‘Get it off!' Owners desperately try to stop fatal dog attack in Santa Monica

Yahoo13-04-2025

A Santa Monica couple is pleading for help after their 4-pound toy poodle was killed in a violent dog attack on Friday.
The owners said they were taking their 11-year-old poodle, Dublin, on a routine walk at around 5:30 p.m. when a larger dog, which was on a leash, lunged after him.
Although you do not see the attack, video footage captured bystanders jumping into action and the owners' horrified screams as they desperately tried to pry the large dog off of Dublin on Strand Street, in between Main and 2nd Streets.
'He wouldn't let go and it got pretty bad,' said one witness. 'It was just so violent.'
The couple, Alyssa Kluge and Christopher Dietrick, said that the other dog's owner was standing on the sidewalk, leaning against a white car, when his dog mauled Dublin.
'What's even more terrifying is that I can see it replaying over and over and over in my head,' said Kluge. She and Dietrick rushed Dublin to a pet hospital, but he didn't make it.
Shortly after the attack, the other owner was caught on surveillance tape fleeing the scene with his dog. Dublin's owners are now asking community members to help identify the man.
'This man is a coward who fled. Not only killed my baby, but fled,' Kluge told KTLA's Jennifer McGraw. 'We're looking for any information. We need to find this guy.'
Witnesses said that the man ran up to 4th Street and into an apartment building in Ocean Park and was overheard saying in an English accent, 'They're going to kill my dog.'
Since the April 11 attack, the couple posted flyers around the neighborhood and are looking for more videos in hopes of finding the owner.
'I think right now we just want to know who this guy is,' said Dietrick. 'I know it's not going to bring back our little guy, but any little sense of justice is something that we're looking for right now.'
They said the man needs to be held accountable, and they want to make sure that no other family has to go through a tragedy like this.
'I love animals, and I am an animal lover, and part of the responsibility of owning an animal is to take care of it and to make sure it doesn't hurt others, and this man failed,' said Kluge. 'He should pay for this.'
Anyone with information who would like to help out can contact the couple by calling 317-966-5130.

Udall neighbors rattled after park restrooms set on fire — twice

UDALL, Kan. (KSNW) — You could smell it before you saw it — the charred remains of the city park restrooms, torched and melted from the inside out. Udall Police Chief Erik King is calling it arson and says it's unlike anything he's dealt with in town before. The damage is estimated at around $10,000. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood 'This is where the trash can was right here in this corner,' King told KSN. 'Melted the alarms, melted the drains, melted the light switches.' Police say it happened Thursday around 4:30 in the afternoon. Then, just hours later, it happened again. 'The same person returned and, at about 8:40 at night, lit the boy's bathroom on fire, and that caused significant damage,' King said. 'It was on fire for 20 minutes before the alarm company notified us.' He says the timing couldn't be worse, with the Fourth of July just around the corner. Neighbors say the smoke drew their attention before they knew what was happening. 'I was doing yardwork and I had the boys, and a lady from out of town came up to the fence and asked if I had seen a person walking around,' said Skylar Kistler, who lives next to the park. That's when she noticed the smoke coming from the bathroom. 'It kind of made us, I guess, feel protective, like a little more protective, like kind of upset that anybody would do that,' she said. Her husband Tylor says the damage is personal. 'I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of nice to have a park like this with a splashpad, and you know everything here for the boys right in our backyard, and it's just kind of bad. This is a good building, and it's terrible,' he said. Chief King says the person believed to be responsible has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention. In the meantime, the city is bringing in port-a-potties, and repairs could take up to two months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rapid City man gets 25-years for dealing meth

RAPID CITY, SD (KELO) — A federal judge on Friday sentenced a Rapid City man, tied to a Mexican drug cartel, to 25-years in prison. 38-year-old Guillermo Calderon pleaded guilty in March to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. Prosecutors say Calderon was the leader of the conspiracy that trafficked significant amounts of methamphetamine to Rapid City and Pine Ridge from Mexican cartel operatives. Authorities in Iowa arrested Calderon in January 2024, while he was allegedly driving 20-pounds of meth into South Dakota. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Father disarmed son after deadly shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the case of a Wichita man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby. Matthew Criscenzo, 19, was arrested at the scene on May 25 after officers found Oglesby shot in the head inside a home on South Laura Street. According to an affidavit made public this week, Criscenzo made multiple unsolicited statements to officers while in custody, saying he 'shot her,' 'didn't want her to go,' and 'didn't think [his] finger was on the trigger.' Flooded in Butler County? Here's how to report damage Oglesby, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead minutes after her baby girl was delivered via emergency C-section. The infant survived but suffered severe brain trauma from a lack of oxygen and remains in critical condition. Criscenzo's father was home at the time and called 911 after hearing a gunshot. He told police he found Naomi on the ground and Matthew holding a gun. He took the weapon away and placed it on the front porch before emergency responders arrived. Criscenzo appeared in court on May 29, where he was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. He remains held in the Sedgwick County Jail on $500,000 bond.
