NRL faces pressure to address Latrell Mitchell and Spencer Leniu's $30,000 refusal ahead of Origin

Daily Mail10 hours ago

The NRL is facing mounting pressure to demand that footy stars Latrell Mitchell and Spencer Leniu end their media blackout ahead of Origin 2 in Perth.
Both players have undertaken self-imposed media bans, with Mitchell not speaking to press at all this year and Leniu not fronting reporters since his run-in with Jonathan Thurston earlier this season.
The bans have continued through Origin, with hype for the series at an all-time low.
NRL journalist David Riccio has warned that the sport needs to be careful not to stunt itself.
'The NRL need to be careful with State of Origin because what we saw in Origin 1 was the closest thing we've seen to an NRL game,' Riccio said on SEN.
'The media build-up and promotion is critical to the hype and excitement before the game, but it's become so boring and so vanilla.
'We're not hearing from the actual players. The game has a responsibility to ensure the actual superstars promote the game and sell the game.
' … We can't allow Game 2 to unfold the way the first one did, This game has to be an absolute spectacle to win over the West Australian public.'
Footy legend Matty Johns added that players are getting paid $30,000 for an Origin match, so should be made to do media duties.
'If you're getting paid that money, I think it's your responsibility to talk,' he said.
'And it's your responsibility to build the game up.'
Riccio stressed the importance of Origin 2 in Perth succeeding - especially since the city will have a new NRL team in 2027.
'We can't allow Game 2 to unfold the way the first one did,' he said.

'Like Ireland v Bulls' - depth key to Leinster's URC win

Leinster's strength in depth has long been the envy of many squads in the United Rugby Championship and it once again came to the fore in Saturday's final win against the missing three injured Lions in the form of Tadhg Furlong, Hugo Keenan and Jamison Gibson-Park, the Irish province still fielded an incredible nine players who will travel to Australia with Andy Farrell's squad. Garry Ringrose, Josh van der Flier, James Lowe, Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Joe McCarthy, James Ryan and Jack Conan all started while Ronan Kelleher came off the bench in the comfortable 32-7 victory against the Bulls in Dublin to end the province's four-year trophy also had another eight players that will be part of Paul O'Connell's Ireland squad for this summer's tests against Georgia and in All Black Jordie Barrett, Springbok RG Snyman and French international Rabah Slimani and that means that young scrum half Fintan Gunne was the only uncapped player in the match-day squad. 'They only had 22 internationals!' Bulls head coach Jake White was typically dry in his post-match press conference when addressing the quality that his opposite number Cullen could call upon. "I said during the week that Leinster would have 23 internationals, but it wasn't quite so bad, they only had 22!" he joked."I have said repeatedly that it is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. "We have plenty of experienced players, but we finished the game with eight non-internationals and Leo is able to throw on the likes of RG Snyman for a run-around. It is like Ireland v the Bulls out there."Two of Leinster's four tries were scored by Irish stalwarts turned Lions, with captain Conan getting the first and back row partner van der Flier the third. Barrett's beautifully improvised effort was sandwiched between the two as Leinster blitzed the South Africans in the opening 22 minutes, before shutting them out at half-time and going on to pick up a comfortable win after Gunne's late try. Fitness scares and good performances in mixed bag for Lions contingent Those on 'Lions watch' would have been concerned with the late withdrawal of Gibson-Park but Cullen was upbeat about the scrum half's fitness."Jamison picked up a bit of a knock on his glute in last week's semi-final and he just couldn't shake it off. It's nothing too serious so he'll be ok for the Lions," he row Ryan appeared to be limping slightly clutching the bottom of his back when he was substituted two minutes after the did reappear at full-time to join his teammates in collecting their medals and Cullen was also upbeat about his health."James certainly looked alright celebrating in the dressing room!"There is less than a week until the Lions kick off their summer adventure with a warm-up game at the Aviva Stadium against much game time the Leinster players get against the Pumas remains to be seen but they will certainly bring with them an air of positivity when they join the camp. Cullen is looking forward to a summer spent watching his charges on the world stage."A big part of what we do here is player development, so we are very proud of all the boys heading away this summer. "They have all earned it and I'm looking forward to keeping a keen eye on them when they are away."While Cullen and the Leinster staff can put their feet up for a couple of months, the show goes on for a large chunk of his talented squad and they will be hoping they can bring their success in blue to red and green respectively.

