University of Colorado expects Coach Prime to sign new contract Monday: Breaking down the $54M deal

CBS News31-03-2025

The University of Colorado expects its head football coach, Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, to sign his new five-year contract on Monday, making him
one of the highest-paid football coaches
in the country.
The 29-page contract calls for Sanders to make an average of $10.8 million per year and includes a slew of incentives and allowances ranging from $300,000 per year for private jets to help with recruiting trips to a country club membership and two SUVs for his driving needs.
Steve Hurlbert, director of athletics strategic communications for CU, told CBS News Colorado that while the new contract was announced Friday, it won't be signed until Monday.
"Since the contract was approved by the Board of Regents on a day the university was closed, it's being routed for university signatures today," said Hurlbert. "The contract will be fully executed today."
Last Friday was a Spring Break holiday on campus.
The new deal calls for Sanders to receive $500,000 per year in base salary, but another $3,250,000. Per year to take part in television and radio shows. That broadcast fee increases by another $500,000 in years three and five of the contract.
He'll get another $3 million for developing student-athletes and football program outreach.
Sanders will mostly appear in public in Nike apparel per a clause in the contract.
He will also get another $50,000 if the team achieves a specific academic performance rating after each academic year.
There are several other on-field performance incentives that could further boost the contract's bottom line:
There are additional monetary incentives for Sanders if he is named Big 12 Coach of the Year or National Coach of the Year.
CU is also providing Sanders with two full-sized SUVs, a country club membership, 10 season tickets for CU home games and four season tickets for CU men's and women's basketball games.
He will get a budget of $300,000 annually to use for private jets for recruiting.
If Sanders leaves CU in 2025 for another football coaching job, he or his new employer will have to pay CU $12 million. That amount drops to $10 million in the second year of the contract and down to $3 million in 2029, the final year of the pact.
In a statement, CU Athletic Director Rick George said that Sanders "has restored CU football to our rightful place as a national power."
The university said more than 54 million viewers watched CU football during the 2024 season and that applications to attend CU have increased during Sanders' tenure, especially among minority applicants. CU estimates that home football games this past year brought in $93.9 million in direct economic impact to the city of Boulder.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to continue building something special at Colorado," Sanders said in a news release. When CU hired Sanders, the Buffs had just completed a 1-11 season. In 2024, the team went 9-4 and appeared in the Alamo Bowl.

