Four years ago, Harvard University moved a long-planned solar geoengineering project from Arizona to Sápmi, the homelands of Sámi peoples across what is now Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. The Sámi had no idea it was coming.
'We did not know about the plans until we got alerted by the [Indigenous Environmental Network] and they were saying, 'You should be aware of this,'' said Sámi council member Åsa Larsson Blind.
Blind said that it's unlikely Harvard deliberately ignored consulting the Sámi about the project before moving it to Kiruna, Sweden. More likely, she thinks, they weren't aware that they needed to.
'But at the same time, you don't need to do much research to know that Kiruna is in Sápmi, and that there is an Indigenous people,' Blind said. 'There is one Indigenous people in Europe, and that's the Sámi people, and we are not unknown.'
The idea behind solar geoengineering is that it combats global warming by reflecting sun rays back into space with chemical particles sprayed into the atmosphere. Known as the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, or SCoPEx, the Harvard project would have experimented with the dispersal of those chemicals over Sámi lands. But this kind of climate manipulation goes against Sámi traditional beliefs about caring for nature, the Sámi council wrote in an open letter to Harvard that called for an end to the program. Critically, Harvard also failed to inform the Sámi people of the project or obtain their consent before starting it, the council pointed out, violating their right to free, prior, and informed consent — rights enshrined in international law. Representatives with Harvard's SCoPEx project did not return requests for comment.
The Sámi are not alone in experiencing such violations and joining the ranks of Indigenous peoples relying on international law to challenge 'climate solutions' projects, like SCoPEx, in their territories.
For the third year running, Indigenous leaders have called for a permanent moratorium on carbon markets, carbon offsets, and geoengineering technologies at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, or UNPFII. They also demanded an end to all carbon market initiatives within the U.N., like the REDD+, a $5 billion payment scheme that aims to protect forests through private investment in the carbon market. That call, led by the Indigenous Environmental Network, or IEN, and supported by the American Indian Law Alliance, an Indigenous nonprofit, is now bolstered by an IEN report that documents multiple cases where carbon market, carbon offset, and geoengineering projects have violated Indigenous peoples' rights, and Indigenous people have challenged them. As carbon markets expand into Indigenous homelands, advocates hope these fights for Indigenous rights, in Sápmi and beyond, offer a roadmap to stop a growing industry from exploiting Indigenous peoples.
Depending on how a carbon offset project works to mitigate climate change in design and scale, it generates a certain number of carbon credits — the currency of the carbon market. This allows polluters to offset their emissions by purchasing these credits — governments, businesses, and organizations pay to sequester or remove carbon with things like geoengineering or forest restoration and conservation. Indigenous peoples' land is often targeted for these efforts, given that they manage or have tenure rights over about 40 percent of the world's ecologically intact terrestrial landscapes. Because these healthy ecosystems are prime locations for such work, Indigenous peoples living there can quickly become entangled with or impacted by a developing carbon market — often without their knowledge or consent.
The IEN report details nine cases of 'lawsuits, formal complaints, and public advocacy' where Indigenous peoples, like the Sámi, have invoked the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, known as UNDRIP, to confront and resist initiatives that threaten their lands and well-being.
'I do believe it's positive that UNDRIP is being used,' Blind said. 'Everytime it is cited and it gets recognition, that builds legitimacy. And when we use it boldly and with confidence and we do that together, that builds legitimacy.'
Passed in 2007 by the U.N., UNDRIP contains 46 articles that set the standard for the recognition, protection, and promotion of Indigenous peoples' rights. The IEN study reveals that more than a third of them have been violated by climate solutions projects. Repeated infringements include a lack of transparency from companies, states, and organizations about the scale of their work, intentionally sowing division within Indigenous communities, increased violence and surveillance of Indigenous peoples, and violations to free, prior, and informed consent.
For some Indigenous communities, carbon markets present an opportunity to grow their economies and exercise their rights to self determination. And it's a lucrative industry: The voluntary carbon market saw $16.3 billion in funding by the end of 2024.
Francesca Hillery, a member of the Round Valley Indian Tribe in California, is partnerships director at the Indigenous Greenhouse Gas Removal Commission, or IGGRC, a collective of Indigenous nations in the U.S. working to mitigate climate change through the carbon market.
