The Aussie design icon dreamed up in the outback 90 years ago – and still going strong today
In an era when products are increasingly disposable, one Australian heritage brand is championing lasting quality above all else.
The story of R.M.Williams began in the outback in 1932, when the world was a very different place.
So what enduring characteristics have helped the company continue to thrive more than 90 years later?
The origin story
The The very first R.M.Williams boots were crafted with a specific purpose in mind – to outlast all others.
A young Redinald Murray 'RM' Williams was camping in the South Australian bush when he observed the complaints of local stockmen, fed up with their boots wearing out after long days in the saddle.
Working alongside a local craftsman, Dollar Mick, RM found that the answer was to make a boot from a single piece of leather.
Together, they would make the very first R.M.Williams boot – starting off a remarkable Australian legacy.
Unique design, crafted by hand
Today, artisans continue to craft every boot by hand in RM's workshop in Adelaide, using the same method he pioneered.
It's safe to say this isn't the easiest or quickest way to go about things, but it still results in a pair of boots that are timeless, iconic, and most importantly, made to last.
After all, using a single piece of leather requires only one reinforced seam at the heel, eliminating points of weakness and maximising the material's inherent strength.
And with leather naturally conforming to the foot with wear, it also produces a smoother, more comfortable fit that improves with time.
R.M.Williams also employs the Goodyear welt process, which involves stitching a leather strip to the innersole of the boot, creating a lip of leather that the outersole can then be stitched to.
This doesn't just make the boots more durable than lower quality options that are glued together – it also means they can be easily resoled without damaging the structure.
The use of high-quality materials further contributes to their remarkable longevity, which makes them less of a one-off purchase, and more of a long-term investment.
It's a reflection of the effectiveness of this system that one in every 10 boot transactions R.M.Williams sees is for a repair service, with some customers wearing the same pair for more than 60 years.
From outback to city
In their ability to overcome the challenges of the outback, R.M.Williams boots became the stuff of local legend.
But news of their unrelenting quality quickly spread beyond Australia, gaining this very Aussie icon its current reputation as one of the world's best-loved boot brands.
Products like their iconic Chelsea Boot might have been designed to survive the punishing environment of the outback, but their comfort, style and versatility makes them ideally suited to city life too.
Grounded in the UK
More than 9,000 away from their home in Australia, R.M.Williams boots have proved a hit in the UK.
From long country walks to fancy parties, they're the perfect companion to life in Britain – and more than a match for our famously unpredictable climate! More Trending
The company now has four stores across the country, with the latest opening last year in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
If you own a pair of R.M.Williams that you'd like repaired, simply drop them off at one of these stores, or phone their expert team for advice.
Once you've had yours patched up, they'll once again be a reliable companion for all your adventures…

Facebook users were left open-mouthed by the impressive discounts and eagerly flocked to the comments to express this. I hate the way my blonde hair goes orange, so tried a £10 product to get it ashy again… the results speak for themselves One person said: 'Wow I love these.' Another added: 'No way!! Bargain!!' But it's not just those on Facebook loving this popular 'miracle' product. A 225ml bottle of the stuff is normally £5.25 from Waitrose and £4.99 from Boots, but now for just 62p, we think it's a real steal. The Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moisture treatment is infused with Australian Macadamia Nut Oil and according to the online listing, promises 'amazing results'. It is a deep treatment that is said to 'revive dry, brittle hair in need of TLC'. The vegan, cruelty-free formula is free from animal-derived ingredients and has a 'sweet, yummy scent for hair that smells divine.' What are the biggest hair care mistakes? Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist and Brand President at Philip Kingsley spoke exclusively to Fabulous. Not looking after your scalp Your scalp is an extension of the skin on your forehead and it should be given similar attention and care to the skin on your face. Scalp health is vital to healthy hair growth. Your scalp is your hair's support system, and a flaky or inflamed scalp can contribute to hair loss and also impact the quality of hairs as they emerge from the follicle. Do cleanse and tone your scalp frequently. Try to leave no more than 2 days between shampoos. High heat styling The most common cause of hair damage is high heat styling – either with a blow dryer or straighteners. While it may take a little longer, a low to medium heat setting will give you great styling results, but without dryness, breakage and split ends. You should also always use a heat protective product such as our Daily Damage Defence and don't hold your dryer right next to your strands. Not eating well Even if you're using the best products in the world, if you aren't eating well your hair's condition and rate of growth won't be at its optimal. Hair is a dispensable tissue as it isn't needed for physical survival. This means nutrients are first used to keep essential cells functioning, with hair receiving them last. This multi-use product can be used in three different ways - either as a daily deep conditioner, a three minute treatment or an intensive mask. So if you've got dry hair that's in serious need of some TLC, a big squeeze of this bargain buy is sure to be the 'ultimate treat to take brittle, dry and damaged hair from lost-cause to luscious.' Not only this, but your locks are said to be left 'heroically hydrated and deeply conditioned for up to three days - all while retaining lightweight moisture.' Rave reviews And online shoppers are clearly loving it, as it has raved up hundreds of five star reviews online. Not only have many said their hair has become 'softer' after using it, but those with bleached locks praised the effective product. One woman beamed: 'I bought this a few weeks ago and I use it once a month. I have bleached hair and this is amazing stuff! 'Makes my hair soft and not dry or dehydrated like some hair masks/conditioners do. I would definitely recommend.' TINA Farey, Editorial director at Rush Hair, shares her advice… HOW TO RESTORE DAMAGED HAIR Whilst you can't fully reserve the effects of damaged hair, you can stop the problem from growing. Depending on the condition of your hair, I'd recommend getting a trim every six to eight weeks - this will prevent any split ends from travelling further up the hair shaft, which weakens the hair's overall structure and leads to more breakage. Even just an inch of the ends will completely transform the appearance of your hair – trust me. When it comes to products to help restore damaged hair, Goldwell's Rich Repair Treatment Mask is a firm favourite – strengthening damaged locks to be healthy and shiny once again. HOW TO PREVENT DAMAGE My number one tip is to always use a heat protectant – even if you're only blow-drying your hair. Consistent heat styling without one will leave your hair open to heat damage. I'd also recommend refraining from over-washing your hair as this can strip the hair of its natural oils – nobody wants a dry and irritated scalp! And finally, swap your sleek, slick back for a hair down day! They may be in fashion at the moment, but over time all that tension on your strands from being pulled will wreak havoc on your hair follicles – this could lead to thinning and bald spots in areas where the hair is constantly pulled. A second chimed in: 'I have been using this for many years and I wouldn't use anything else, it revives my hair every time.' Whilst someone else penned: 'I've tried very expensive conditioners and super cheap ones. Aussie is by far the best. 'As soon as it touches my hair it becomes softer. I can easily run my fingers through it. It washes out beautifully too, leaving my hair so smooth.'

Ange to be sacked by Tottenham as Europa League triumph not enough to avoid Daniel Levy axe
Time us up for the Australian at Tottenham despite him delivering their first major trophy in 17 years Tottenham are to sensationally sack manager Ange Postecoglou just weeks after he led them to Europa League glory. The Australian made good on his vow that he always wins a trophy in his second season when Spurs downed Manchester United in Bilbao to lift a first major trophy in 17 years. But it came at the end of a desperate domestic season that saw them finish just one place above the relegation zone and European glory hasn't been enough to save his skin. The Australian left Celtic in 2023 after a trophy-laden spell in the Scottish Premiership back but, outside of their famous night in Bilbao, has struggled to bring the same success to Spurs. Ruthless owner Daniel Levy will pull the trigger with Tottenham on the lookout for their next boss while Postecoglou is out of work after two seasons in London. Confirmation is expected soon. The Celtic hero will reportedly get a pay-off of around £4million from Spurs, with two years still remaining on his contract. Tottenham are said to be very keen in bringing in Brentford head coach Thomas Frank as his replacement but - according to reports - will have to fork out £10million to get him out of his existing deal with the Bees.
