Gulf Insider17-03-2025

A man whose genitalia was 'disfigured' by hot coffee was awarded $50 million by a California jury on Friday after a five year court battle.Michael Garcia was picking up drinks at a Los Angeles Starbucks drive-through when he suffered 'suffered severe burns, disfigurement, and debilitating nerve damage to his genitals when hot drinks ultimately spilled' onto his lap, according to the 2020 lawsuit filed in California Superior Court, which accused Starbucks of breaching its duty of care by failing to secure the lid.
Garcia's lawyer, Michael Parker, said his client was picking up three beverages – one of which wasn't fully pushed into the drink holder. When the barista handed Garcia the order, a hot drink fell out and spilled onto his lap – causing permanent and life-changing disfigurement.
According to a recording of the verdict, Garcia's damages cover physical pain, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, humiliation, inconvenience, grief, disfigurement, physical impairment, anxiety and emotional distress.
Garcia underwent skin grafts and other procedures on his genitals after a venti-sized tea drink spilled on him on Feb. 8, 2020, causing 'permanent and life-changing disfigurement,' according to his attorneys.

Around 47 injured in chaos, shooting at Gaza aid centre

Around 47 people were injured, largely due to gunshots fired by the Israeli military, during chaotic scenes at a new aid distribution centre in Gaza, a senior UN official said yesterday. Thousands of Palestinians rushed into the centre run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) on Tuesday, AFP journalists reported, as Israel implemented a new distribution system that bypasses the United Nations. The incident in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip came days after the partial easing of a total aid blockade on the Palestinian territory that Israel imposed on March 2, leading to severe shortages of food and medicine. 'From the information we have, there are about 47 people who have been injured' in Tuesday's incident, Ajith Sunghay, the head of the UN Human Rights Office in the Palestinian territories, told the UN correspondents' association in Geneva. He added that 'most of those injured are due to gunshots' and based on the information he has, 'it was shooting from the IDF' -- the Israel Defence Forces. Sunghay stressed that his office was still assessing and gathering information on the full picture of events. 'The numbers could go up. We are trying to confirm what has happened to them,' in terms of how seriously people were injured, Sunghay added. Sunghay also expressed concern about the possible medical aid injured people would be able to access. 'Getting medical aid has never been easy in Gaza or in the West Bank because hospitals have been attacked, ambulances have been attacked, health workers have been attacked,' he said. The Israeli military said its troops 'fired warning shots in the area outside' the distribution compound on Tuesday, and that it had re-established 'control over the situation'. A senior military official said the distribution was nonetheless 'a success'.

Israel strikes leave 130 dead in Gaza

TDT | Agencies Israel strikes leave 130 dead in Gaza Agencies Overnight Israeli airstrikes killed at least 130 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in the war-ravaged Gaza, local health officials said yesterday. Gaza's Health Ministry said at least 464 Palestinians were killed in the week to yesterday as a result of Israel's escalated bombardment. The deaths of at least 130 Palestinians overnight are in addition to that figure. 'Complete families were wiped off the civil registration record by (overnight) Israeli bombardment,' Khalil Al-Deqran, Gaza health ministry spokesperson, said. The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the casualties. On the other hand, Gaza civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP at least 50 people had been killed yesterday 'as a result of ongoing Israeli air strikes since the early hours'. Pre-dawn attack He said 22 people died and at least 100 others wounded in a pre-dawn attack on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Al-Mawasi in the southern Gaza Strip. AFPTV footage showed people sifting through what was left of ruined shelters and rescuers treating the wounded. 'All my family members are gone. There is no one left,' said a distraught Warda al-Shaer amid the wreckage. 'The children were killed as well as their parents. My mother died too, and my niece lost her eye.' The ministry said 31 children and 27 women were left dead and hundreds more wounded in Friday's airstrikes. In southern Gaza, Israel struck the outskirts of Deir al-Balah and the city of Khan Younis. It said it hit anti-tank missile posts and military structures. Three children and their grandfather were killed as they fled bombardment in Khan Younis, said the head of pediatrics at Nasser Hospital, Dr. Ahmed al-Farra. In northern Gaza, the attacks sent people fleeing from the Jabaliya refugee camp and the town of Beit Lahiya. The attacks came as Israel prepares for a new ground offensive aimed at achieving 'operational control' in parts of Gaza.

Israel's military operations and blockade of humanitarian aid worsen Palestinian situation

Medical aid agency Doctors Without Borders (MSF) yesterday said Israel's military operations and blockage of humanitarian aid had turned Gaza into a graveyard for Palestinians and those helping them. Israel, fighting in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, resumed operations in the Palestinian territory in March after the collapse of a two-month-old ceasefire amid differences over the next phase. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, with Israel blocking humanitarian aid since March 2, before the truce disintegrated. Medical supplies, fuel, water and other essentials are in short supply, the UN says. 'Gaza has been turned into a mass grave of Palestinians and those coming to their assistance,' said MSF coordinator Amande Bazerolle. Last month, Israeli forces opened fire on ambulances in Gaza, killing 15 medics and rescuers in an incident that sparked international condemnation. 'We are witnessing in real time the destruction and forced displacement of the entire population in Gaza,' Bazerolle added. 'With nowhere safe for Palestinians or those trying to help them, the humanitarian response is severely struggling under the weight of insecurity and critical supply shortages, leaving people with few, if any, options for accessing care,' she said. Israel yesterday announced that it had converted 30 percent of Gaza's territory into a buffer zone as it pressed its unrelenting military offensive, vowing to maintain its blockade on humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged territory. Israel resumed air and ground attacks across the Gaza Strip on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas that had largely halted hostilities, with rescuers yesterday saying at least 11 were killed in strikes across the Palestinian territory. The UN said an estimated 500,000 Palestinians have been displaced since the end of the Gaza ceasefire, triggering what it described as one of the most severe humanitarian crises the territory has faced in more than 18 months of war. The Israeli military yesterday said that as part of its resumed operations, it had 'achieved full operational control over several key areas and routes throughout the Gaza Strip'.