Hillery said carbon offset projects based in forest or ecosystem restoration often align with Indigenous values and benefit Indigenous communities. But the main benefit to tribes is the financial potential. Tribes in the U.S. need resources to run their governments, Hillery said, and carbon markets may present opportunities for economic growth. In 2015, California's first forest carbon offset project on Indigenous land was developed on the Round Valley tribe's land.
'I do understand that there's this whole critique against the commodification of nature,' Hillery said. 'I just think that tribes are looking for solutions for a bunch of different phenomena.'
But for other Indigenous communities, the expansion of carbon markets raises concerns, especially as some projects have already resulted in Indigenous peoples being evicted from their lands or promised financial compensation that doesn't materialize. In Peru, for example, the Cordillera Azul National Park was created without the consent of the Kichwa people and other Indigenous communities whose territories it overlaps. Then, the Peruvian government and CIMA, the nonprofit set up to run the park, sold more than 28 million carbon credits for the project. According to IEN, the Peruvian government and CIMA refused to recognize Kichwa land claims while simultaneously profiting from carbon credit sales in the park. In an analysis of reports that detail carbon market impacts, the news outlet Carbon Brief found that more than 70 percent of the reports documented evidence of carbon offset projects harming Indigenous people as well as local communities.
All of the court cases outlined in the IEN report are of Indigenous people using UNDRIP to fight against carbon markets. But Joanna Cabello, a senior researcher with SOMO, a Netherlands-based organization that investigates multinational corporations and their impacts on people and environments, said rulings in support of Indigenous land rights are still a boon to communities who might welcome carbon projects. The same logic that upholds Indigenous land rights also affords them the right to choose what they want to do with that land, including joining the carbon market.
'The recognition of [Indigenous] rights is always a strong starting point for any type of [carbon market] project, as that would mean that they have the right to say no to the proposal as well as to hold the companies or organizations behind a project accountable,' Cabello said.
Cabello has studied carbon offset projects for over 20 years and said that while these markets infringing on Indigenous rights is 'not news,' more courts are ruling in favor of Indigenous communities, which isn't usually the case.
In 2020, the Kichwa sued the Peruvian government, contesting its refusal to recognize Indigenous territorial rights, the creation of the conservation project on their territory without consent, and the systematic exclusion from making decisions about or receiving financial benefits from carbon credit sales. In 2023 and 2024, the court agreed with the Kichwa, becoming the first judicial rulings in Peru to recognize and uphold Indigenous territorial rights.
'Hopefully, the more and more that communities are able to reach these verdicts, the more that also governments — even if it's not at the national level, but municipal level or regional level — can start checking who is really benefiting from doing these projects in their territories,' Cabello said. 'Hopefully some will side more with Indigenous peoples' rights.'
Though it's just one tool, Cabello said using UNDRIP like this shows Indigenous communities that denouncing abuse can be met with meaningful recognition — and tells industries that people are watching their work.
Similarly, the letter that the Sámi council issued to Harvard demanding an end to SCoPEx clarified the risks and violations associated with such a project. Not only is it required to obtain consent for activities on their lands, Indigenous people have the right, the Sámi council reminded the university, to maintain and strengthen their spiritual relationship to their traditional lands, uphold their responsibilities to future generations, and make decisions about the territories and resources under their stewardship, including air.
After continued opposition, Harvard's solar geoengineering project was terminated in March 2024.
'That's something, because we don't have many other examples of a huge institution like Harvard backing down after critique from Indigenous peoples,' Blind said, noting that this issue was successfully addressed outside the court of law.
'It is significant to see that it is actually an option to halt something when you realize that it wasn't done right.'

