Yahoo13-05-2025

WEMBLEY again olé olé...
The song that's no doubt been running through every Warrington Wolves fan's head since Sunday evening, so a fitting way in which to start this week's episode of "The Wrap-Up."
Our weekly match review podcast is back this week to dissect and have the final say on what was a memorable Challenge Cup semi-final against Leigh Leopards.
The Wire ran out 21-14 winners at the Totally Wicked Stadium to book their eighth visit to Wembley Stadium since it reopened in 2007 - so can it now officially be known as "HJ South?"
This week's podcast includes an exclusive chat with prop James Harrison and audio from head coach Sam Burgess' post-match press conference.
We also have our usual fan contributors Gareth Dunning and Rob Croston back to have their say on the action as excitement for the final against Hull KR starts to build.

'He brushed me aside' - Williams on the try that broke Wire hearts

GEORGE Williams says referee Liam Moore 'brushed aside' his initial protests about the try that condemned Warrington Wolves to defeat in the Challenge Cup Final. Now, though, he says his thoughts were about ensuring youngster Arron Lindop – the Wire player directly involved in the incident – responds positively. Advertisement As The Wire closed in on a famous Wembley victory, Hull KR half Tyrone May kicked in behind Lindop who struggled to get the ball dead under pressure from Peta Hiku, allowing Tom Davies to touch the ball down. Replays appeared to show Lindop grounded the ball with his torso, which head coach Sam Burgess insisted post-match should have seen a goal-line drop-out awarded, before Davies touched down, but video referee Jack Smith awarded the try and Mikey Lewis' conversion sealed an 8-6 victory for the Robins. Williams says he protested at the time that Lindop had made the ball dead but that Moore paid no attention. 'I said to the ref and a couple of staff have Googled the rules and it says you can ground with your torso,' he said after the game. Advertisement 'That was what I said on the field but the ref brushed me aside. 'If that is the rule, it's a shocking way to lose. 'Young Arron Lindop's devastated in there but he'll be fine – he's got 10-15 years of this and I'm sure he'll be back. 'I gave him a hug, told him we all loved him and that we have his back. 'He's going to be a superstar of our game – I really believe that. He'll be back but sometimes you've got to lose one to win one.' Williams' early return from ankle surgery to lead Warrington out dominated the build-up to the final after he had missed his side's previous seven games. He believes he has come through unscathed but having lost a Wembley final for the third time, his pain is more mental than physical. Advertisement Williams was returning from seven weeks out following ankle surgery (Image: Ed Sykes/ 'I was cramping at the end – I've not played for a while so I was battling for the last 20 minutes,' he said. 'I was just happy to be out there. We did well for 77 minutes but it wasn't enough. 'There's a lot of heartbreak. To concede like that is heartbreaking to say the least. 'You've got to give some credit to Hull KR but for us, to be leading for so much of the game but concede at the back end is disappointing. 'We got in the grind, we got behind Sneydy's kicking game and he kicked them to death, but there was the moment at the end there – probably a couple when we got repeat sets. Advertisement 'The last one where if we catch that ball, we probably go on to win the game. 'I'm sick of losing here to be honest so hopefully next time, I'll win one.' Williams' half-back partner Marc Sneyd delivered a masterful kicking display in soggy conditions and with Warrington set for victory, he was overwhelmingly voted as the winner of the Lance Todd Trophy for the game's player of the match. Despite ending up on the losing side, he picks up the trophy for the third time in his career and Williams was full of praise for the scrum-half. 'He was brilliant today,' he said. 'It was perfect weather for Marc Sneyd to show us exactly how good he is and he did exactly that. Advertisement 'I thought if he'd have won the Lance Todd, we'd have won but obviously that wasn't the case. 'The one positive is once we reflect a little bit, we'll realise we've got a good team here and we can push for the finals. 'Hull KR know we're a good team now too and we'll get some belief that we're a top team.'

Seth Rollins on why Caleb Williams will have better Year 2 than Jayden Daniels

Seth Rollins on why Caleb Williams will have better Year 2 than Jayden Daniels Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be compared for the duration of their NFL careers. The first and second overall picks, respectively, have all of the talent and potential to thrive and be the face of the league for the long term. But while Daniels had an easy-going rookie season -- en route to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors -- Williams dealt with adversity and still faces plenty of criticism after just one year. During a recent appearance on the "Up & Adams" show, WWE superstar (and noted Bears fan) Seth Rollins explained why he believes Williams will have a better 2025 season than Daniels. "I think Caleb Williams is going to have a better year," Rollins said. "I think last year was an aberration. I think you're going to see a little bit of a sophomore slump. I think people are going to be able to gameplan for (Jayden) better. ... I just think the second year is going to be more difficult. You look at C.J. had a great year, but compared to the rookie year, not quite as good. I think you're going to look at it and see a situation like that whereas expectations are going to be a little bit lower for Caleb, and I think he's going to be able to exceed those. Plus, he's playing in a system with Ben Johnson that's going to be curated better to him than what he was doing with Shane Waldron." While it's easy to deem Rollins a "superfan" defending "his" quarterback, he brings up a good point. A sophomore slump could potentially be in play for Daniels, who had a lights-out rookie season. Also, we haven't even glimpsed Williams' ceiling after his chaotic rookie season that featured incompetent coaching. Now with Ben Johnson in place, we should get a taste of what Williams can really bring to the field. There's no reason Williams and Daniels can't both be great -- and we could very well be witnessing the beginning of that -- but people love to compare and declare who's better. That's a question that wouldn't even be answered for several years. But with both Williams and Daniels in the NFC, they'll be seeing a lot of each other throughout their careers -- especially if their respective teams become perennial playoff teams. Williams and Daniels will square off again for the second time in as many seasons when the Commanders host the Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 6. While Williams nearly won the first match -- before Tyrique Stevenson's blunder on a Hail Mary -- he'll have a chance to redeem himself and even the series with Daniels on Oct. 13.

More injury woe for Wire during Challenge Cup Final loss

WARRINGTON Wolves have lost the services of their star full-back Matt Dufty on a day of Wembley blows. Head coach Sam Burgess said on the BBC that the Australian broke his cheekbone or eye socket with 25 minutes to go. Advertisement "He tried to to get to the end of the game but it popped out, so we'll be without him for a while." Stefan Ratchford came off the bench to replace Dufty late on but Hull KR snatched victory out of Warrington's hands with Tom Davies' late, late try.
