Boston-area cafés grapple with remote work

Boston-area coffee shops are trying to strike a balance between welcoming patrons who work remotely and preventing them from hogging table space other customers would use.
Why it matters: Coffee shops nationwide are grappling with the same issue, with some shops cutting off WiFi or banning laptops altogether.
The big picture: While many companies are now enforcing return-to-work policies, remote work numbers are still higher now than they were pre-pandemic, per the Census.

Some spots are all-in on the Luddite game — aka no internet or laptops at all. Others limit their use to certain time stretches or days of the week.
Others have taped over outlets.
Meanwhile, Starbucks killed its open-door policy earlier this year, requiring that customers now have to purchase something to hang in their stores, browse the internet or use the restroom.
Zoom in: One South Boston coffee shop, Greystone, has banned laptops at its tables in hopes of fostering in-person connections, CBS Boston reported.
Remnant Brewery in Bow Market, which sells coffee and tea alongside booze during the day, started asking patrons last year to put away their laptops at night to make room for the crowds at the bar and their nighttime events.
Lovestruck Books, a Harvard Square bookstore and cafe that opened in January, also offers a compromise for remote workers. It allows laptop and iPad use at its tables, day and night, with free WiFi — but limits table seating to one hour on Saturdays and Sundays until 4pm.
What they're saying: "Our goal is to foster an environment for all guests to enjoy whether they wish to work on their next novel or disconnect from devices," Lovestruck wrote on Instagram in March.

Warren Buffett's simple investing strategy propeled Berkshire Hathaway to market-beating returns since 1965. Buffett likes investing in companies that return money to shareholders through dividends, because they compound his returns more quickly. Three of Berkshire's holdings, which represent almost half of the value of its portfolio, could deliver $1.6 billion in dividend payments this year. 10 stocks we like better than Apple › Warren Buffett has been the CEO of the Berkshire Hathaway holding company since 1965. He plans to step down at the end of this year, but he will continue serving as chairman of the board. Even without the Oracle of Omaha at the helm, Buffett's successful brand of long-term investing is expected to continue. Buffett typically invests in growing companies with reliable profits and strong management teams. He especially likes companies with shareholder-friendly initiatives like dividend schemes and stock buyback programs, because they compound his returns much faster. Buffett's strategy has been so successful that a $1,000 investment in Berkshire stock in 1965 would have been worth a staggering $44.7 million at the end of 2024. The same investment in the S&P 500 would have grown to just $342,906. Berkshire holds a number of dividend-paying stocks, but three of them represent 47.7% of the total value of its $282 billion portfolio of publicly traded securities. Assuming Buffett and his team don't sell a single share in those companies, they could net the conglomerate a whopping $1.6 billion in dividends this year alone. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is the $3 trillion juggernaut responsible for some of the world's most popular consumer devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac line of computers. Buffett and his team spent around $38 billion buying Apple shares between 2016 and 2023, and the value of that position grew to an eye-popping $170 billion heading into 2024. It accounted for more than half of the value of Berkshire's entire portfolio at that point, so Buffett and his team sold half the position last year to reduce some of the concentration risk. Apple is still Berkshire's largest holding with a 21.7% weighting in its portfolio, but the conglomerate's performance is now less susceptible to the fate of one single stock. So far this year, Berkshire earned a quarterly dividend payment of $0.25 per share from Apple on Feb. 13, and a second payment of $0.26 per share on May 15. It's likely to receive two more payments of $0.26 per share this year, bringing its total per-share payments to $1.03 in 2025. The conglomerate currently holds 300 million Apple shares, so that would translate to $309 million in dividends this calendar year. But the value of Berkshire's Apple position is currently $61 billion, so its dividend yield is just 0.5%. Cash in the bank pays a better return than that right now, but it's still a nice bonus on top of the incredible capital growth Berkshire earned in its time as an Apple shareholder. American Express (NYSE: AXP) is a global payments giant with a presence in over 200 countries. Unlike its competitors, the company operates a closed-loop ecosystem, which means it runs its own payments network, issues its own cards to consumers and businesses, and also funds the underlying lines of credit. The result is multiple revenue streams and significantly more control over its operating performance. Berkshire spent