran to present counter-proposal in nuclear talks with US
Iran is to present a counter-proposal in nuclear talks with the US, with the Omani-mediated negotiations at an impasse. Washington last month submitted a proposal for a new nuclear deal, but Tehran deemed it "unacceptable". Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed the proposal, saying it was against Iranian interests. "We will present our own proposal to the other side via Oman after it is finalised. This proposal is reasonable, logical and balanced," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a weekly press conference. "We must ensure, before the lifting of sanctions, that Iran will effectively benefit economically and that its banking and trade relations with other countries will return to normal." There was no clarity yet on the timing of a sixth round of nuclear talks, he added. Iran and the US have held five rounds of talk, but have so far failed to come to an agreement. European powers are expected to push for a resolution, condemning Iran's behaviour at a meeting of the UN's nuclear watchdog on Monday. The talks, mediated by Oman, aim to replace the 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers that restricted Iran's nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief. US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the accord in 2018, during his first term. Mr Trump has insisted that Iran fully abandon its uranium enrichment programme. Mr Khamenei has said that is a red line. Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday said "the US plan does not even mention the lifting of sanctions". He called it a sign of dishonesty, accusing the US of seeking to impose a "unilateral" agreement that Tehran would not accept. "The delusional US President should know better and change his approach if he is really looking for a deal," Mr Ghalibaf added.

$1bln Li-ion battery materials project proposed in Oman
Muscat - Chinese global battery materials manufacturer Hunan Zhongke Electric Co Ltd, a publicly traded company listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, has announced that it plans to set up a first-ever lithium-ion battery anode production facility in the Sultanate of Oman with an investment estimated at $1.1 billion (equivalent to around 8 billion yuan). The proposed investment will be made through its Hong Kong-based wholly-owned subsidiary, Zhongke Shinzoom (Hong Kong) Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of its holding subsidiary Hunan Zhongke Shinzoom Graphite Co, Ltd. The project centres on the development of an integrated base for the production of 200,000 metric tonnes of lithium-ion battery anode materials annually. The facility, tipped to be built at Sohar Port and Free Zone, will be constructed in two phases, each with a planned capacity of 100,000 mt per year, and the construction period for each phase is expected to be 36 months. Zhongke specialises in developing, manufacturing, and distributing graphite negative electrode materials for lithium batteries used in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage. The company also produces electromagnetic equipment and other products. Its products are supplied to leading manufacturers of auto batteries in China and globally. Zhongke aims to capitalise on the restructuring of the global lithium battery supply chain by leveraging its Oman project to expand into international markets, tap into emerging opportunities, and position itself as a leading global brand in lithium-ion battery anode materials. Together with investments flowing into polysilicon, solar PV and module, and even wind turbine projects in Suhar and Al Duqm, the latest investment in lithium battery materials will enhance Oman's positioning as a regional hub for goods destined for the burgeoning global clean energy industry. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
