Officials announce surprising project tapping forgotten coal mines for next-gen power: 'We see great potential'
A cutting-edge project aims to provide low-carbon heating to 750 homes in a newly developed English community, with a focus on sustainability.
Seaham Garden Village will be home to a project that converts heated water from abandoned mines into a sustainable heat source for hundreds of people.
The project is being led by the Mining Remediation Authority in partnership with Durham County Council, according to Environment+Energy Leader. It will use geothermal energy that will then be processed through a heat pump system.
Geothermal energy is thermal energy that has been extracted from the Earth's interior. As a renewable energy source, it can reduce reliance on fossil fuels since the heat is continuously produced within the Earth. This energy can be used for heating, cooling, and generating electricity.
Richard Bond, innovation and services director at the Mining Remediation Authority, applauded the advancement of the technology. "This scheme is a further milestone in our journey to harness mine water heat to provide sustainable heating solutions across the former coalfields," Bond said.
"We see great potential in our 80-plus mine water treatment facilities across the UK to protect water supplies and generate renewable heat," Bond added.
Although initial installation costs may be higher than those of traditional systems, geothermal systems can offer significant energy savings and lower operating costs due to their high efficiency. This is because geothermal energy doesn't require fuel to generate electricity, which further benefits the environment.
The United Kingdom is home to a large number of abandoned mines, estimated to be in the thousands. According to a study, there are about 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales alone. This can open the door for the potential use of geothermal energy nationwide.
Councilor Mark Wilkes, cabinet member for neighborhoods and climate change at Durham County Council, emphasized the project's push toward sustainability. "We are delighted to have started work on the UK's first large-scale mine water heat project utilizing a mine water treatment scheme," Wilkes said.
"This innovative project will have significant environmental benefits—providing low-carbon heat while reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources," Wilkes added.

‘Vast Majority' of new homes will have solar panels, says Miliband
Builders could be required to install solar panels on the 'vast majority' of new homes in England, according to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. It comes a month after Downing Street confirmed the panels should be installed on as many new properties as possible amid speculation that ministers will make them a mandatory requirement on new builds by 2027. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Miliband described the proposed policy as 'just common sense' and said the panels should be 'almost universal' on English homes. Changes to regulations will be laid out in the Future Homes Standard, due to be published later this year. The previous Conservative Government considered a proposal that would have mandated rooftop solar panels to cover 40% of a building's ground area or equivalent. 'The problem about the previous system was that it said you would had to have a certain percentage of coverage of solar panels, but if you couldn't achieve that percentage, you didn't have to do anything at all,' Mr Miliband said. 'Under our plans, we are not going to say that. We are going to say even if you can't hit 40% you will still have to have some solar panels, except in rare, exceptional cases.' He added that the number of homes fitted with solar panels needed to be 'much higher'. The policy is estimated to add between £3,000 and £4,000 to the cost of construction, but to then save owners more than £1,000 on their annual energy bills, according to the Times, which first reported the change. Asked in May whether housebuilders would be legally required to fit the panels, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's official spokesman said: 'Of course we want to see solar panels on as many new homes as possible. 'The Future Homes Standard, which will be published in the coming months, will include measures to drive this, we're working on the detail of that and will provide an update on that in due course. 'But it's good news for householders who want lower energy bills.' Under the Government's new proposals, 80% of new builds would reportedly be required to have solar panels covering 40% of their ground area, while 19% would have slightly fewer because of exemptions, including roof pitch and overshading. Ministers last year rejected a private members' Bill aiming to force housebuilders to install solar panels on the roof of every new home, saying the proposals would potentially slow down construction and add to building manifesto included a pledge to build 1.5 million new homes over the course of the Parliament.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Is 'Vibe Coding' a Website for Fun
Vibe coding is the process of prompting AI to write code, instead of doing it manually. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed that he has been "vibe coding," or using AI to code for him through prompts, to build a webpage. Pichai said on Wednesday at Bloomberg Tech in San Francisco that he had been experimenting with AI coding assistants Cursor and Replit, both of which are advertised as able to create code from text prompts, to build a new webpage. Vibe coding is a term coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy. In a post on X in February, Karpathy described how AI tools are getting good enough that software developers can "forget that the code even exists." Instead, they can ask for AI to code on their behalf and create a project or web app without writing a line of code themselves. One AI coding tool, Cursor, became the fastest-growing software app to reach $100 million in annual revenue in January. Almost all of Cursor's revenue comes from 360,000 individual subscribers, not big enterprises. However, that balance could change: As of earlier this week, Amazon is reportedly in talks to adopt Cursor for its employees. Another coding tool, Replit, says it has enabled users to make more than two million apps in six months. The company has 34 million global users as of November. Lenard Flören, a 28-year-old art director with no prior coding experience, told NBC News last month that he used AI tools to vibe code a personalized workout tracking app. Harvard University neuroscience student, Rishab Jain, 20, told the outlet that he used Replit to vibe code an app that translates ancient texts into English. Instead of downloading someone else's app and paying a subscription fee, "now you can just make it," Jain said. Popular vibe coding tools offer a free entry point into vibe coding, as well as subscription plans. Replit has a free tier, a $20 a month core level with expanded capabilities, such as unlimited private and public apps, and a $35 per user, per month teams subscription. Cursor also has a free tier, a $20 per month pro level, and a $40 per user, per month, business subscription. Despite the existence of vibe coding, Pichai still thinks that human software engineers are necessary. At Bloomberg Tech on Wednesday, Pichai said that Google will keep hiring human engineers and growing its engineering workforce "even into next year" because a bigger workforce "allows us to do more." "I just view this [AI] as making engineers dramatically more productive," he said. Alphabet is the fifth most valuable company in the world with a market cap of $2 trillion.
