David Coote charged by FA over foul-mouthed Jürgen Klopp comments

The Guardian7 hours ago

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association in regards to comments he made about Jürgen Klopp.
Coote was suspended from his role by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in November after a video leaked online showing him making foul-mouthed comments about Klopp. The 42-year-old was sacked the following month after a second video, published by the Sun, allegedly showed him sniffing what appeared to be white powder.
'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jürgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1,' read a FA statement. 'It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality.
Coote has, however, been cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player before the match in question. Coote denied the allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory'.
Coote was banned by Uefa in February from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026. The previous month he said struggles with his sexuality contributed to the 'really poor choices' that cost him his job.

Terrifying moment driver catapults holidaymakers into air after row over AirBnB - as he is jailed

By AirBnB rental. Johnathan Newbury, 33, was yesterday jailed for ten years for ploughing his SUV into pedestrians Ryan Jones, 18, and a 17-year-old boy. He had armed himself with a zombie knife and was 'intent on violence' during the car attack in July last year, a court heard. The row broke out after Newbury discovered the AirBnB he had rented for the weekend in Cardiff, Wales, had accidently been double booked. Newbury and his friend Elliott Fiteni, 23, were already inside the property when Mr Jones and the teenager turned up for their own stay. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard Newbury began hurling threats at the pair, shouting 'I'll f*** you up' through a window. He then hunted the men in a black SUV before mowing them down in the street. Newbury then fled the scene as the victims were left on the ground with serious injuries. Mr Jones suffered injuries to his pelvis and right foot while the teenager lost consciousness and sustained injuries to his jaw, ribs, chest and abdomen. Mr Wilson said the row had started over the booking made in the Cathays area of Cardiff in July of last year where Newbury was due to stay with friend Elliot Fiteni. He said: 'Mr Jones, [...] and another friend had booked an Airbnb on Bruce Street called the Comfortable Stay. 'By chance, a booking had been made at the same address on behalf of Mr Fiteni, who accepted he stayed at the address along with Mr Newbury. 'They were already at the building when Mr Jones and [...] walked towards it.' Newbury, of Cardiff, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article. Judge Jeremy Jenkins Newbury 'You were present at an AirBnB at Bruce Street in Cardiff, the two complainants [...] and Mr Jones had also booked accommodation at the same address and there had been an earlier altercation.' The judge said Newbury had then been part of a group 'armed with what has been described as a zombie knife' and 'intent on violence'. He said: 'The clear aim was to attack [...] and Mr Jones, both ran away from the scene.' Judge Jenkins said Newbury was the driver of the SUV which was 'seen to speed up, to drive on the wrong side of the road into the junction and to deliberately collide with the two men, throwing them up in the air.' Newbury was handed an extended sentence of 10 years and told he must serve at least five years and four months behind bars.

Watch: England U-19s pull off stunning four-goal comeback to draw with Germany

England pulled off a sensational four-goal second-half comeback to draw 5-5 with Germany at the Under-19 European Championship in Bucharest in the highest-scoring game in the tournament's history. Barcelona's Noah Darvic opened the scoring for Germany in the Group B fixture after just seven minutes at the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf and the ever-lively Said El Mala grabbed the first of his two goals with just over half-an-hour played as England seemed to wilt in the stifling heat in Romania. Fulham midfielder Joshua King's 35th-minute goal – firing in from 12 yards out after a Jayden Meghoma cross – had briefly made it 2-1 before their opponents scored three times in six minutes either side of the interval through Max Moerstedt, Leopold Wurm and El Mala to make it 5-1. But the 2022 champions were a side transformed in the second half. They sparked into life when Manchester United's Ethan Wheatley began the comeback in the 52nd minute, forcing the ball home after Germany goalkeeper Konstantin Heide mishandled a header from Nottingham Forest's Zach Abbott. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny made it 5-3 three minutes later and the belief seemed to spread through the whole of Will Antwi's side. The incredible comeback was sealed by a further two goals in three minutes – Abbott heading in from a corner on the hour mark and Crystal Palace's Jesse Derry, son of former Eagles captain Shaun, levelling the scores after Heide had again spilt the ball, this time from a Kaden Young cross.