It was the type of gathering where we'd typically share a bottle (or two) of our favorite red, but instead on her vintage coffee table next to a glowing Trudon candle, I saw a ziploc baggie filled with magic mushrooms (slender gray stems with rust-colored caps) and a rainbow Willy Wonka-like shroom chocolate bar. Under nutritional info the label read, 'INGREDIENTS: GOOD TIMES & LAUGHTER.' I offered to pass the bottle of wine, but my friends declined and skipped the nightcap for a mushroom cap, assuring me they were 'super mellow' if I wanted to try one. I wanted to be the cool girl who could 'shroom on a whim, but I'm a pragmatic researcher at heart (hence my job as a reporter). Amused by the chocolate bar packaging, I snapped a pic and shared it to my Instagram stories. Within minutes, my DMs lit up with hearts and messages. 'Ze best! I've been microdosing mushrooms for the last year. Life changing,' one message read. 'When I go out, I take them instead of drinking. I have more fun, I'm more giggly, there's no hangover and I wake up feeling happier and more energized—never anxious and the opposite of depressed. I've gotten probably 15 of my friends on it and they all agree, it's an easy way to cut down or cut out drinking altogether.' Had morel support become the new aperol spritz? Back in 2015, the Global Drug Survey found that 8.6 percent of respondents had used magic mushrooms. By 2021, this number had jumped to 16.1 percent. But most aren't going on full-on hallucinogenic trips, rather they are microdosing mushrooms to lift their mood and energy levels, and many see it as a healthier vice than booze. 'They just make you happy and you have a good time—it's not like alcohol where you're always needing more and chasing the buzz,' says a West coast hair stylist who started selling mushrooms about a year ago. 'Most of my customers are young, female, working professionals like me,' she adds. While the fungus may be trending now, our fascination with them is anything but new. Indigenous cultures around the world have been using magic mushrooms and other psychedelics for thousands of years for emotional, physical, and spiritual healing. Westerners began exploring their medical potential back in the 1950s, but were forced to abandon psychedelic research in the 60s—partly due to reckless use in young people and a backlash against the counterculture movement. Forty years later, research is finally making a comeback and the results are promising. The FDA officially designated psilocybin (the hallucinogenic compound in magic mushrooms) as a 'breakthrough therapy' for severe depression in 2018. Many scientists today see the drug as a new path forward in what's been a frustrating dead end for mental health. 'Treatment has been in a crisis for decades,' says Matthew Wayne Johnson, Ph.D. a professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins. 'Lifespan is decreasing and the two big reasons for that are suicide and addiction—and when you step back and ask what areas psychedelic therapy, like psilocybin, has promising effects for early on, it's things like depression, PTSD, alcohol, and tobacco.' Doses given in therapeutic settings (aka macrodoses) are much larger than a typical recreational dose, and are closely monitored to make the patient feel safe and reassure them if anxiety comes up—which does occur in about a third of cases, says Dr. Johnson. The lasting effects from these sessions are hard to ignore: Talk therapy paired with two macrodoses of psilocybin may reduce heavy drinking by 83 percent, according to new research out of New York University. Another study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found two macrodoses of the drug relieved major depressive disorder symptoms in adults for up to an entire year. And a smoking cessation study with psilocybin out of John Hopkins found a 67 percent abstinence rate after 12 months. A theory as to why: Mushrooms stimulate neuroplasticity in the brain. 'Psilocybin seems to make the brain more flexible and what you experience—your consciousness or what you're thinking and feeling—more flexible,' says Dr. Johnson. 'Regions in the brain that normally talk a lot will communicate less on psilocybin in favor of communicating with their distant neighbors more.' Meaning the brain makes connections and associations it doesn't normally make. This causes a perspective shift that appears to reduce excessive rumination and self-focus, which may allow people to escape unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. If these macrodoses have such potential, it seems reasonable to wonder whether microdoses could have perks too. The growing wellness trend involves ingesting very small amounts of psychedelics (roughly 0.1 to 0.5 g), like magic mushrooms or LSD which won't trigger hallucinations, but can give a burst of energy, creativity, and make the world feel like it's in 'high-def' in a way that benefits mood. That said, scientific research on the benefits of microdosing remains limited and results have been mixed. 'At this time, there is no strong empirical support for [microdosing's] effectiveness,' says Harriet De Wit, Ph.D. professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago. 