Matildas superstar ties the knot alongside team-mates in stunning Hamilton Island wedding

Footballing superstars Katrina Gorry and Clara Markstedt have got tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony on Hamilton Island. The pair welcomed around 70 people to celebrate their special day, with several other Matildas stars, including Charli Grant and Michelle Heyman in attendance. Gorry is not the first Matildas star to get married in recent weeks with Ellie Carpenter also tying the knot with her long-standing beau Danielle van de Donk during a glamorous celebration in France. Markstedt and Gorry, according to New Idea, wanted a beach-themed wedding, choosing to get married on the Whitsundays in Queensland. They both dazzled as they donned beautiful white gowns. Markstedt, who hails from Sweden, stunned in a white gown that featured a beautiful array of floral patterns. Gorry, meanwhile, wore a two-piece silk dress. They held hands as they walked down the aisle and saluted their wedding guests by each holding up their bouquets. The couple, who have two children between them, Harper and Koby, got engaged back in 2023 ahead of the Women's World Cup, during a romantic getaway to Sweden. The Australia midfielder, who has 114 appearances for Australia and is currently playing for West Ham in the Women's Super League, announced the news on Instagram, posting a picture of herself and Markstedt, holding hands with their engagement rings. 'The best love stories never end. YES,' the Australian superstar wrote on Instagram. Markstedt, 35, hung up her boots in 2023, after a distinguished career playing for several teams in Europe, including Sweedish side Vittsjo GIK. It was here that the pair would meet, with Gorry joining up with Vittsjo for the 2022-23 season. Markstedt had helped her find a place to live in Sweden and it was here that their romance began. The happy couple have since spoken out on their big day, telling New Idea that Hamilton Island holds a special place in their hearts. 'When Clara and I were up here in 2022, we joked we'd get married here,' Gorry told New Idea. 'But now it's all come to life… It's incredibly special. Hamilton is a special place for me and the family. It's a part of Australia that I like to go to when I want to get away. It's just absolutely beautiful, and it's in our backyard.' The pair danced to Swedish singer Victor Leksell's 'Svag' during the evening celebrations, a song that the pair would sing together in the car when they first met. Their daughter Harper also had some important duties on the day as the couple's flower girl. The pair went dress shopping together, but hilariously nearly picked the same dress! 'I hate dress shopping, you don't find me in dresses very often,' Gorry said. 'But our dresses are very much 'us' … as soon as I walked into the store, I picked mine out straight away, which was something I never thought would happen.' However, Markstedt added: 'The first dress I touched and was like "Oh my gosh!" … Katrina was like: "Don't touch that! I've already eyed it out!"'

Tackling build costs is the real game-changer

C ompromise rules was the name originally given to a game concocted in the 1980s by the powers-that-be in Australian rules football and the GAA. Its invention facilitated a long-haul jolly every couple of years for blazers, players and the media. Ireland travelled to Australia, then the Aussies came up here. Now known as international rules, and returning this year after an eight-year hiatus, it is a makey-uppy mash-up of two sports that invariably ends in a punch-up. Great entertainment. The government's updated regime of rent controls, unveiled last week, is a type of compromise rules. It attempts to temper roaring rent inflation and at the same time reinvigorate stagnant residential property investment. It was never going to please all, and led to an inevitable ideological dust-up in the Dail and on the airwaves. With a few wrinkles ironed out, it is at least a stab at a model of rent regulation. In the current febrile political atmosphere, however, all that really matters is whether the initiative results in more housing, or more importantly lower rents. Neither is likely.