around $1.3 billion accumulating a stake in American Express during the 1990s, and it has been a cornerstone of the conglomerate's portfolio ever since. Berkshire currently owns one-fifth of the entire company, and its 151.6 million shares are currently worth $44.9 billion, which accounts for 15.9% of the value of its portfolio. So far in 2025, Berkshire has earned two quarterly dividend payments from American Express. The first was for $0.70 per share on Feb. 10, and the second was for $0.82 per share on May 9. There will likely be two more quarterly payments of $0.82 per share this year, translating to total per-share payments of $3.16 in 2025. Assuming Berkshire doesn't sell any of its 151.6 million shares, it stands to earn $479 million in dividends this year alone. That equals a yield of around 1.1%. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) is the world's largest beverage company. It's home to over 200 individual brands including its namesake, Schweppes, Powerade, Vitamin Water, Sprite, and Fanta, which it sells in more than 200 countries. Coca-Cola has built an incredible distribution network, which includes popular fast-food chains like McDonald's, to ensure its products are constantly in front of consumers. Buffett accumulated 400 million shares in Coca-Cola on Berkshire's behalf between 1988 and 1994, spending around $1.3 billion in total. He has never sold a share, and the position is now worth a whopping $28.5 billion, which accounts for 10.1% of the conglomerate's portfolio. Coca-Cola also paid Berkshire $776 million in dividends last year, so the investing powerhouse basically recoups its initial $1.3 billion outlay every two years on top of the incredible capital growth. Coca-Cola increased its dividend at the start of 2025, paying $0.51 per share during the first quarter. It's likely to remain at that level for the rest of the year if history is any guide, placing Berkshire on track to earn $2.04 in dividends per share in 2025. Assuming it doesn't sell any of its 400 million shares, that means the conglomerate stands to earn $816 million in payments (a yield of 2.8%). Berkshire's Coca-Cola position is one of the best examples of Buffett's investing strategy in action, as he relies on time and the magic of compounding to do the heavy lifting for him. If they do, they would have plenty of players drawing interest in the trade market. Advertisement MLB insider for the New York Post, Jon Heyman, went on MLB Network and painted the picture for the Red Sox amid the trade deadline speculation. Heyman reported that the Red Sox, while having solid trade pieces, do not want to sell. "They've got some pieces as well," Heyman said. "But as I said, even a few games under .500, they do not want to sell." The Red Sox not wanting to be sellers isn't a surprise, as it would indicate that the team is out of contention for the postseason. Missing the postseason again could also cause Red Sox manager Alex Cora to lose his job. So, with Cora's job on the line and a postseason berth still within reach, the Red Sox do not want to be sellers. Advertisement However, in a situation where they do end up becoming sellers, they would have plenty of assets available. "There would be big interest in Jarren Duran if they do decide to sell," Heyman added. "I'm not saying it's likely they'll sell, but if they do, it should be a very good sale." Tim Heitman-Imagn Images Heyman continued talking about some of the options for the Red Sox to sell, including two pitchers on one-year deals. "Walker Buehler, very solid pitcher on a one-year deal," said Heyman. "Another guy on a one-year deal, Aroldis Chapman, 1.80 ERA, he's having a big year. He's hit 103 miles an hour." Both Chapman and Buehler could be moved if the Red Sox fall out of the postseason race. They'd have plenty of teams lining up for those two players, and it'd be an even longer line for Duran. Advertisement While the Red Sox don't plan to be sellers and hope to rebound and make a postseason push, the options on the roster if they do sell are great. Duran, Buehler, and Chapman would all be highly coveted. If the Red Sox do become sellers, while the Red Sox fandom would be disappointed, they would likely net a solid return on a few of their players in the trade market. Boston Legacy FC unveils new team crest: ‘It's been a learning process. We had a hiccup'

Boston Legacy FC has learned a crucial lesson before even setting foot on the field or signing a player: It's OK to try again. 