Browns Coach Reveals Shedeur Sanders' Chance To Win Starting Job

Browns Coach Reveals Shedeur Sanders' Chance To Win Starting Job originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns authored one of biggest storylines of this year's NFL Draft with their eventual move on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round after he was expected by some to be a top-10 pick. Advertisement Some so-called experts thought his college success wouldn't translate to the NFL after he played in an up-tempo offense with the Buffaloes. That's why it's surprising to some that Sanders is apparently adapting well to the huddle-first pro offense of the Browns - at least early in the summer. And maybe the "adapting'' could earn him a climb up the depth chart that includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Sanders. 'You can see them all winning the job, I think, right?' coordinator Tommy Rees said. 'And so in terms of the competition, we're so early in the process. We're so early in evaluating that. Yeah, I think, you know, we have a good group of guys that continue to push one another, and by the time September rolls around, we'll be ready to go.' Advertisement There are those in the media who are pushing the Shedeur idea. "Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said on ESPN's "Get Up" on Wednesday. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge." OK. Meanwhile ... Rees offered intel on how the young quarterback is adapting during OTAs. "He's worked his tail off. He's putting in a lot of work as all those guys are. You can tell on the mental side of the game, learning the system and calling it and having that rhythm to it, he's put a lot of time and work and effort into that," Rees said. "When you do that the game starts to slow down and you can focus on finding completions. He's done a good job of that as camp has progressed." Advertisement But here's the truth ... Reports are that Sanders has been taking the fourth-string reps and has mostly been participating in 7-on-7 drills and not the 11-on-11 drills that the other quarterbacks have been engaged in. So, hype aside, we're still a long way from getting an idea of how Sanders can adjust to the NFL. ... let alone be a starter. Cleveland Browns' Dillon Gabriel Has 'Longer Leash' Than Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns' Dillon Gabriel Has 'Longer Leash' Than Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The most polarizing prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft was former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Mocked by some to be top-five pick, Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round, eventually being scooped up by the Cleveland Browns, who had already taken Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round. Advertisement It's still a big question mark on who starts, between the two rookies Sanders and Gabriel, or the two veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. On Wednesday, a report from ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin suggested that Sanders could be the Week 1 starting quarterback. "Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said about the Browns during a Wednesday appearance on ESPN's "Get Up". "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation. It's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge." According to a graphic posted by ESPN Cleveland on X, on Day 2 of open Browns OTAs, Gabriel led the four potential starting quarterbacks in passing attempts. Gabriel completed 11-of-20 passes, throwing three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Pickett had the second-most throws, going 9-of-15 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Sanders wasn't far behind, completing 9-of-14 passes, finding the end zone thrice but throwing an interception. Advertisement These stats could be meaningless, and Cleveland is obviously testing out all four quarterbacks to determine who deserves the job. During the latest edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast", Browns reporters Dan Labbe and Ashley Bastock noted that Gabriel likely remains ahead of Sanders in the depth chart due to his draft position. "Where they draft these guys matters, and there's a reason they drafted them and they do care about that to an extent," Labbe explained. "Dillon Gabriel was a third-round pick. And so while we're sitting here saying he hasn't looked the best of these two quarterbacks and especially [Wednesday], he's also just got a longer leash and he's just got more room to not be, to maybe not be the guy they've envisioned yet. Because he was a third-round pick and that matters." Cowboys RB room may have surprise candidate to start in $18.7 million reclamation

Cowboys RB room may have surprise candidate to start in $18.7 million reclamation The Dallas Cowboys have added four new running backs into the mix, almost completely turning over their backfield this offseason. With two free agents and two draft picks joining the fray, many are left wondering who the lead runner will be for 2025. While veteran RB Javonte Williams and fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue have gotten most of the attention, it wouldn't be wise to underestimate Miles Sanders' potential role in the Cowboys' backfield. The veteran RB has impressed the coaching staff and practice observers during the recent rounds of OTAs. Brian Schottenheimer spoke highly of the free agent pickup and says no one should be surprised by Sanders' play. That's high praise. With Schottenheimer looking for playmakers and a RB who excels out of the backfield as a receiver, Sanders looks like he's got a legitimate shot at becoming the starter. There wasn't much fanfare when Sanders signed with the Cowboys, but he could wind up playing a big role in the offense. Schottenheimer's right; no one should be shocked about Sanders' ability. The former Philadelphia Eagle has had the most success of anyone currently on the Cowboys' roster as the only RB in Dallas with a 1,000-yard season under his belt. The recently turned 28-year-old runner is also the only double-digit touchdown scorer in the team's backfield. In 2022, Sanders ran for a career high 1,269 yards and 11 scores on his way to a Pro Bowl selection. However, since Sanders has left the Eagles, his production has dipped significantly. The Carolina Panthers signed him to a four-year, $25 million deal after his monster season but in the two years with the team, Sanders has run for a combined 637 yards and three touchdowns. For first time in his career, Sanders has also been under four yards a carry in his two years with the Panthers. While his time in Carolina wasn't good, it's important to have some context. The team was working in a rookie quarterback when Sanders arrived, and he was running behind a subpar offensive line for the last few seasons. The Panthers also went through two different offensive schemes and two head coaches during his time there, none of which is conducive for success. He might have flopped at his last stop, but Sanders was a second-round pick who can play and had success with the Eagles. He might be the oldest RB in the room for the Cowboys, but he also doesn't have much wear and tear. Sanders has only eclipsed 200 carries once in his career (259 in 2022) and has just 184 totes in the last two years combined, including a measly 55 in 11 games last season. There should be plenty of juice left in Sanders' legs. It's only June and these are glorified practices, but when training camp does arrive, no one should be surprised if Miles Sanders makes an impact. The veteran RB no longer looks like an afterthought for the Cowboys. Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans!