'It is quite possible that the drug(s) have therapeutic potential, but currently most of our information comes from uncontrolled user reports.' Studies of microdosers that have shown improvements in mood, attention, and creativity are all self-reported—which means they can't eliminate the placebo effect (i.e. the bias or expectation the person had that microdosing would make them feel better). Julie Holland, MD a psychopharmacologist and author of Good Chemistry, says when compared to alcohol, the benefits are clear: mushrooms are anti-inflammatory, promote neuroplasticity, are non-toxic to the liver and brain (aka no hangovers), not particularly addictive, and because they don't cause the munchies, there's no added calories. But of course, she also notes that mushrooms are still illegal in 49 of 50 states, experiences can be heavily influenced by the setting or one's mood, and it could be harder to stay safe in an altered state when you are 'distracted by beautiful traffic lights.' Although adverse effects do appear to be rare, reports indicate there is evidence that microdosing can damage the heart over time. According to the 2021 Global Drug Survey, more than 77 percent of respondents who had microdosed mushrooms in the last year reported no unwanted effects. The survey also found that people taking magic mushrooms needed less emergency medical treatment than those using other recreational drugs, including alcohol and cannabis. As of January 1st, Oregon became the first state in the U.S. to legalize the adult use of psilocybin; a similar law goes into effect in Colorado in 2024. That said, don't expect to see 'shroom dispensaries any time soon. These new laws don't allow for retail sales of magic mushrooms, only onsite consumption (for those over 21) in a supervised setting with 'certified mushroom facilitators.' (Those interested in other states do have the option of signing up for psilocybin clinical trials at In the meantime, the mushroom black market is happy to fill in the voids. In addition to gummies and chocolates, you can find 'shrooms freeze-dried, as teas, truffles, and capsules. Even venture capital firms have taken notice and are funneling money into startups developing psychedelic treatments—that aren't even legal yet—for everything from PTSD and smoking cessation to headaches, traumatic brain injury, eating disorders and Alzheimer's disease. 'I often take it before the gym because it gives me energy,' says a micro-dosing business owner and mother of two in San Diego. She says before shrooms, alcohol was 'the biggest crutch,' her go-to after a hard day. 'Now with mushrooms my mind doesn't even go there. Okay, I've a hard day? I'm gonna go home and take a bath and like go to bed early so I can wake up and go to the gym.' And there are other perks, she says with a laugh: 'I swear, if my kids ask 'do you wanna craft?' Perspective: I'm a Harvard professor. Here's why publicly funded scientific research matters
Drastic budget cuts at the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies have put federally funded university research into the spotlight. As a professor at Harvard, I've recently been asked why the U.S. government funds university research and why universities with endowments, like Harvard, don't fund their own research through their endowments. After two decades of being a professor and part-time entrepreneur, I understand why people ask this question, and it's a fair one. Today, more than ever, we as a nation need to work toward open respectful dialogue that cross-cuts political ideologies. To that end, I'm always happy to share my perspective, which is that federally funded research is a public good with proven benefits. While Harvard is in the spotlight right now, such research goes on across the country, from Brigham Young University to the University of Minnesota to Kent State. You have personally benefited from it, in fact, if you take one of today's popular weight-loss drugs, or wear a seat belt in your car. First, some background on how this collaboration began: During World War II, the federal government began providing funding for university scientists to do research related to the war effort. The benefits soon became clear. Universities were more nimble and cost-effective than federal labs that would need thousands of staff scientists and dedicated facilities. And universities already employed scientists across a diversity of fields who could collaborate on projects as needed. As such, to maintain U.S. intellectual leadership, the government established many of the funding agencies that exist today. The process is designed for efficiency, in multiple ways. Scientists compete for federal research dollars. The government issues requests for proposals on topics that reflect federal and societal priorities, and scientists submit proposals to compete for these grants. It often takes scientists months to develop a robust research plan and a federally compliant budget, and universities largely bear the associated costs. The proposals are critically reviewed by program officers and by a panel of peers. 'Peers' in this context are colleagues who are knowledgeable in the field and can judge the quality of the proposals. Peers with conflicts of interest are disqualified. The competition for funds, which are usually insufficient to award all meritorious proposals, is so fierce that, success rates at many agencies range from 8% to 30%. The amount of financial support awarded also varies by field. Biomedical research, engineering, computer science and chemistry programs typically have access to higher levels of funding to support the higher costs of this work. In contrast, support for scientific fields such as zoology and anthropology is far more modest. Federal research grants, by design, include direct and indirect costs. Direct costs are funds to be spent solely on the approved specific activities. These can include research supplies, graduate student stipends and economy-class travel to field sites and professional conferences. Indirect costs are meant to offset the cost of building maintenance, safety officers, and administrators who ensure that scholars are spending federal tax dollars appropriately. Indirect costs, while controversial, can save taxpayer