Wings select Paige Bueckers No. 1 overall in 2025 WNBA Draft
The 2025 WNBA Draft began just how everyone expected, as UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers was selected first overall by the Dallas Wings on Monday night.
Last year, it was Caitlin Clark coming out of Iowa as the consensus top selection, and the Indiana Fever made it so when they called her name. Clark went on to win the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, breaking records along the way.
Bueckers has had No. 1 pick potential since she entered UConn. Seeing it come to fruition, fresh off a national title run with her sisters on the court, was "overwhelming" for the new star of the Wings.
"Just an overwhelming sense of gratitude. It's super surreal to be here with other draft invitees," Bueckers said after she heard her name called.
Bueckers becoming a national champion with the Huskies put a cherry on top of a brilliant career for the Hopkins, Minnesota native.
Her senior season saw 19.9 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.4 rebounds averaged per game, while shooting 53.4% from the field and 41.9% from deep. Bueckers' ability to score anywhere on the floor, and truly have Geno Auriemma's offense run through her was on full display throughout the year, including the NCAA Tournament.
Bueckers notched her fourth straight All-Tournament Team nod from the NCAA for her performances when it mattered most.
She wasn't able to secure a spot in the national championship game, though, during her junior season, falling to Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes that year.
But the Huskies charged all the way back to win it over South Carolina in dominating fashion earlier this month. Bueckers was named an AP All-American for the third time in her illustrious college career.
Heading into the WNBA, Bueckers' expectations are through the roof, joining a team in Dallas that is led by All-Star Arike Ogunbowale, who could use another dynamic guard to work with.
During her four years at UConn, Bueckers averaged 19.8 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds and shot 53.1% from the field over 123 career games.

Katie Ledecky, Bobby Finke, Gretchen Walsh win third titles at nationals, history calls at worlds
Katie Ledecky, Bobby Finke and Gretchen Walsh capped the Toyota U.S. Swimming Championships by each winning their third event of the meet on Saturday. They will lead the U.S. team at the World Championships in July and August in Singapore. Ledecky extended a 15-year win streak in the 1500m freestyle, an event where she holds the 23 fastest times in history. She clocked 15 minutes, 36.76 seconds, distancing the field by more than 25 seconds in Indianapolis. Ledecky has the world's fastest times this year in the 400m, 800m and 1500m frees. She is also one medal shy of Ryan Lochte for the second-most total medals in championships history. Phelps earned 33, Lochte had 27 and Ledecky is at 26 overall. Australian Ariarne Titmus, the Olympic 400m free gold medalist and 800m free silver medalist, is taking a break from competition this year. So Ledecky's primary competition will be 18-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh, the Olympic 400m free silver medalist ahead of Ledecky. McIntosh is also the second-fastest woman in history in the 800m free behind Ledecky. She did not race it at the Paris Games, but said last week that she might do so in Singapore. Walsh has the world's top times this year in the 50m and 100m butterflies and the 50m free, which she won at nationals on Saturday. Walsh tied training partner Kate Douglass' American record of 23.91 seconds. She seeks her first individual title at a major international meet in a 50-meter pool. Walsh won seven gold medals and broke nine individual world records at last December's world short course championships in the less-used 25-meter pool. Finke won the 800m and 1500m frees at nationals — his two Olympic gold medal events — plus the 400m individual medley, though he won't race that event at worlds. The 1500m free and 400m IM finals are in the same session in Singapore. Finke is already a world champion in the 800m, but in the 1500m he will bid to become the first American man to win that event at worlds since Tim Shaw in 1975. Indiana is still without superstar Caitlin Clark for at least another week while she recovers from a quad injury. It revealed that guard Sophie Cunningham will be out with an ankle injury. Indiana got battered with injuries in their last game against Connecticut. The Fever lost both Cunningham and backup point guard Sydney Colson during that game. It clearly got the Fever out of sorts early and they never recovered, giving the Sun their first win of the season. Colson was not listed on the injury report, which suggests she could play on Tuesday. That would give the Fever a huge boost ahead of what feels like a must-win game. Indiana also got some positive injury news over the weekend. MRIs revealed that neither player suffered a long-term injury, per head coach Stephanie White.