'It's been a learning process and we had a hiccup when we launched the first pieces of our brand, as you know and everyone else knows,' owner and controlling manager Jennifer Epstein told on Friday. Advertisement While 'hiccup' might be an understatement of how the first attempt at a brand launch went for the 15th NWSL club, between the original name of BOS Nation FC and the 'Too Many Balls' campaign, everyone in Boston gave themselves time and space not just to own it and learn, but to move on. In March, the team announced its new name. When it came time to think through the launch of the first crest and brand, the club took its time. Set to begin play next year, Boston Legacy FC is ready to spread its wings, completing a five-month design process following the team's decision to rebrand. As part of that, Legacy FC hired experienced designer Matthew Wolff to lead the specific project of the new crest, with the team name already announced and the colors dating back to the team's original launch last year. The club sought an expert they could trust — enter Wolff, a known designer in the soccer world — and enlisted brand advisors in addition to their own input to ensure they had a range of viewpoints for their second attempt. Advertisement 'Opening it up to a plurality of perspectives and voices really helped us drill down and do something that we think is beautiful, but also mixes older and newer and is the perfect symbol for this new legacy that we are building here in Boston,' Epstein said. Rather than using the entire team name, the crest simply says Boston. The team will celebrate the new identity with a party on Boston Common on Saturday. Wolff is no stranger to stepping into a project where a course correction is needed. His first NWSL project was in 2020 with Racing Louisville FC, following their original launch as Proof Louisville FC. Since then, he has also worked with Gotham FC and the San Diego Wave. 'Intentionality matters,' Wolff told before getting into what he has learned from his work across the league over the past five years. 'Women's soccer fans really care about the way that their clubs look, the way that their clubs feel, what their clubs represent. There's a high standard, and there should be a high standard for this.' Advertisement As a designer, Wolff is a proponent of the idea that a club's crest and visual identity directly contribute to the growth of the game. As for the crest itself, it wasn't always a given that the swan would be the centerpiece of the design. The idea kept coming up in conversations, though, according to Wolff, and they realized it was strong enough to build the entire identity around. 'Swans have a long history in the city of Boston. They're iconic birds that populate the Charles and Mystic (rivers). Of course, they reside in the Boston Public Garden, which is in the Emerald Necklace, which extends through to where our home pitch will be at White Stadium,' Epstein said. And looking at the rest of the crests across the league, while the Washington Spirit have a nod to the eagle in theirs, a bird would stand out from the rest. 'Swans are extraordinarily fierce and extraordinarily loyal. Doesn't that sound like a Bostonian to you?' Wolff asked. 'Swans are elegant and fierce and loyal. That's Boston, that's Boston sports. Early on, we realised there was some mirroring of the animal and the club's values and Bostonians' personalities. The triangulation of those three things made it feel like the right move for the center of the crest.' Advertisement The team's explainer also makes a nod to 'Romeo and Juliet,' a pair of swans that summered in the Boston Public Garden for years. Both swans were female. It's a fun aside that should be popular with supporters, even if it wasn't directly an influence on the design itself. Once the swan was set, there were the smaller details to fine-tune. Each feather represents one of the original eight teams of the NWSL from its launch in 2013. The Boston Breakers, the previous NWSL team in the city until 2018, were always alphabetically at the top of that list. 'The Breakers obviously are a really important part of Boston soccer, Boston sports, women's sports, women's soccer history,' Wolff said. The initial design brief always had a nod to them in some way, listed as one of the priorities. The angle of the feathers is also a nod to the Zakim Bridge, which crosses the Charles River into the North End of Boston and was also featured on Boston's interim crest used in the early days of the expansion team. Advertisement 'When I'm working on a football crest, I want to represent the football club and the women who are going to compete on the pitch,' Wolff said. 'But of equal, if not more, importance, is representing the entire city, the entire community — so a powerful football crest can really draw people that maybe weren't originally interested in the sport to the sport.' If done right, said Wolff, a crest represents the player, the club, the local, the fan, but their family too, their neighbors, the community itself. There was no ignoring the power of sports in Boston on this project, something Wolff said he thought about frequently at a time when we gather as communities less and less. Yes, there is brand power in using Boston rather than Legacy FC — an instant shortcut to the city's culture as a whole, but it also seems to be one half of a promise from the club. The critical work right now, Epstein said, is building the relationships and trust with the community of Boston and the greater area. 'This is just the beginning. We want to see that long-term pride and loyalty from our fans in the city as a whole, in what we are building. It's always at the core of what we are doing — thinking about the community and how we can bring them in.' This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