dollars. For example, indirect-cost funding can be used to acquire shared equipment such as DNA sequencers that can be used by the entire research community, alleviating the need for each scientist to purchase their own equipment. It's important to know that indirect costs are not blank checks to universities. They are not slush funds; they cannot be used to build fancy gymnasiums or host lavish parties. They are, however, a means of incentivizing universities to maintain state-of-the-art facilities that serve the public good. Indirect cost rates are set every few years by the government, which bases the rate on a variety of factors such as the scope of the research at each institution. A liberal arts college might have a 10% rate, meaning the award will include the direct costs plus an additional 10% to offset the administrative and infrastructure needs. A world-leading research university might be given 65% to maintain or operate state-of-the-art facilities such as MRIs or particle accelerators. All institutions receiving such funds must adhere to a strict set of accounting requirements or risk severe penalties. Today, increases in material costs and a complex state/federal regulatory landscape put financial and administrative pressure on universities, and the indirect supplement can easily exceed the actual cost of the research, leaving universities to scramble to find additional funds to cover those costs. Most notably, endowments and gifts cannot replace federal research funds. Endowments are financial gifts meant to provide long-term support for a specific activity, such as paying a professorial salary line or maintaining a building named for the donor. Many endowments support priceless collections, such as the Harvard University library, which holds 400 million manuscripts, 10 million photographs and 1 million maps. These holdings are part of our collective national heritage, and their curation and maintenance come at little or no cost to the taxpayer. Though it is tempting to think that philanthropy can assume the role of federal funding, that idea is impractical. Very few people make unrestricted donations to a university, and fewer yet make donations large enough to replace federal research support. Put simply, endowments cannot fully support university research in the long term, and even AI won't end the need for such research, which leads to innovation and economic opportunity. Federally funded research serves the public good; it is done for the people, by the people. It leads to new technologies, from medical treatments to artificial intelligence. For example, research on Gila monster venom (North America's only venomous lizard) contributed to the development of the popular GLP-1 weight loss drugs. Seat belts were invented with help from research at the University of Minnesota; the LCD display, via Kent State; organ transplants, via Harvard; and Parkinson's disease diagnostics via Brigham Young University. And, of course, universities also provide training opportunities for the next generation of scientists and engineers, most of whom enter the private sector. The U.S. spends less than 3.5% of its GDP on research. Reducing or eliminating federal research will not lead to a significant reduction in our national debt. It will, however, stifle the technological developments that lead to economic growth. It will make us more vulnerable to threats from other nations who will relish the opportunity to gain any technological and economic advantage. Federally funded research is a great deal for the American public. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. As with all large, complex enterprises, there are factors that hinder progress and waste resources, and these do need to be addressed. But publicly funded research is one of our country's engines of innovation, and emptying the proverbial fuel tank ensures that we will not be going anywhere anytime soon. Aussie renter's 250 million-year-old discovery in inner-city backyard
An Aussie woman has made an astonishing ancient discovery in the backyard of her inner-city rental home. During one particularly rainy day earlier this month, the Sydney renter noticed an 'unusual' pattern emerge on a large, heavy rock propped up in her garden. 'It was quite dirty so it wasn't until it washed off a bit that I went 'oh, it's got something on it',' the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told Yahoo News. Intrigued by the intricate detail 'all over' the chunk of sandstone, she decided to take a photo. 'Then I realised it was a fossil,' she said, adding she believes the owner of the property must have placed it there after 'digging out' an old cellar on the property. Although she has never ventured inside the 'scary' underground room, the woman said her partner had spotted an 'original stove' inside. Seeking answers about what could have created the pattern on the huge stone, the curious resident sought help from Aussie fossickers online. The clusters of fine lines seen on the stone were created by 'a group of animals known as Bryozoa, which are simple aquatic invertebrates that we still have today', she explained. 'This one in particular is called Fenestella. It's from the mid-Permian, so before the dinosaurs, at around 272 to 259 million years old!' Hurst, from Macquarie University, told Yahoo the fossil is likely from the Fenestella Shale Member exposed at Mulbring Quarry in the Hunter Valley. 'So not originally from Sydney or the cellar of the property, but slightly further afield,' she said. 'It's a beautiful specimen, and quite a common find from that area.' While they are found around the world, in Australia fossilised Fenestella is primarily seen in the Sydney Basin and the NSW's South Coast.
