Himachal reports first COVID-19 case in latest surge as 82-year-old woman tests positive
An 82-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday at the Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College in Nahan in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmour district.
Sources said the woman, who already has age-related complications, is a resident of Sarahan in Sirmour, and came to the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms.
Dr Amitabh Jain, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Sirmaur, said the woman tested positive through a rapid antigen test, and her sample will be sent to Mandi for genome sequencing to identify the variant.
Dr Jain said following the positive test, the block medical officer (BMO) was instructed to trace and test all individuals who came in contact with the woman.
He added that the oxygen plant at Nahan Medical College is fully functional, ICU facilities have been arranged, and a requisition for RT-PCR test kits has also been sent to the concerned department.
Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh Health Department has issued an advisory urging public caution, making mask-wearing mandatory in hospitals, and strongly recommended for senior citizens, children, and those with co-morbidities in crowded areas.
The advisory, approved by the secretary (Health), urged people in the state to follow the precautions strictly.
According to the national COVID dashboard, there are 4,302 active cases in the country, with the highest number in Kerala at 1,373, followed by Maharashtra at 510, Gujarat at 461, and Delhi at 457 cases.

Kerala continues to be the most affected state, with over 1,600 active cases, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal, and Delhi. Given the rising cases, the Centre conducted mock drills to check hospital preparedness. Delhi reported 30 new Covid-19 cases, raising active infections to 592, with no new deaths since Thursday, keeping the total fatalities at seven since January 1. Maharashtra has seen a rise in Covid-19 cases, with 114 new infections reported on Friday, taking the state's total to 1,276 cases since January. Unfortunately, one more death was recorded, bringing the toll to 18. Pune (44 cases) and Mumbai (37 cases) reported the highest numbers, followed by Mira Bhayandar and Panvel with seven cases each. West Bengal reported 58 new Covid-19 cases and 91 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The total active cases now stand at 596, with the death toll remaining at one. The central government has directed all states to ensure adequate availability of oxygen, ventilators, isolation beds and essential medicines. Dr. Sunita Sharma, DGHS, chaired technical review meetings on June 2-3 with key health and disaster management agencies and state representatives. The meetings aimed to assess the current Covid-19 situation and review preparedness measures. In May 2023, the World Health Organization declared an end to Covid-19's status as a public health emergency. Today, health experts characterise the disease as seasonal, endemic, persistent, or localised to specific areas.

Uttarakhand: 7 people test positive for COVID-19 in Dehradun
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 7 (ANI): Seven people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Dehradun, taking the total number of cases in the district to 29. On Friday, three people from Rishikesh, one from Sahaspur, and three from the Raipur region were infected with coronavirus. According to the Health Department, 25 patients were tested for COVID-19 on Friday, seven of whom were reported to be positive. The health department is looking for people who came in contact with the infected patients. "Should also train teachers on how we can prevent COVID": Odisha Minister Nityananda Gond
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 7 (ANI): Odisha Education Minister Nityananda Gond said the government is cautious about COVID-19 and that teachers should be trained to prevent COVID-19 infection when exposure to the virus cannot be avoided. Speaking to ANI on Friday, Minister Nityananda Gond said, '...We are cautious in this regard, and we will follow the instructions issued by the Government of India and the state government... We should also train teachers on how we can prevent COVID infection at a time when we cannot avoid exposure...' According to the Union Ministry of Health, there were 23 active COVID-19 cases in Odisha as of 8 AM on June 7. On Sunday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state was 12, according to the Director of Public Health, Government of Odisha, Dr Nilakantha Mishra. 'The number of cases is very low, and almost all patients diagnosed with COVID have mild symptoms. They are being treated in isolation in their own homes,' Dr Mishra told ANI. He further reassured the public, stating that the variants detected in the state are sublineages of Omicron, and there is no cause for concern at this point.
