Pope Leo XIV flags AI impact on kids intellectual and spiritual development
ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV warned Friday that artificial intelligence could negatively impact the intellectual, neurological and spiritual development of young people as he pressed one of the priorities of his young pontificate.
History's first American pope sent a message to a conference of AI and ethics, part of which was taking place in the Vatican in a sign of the Holy See's concern for the new technologies and what they mean for humanity.
In the message, Leo said any further development of AI must be evaluated according to the 'superior ethical criterion' of the need to safeguard the dignity of each human being while respecting the diversity of the world's population.
He warned specifically that new generations are most at risk given they have never had such quick access to information.
'All of us, I am sure, are concerned for children and young people, and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development,' he said in the message. 'Society's well-being depends upon their being given the ability to develop their God-given gifts and capabilities,' and not allow them to confuse mere access to data with intelligence.
'In the end, authentic wisdom has more to do with recognizing the true meaning of life, than with the availability of data,' he said.
Leo, who was elected in May after the death of Pope Francis, has identified AI as one of the most critical matters facing humanity, saying it poses challenges to defending human dignity, justice and labor. He has explained his concern for AI by invoking his namesake, Pope Leo XIII. That Leo was pope during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and made the plight of workers, and the need to guarantee their rights and dignity, a key priority.
Toward the end of his pontificate, Francis became increasingly vocal about the threats to humanity posed by AI and called for an international treaty to regulate it. Francis said politicians must take the lead in making sure AI remains human-centric, so that decisions about when to use weapons or even less-lethal tools always remain made by humans and not machines.

'We have told them it isn't a matter of the Iran-Israel conflict, it's a matter of aggression against a sovereign country, it's a matter of blatant violation of international law, which should be condemned no matter who prepared this plan,' he said. He responded to questions about the US seeking Pakistan's support for possible American strikes on Iran, especially after a meeting this week between US President Donald Trump and Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, by saying that he hoped Islamabad will stand with Tehran. 'I hope Pakistan won't go for that and will stand with Iran against Israeli aggression,' he said. 'We are in contact with Pakistani officials, they know our stance and they understand us well,' Hosseini said. 'And we hope the decision which is going to be made at the end will be to stand with Iran, to stand with the truth and condemn the aggressors [and] not to give some incentive to the aggressors.' The US, Hosseini said, is engaged in a 'psychological war' against Iran, which is prepared for all scenarios. 'It is a conflict between Iran and Israel, and it's better for a third party not to enter it. If it enters, it would definitely become more complicated and it will have very bad consequences for that third party,' he said.

Prof. Kodandaram of TJS urges Centre to stop Polavaram-Banakacherla link
HYDERABAD Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) president and MLC Prof. M. Kodandaram has demanded that the Centre stop the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Canal project taken up by Andhra Pradesh in violation of the AP Reorganisation Act and without the appraisal and approval of the river boards, Apex Council and other statutory agencies. Speaking to newspersons here on Friday, he suggested that the Centre could go ahead with processing the appraisal of the Polavaram-Banakacherla project only after making allocation of water to the ongoing and contemplated projects of Telangana including the future needs in the Godavari Basin or else it would amount to violation of the riparian rights of Telangana. Prof. Kodandaram said neither Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao nor his party leaders had any moral right to speak on the Polavaram-Banakacherla project. He also wondered by the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders from the State were keeping silent on the project that was bound to harm the interests of Telangana permanently. Against the allocation of 518 tmcft water to it, AP was already utilising over 630 tmcft, while Telangana was not utilising even half of the 968 tmcft allocated to it in the Godavari Basin. With the Polavaram-Banakacherla project, AP was conspiring to take away over 300 tmcft of water more to the non-basin areas at the cost of basin areas in Telangana. Meanwhile, BRS senior leader T. Harish Rao has criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for his comments on the Polavaram-Banakacherla project in Delhi on Friday. He accused the Chief Minister of coming to a tacit understanding with his AP's counterpart and political guru N. Chandrababu Naidu to allow AP to have its way in illegally diverting the Krishna and Godavari waters to the non-basin areas. He pointed out that KCR had been demanding at least 1,950 tmcft water share in the Godavari surplus waters of over 3,000 tmcft in addition to the 968 tmcft of assured water allocated to Telangana by the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal. Against the BRS demand of 2,918 tmcft, Mr. Revanth Reddy was conspiring to limit Telangana's share to just about 1,000 tmc ft, he alleged. Similarly, Mr. Revanth Reddy was talking about only 500 tmcft share in Krishna waters against 763 tmcft being demanded by KCR all along. Mr. Harish Rao sought to know the rationale behind Mr. Reddy's silence on not demanding the Apex Council meeting on the Polavaram-Banakacherla issue.

Pope warns of AI risks to young brains
Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV warned on Friday of the potential consequences of artificial intelligence (AI) on the intellectual development of young people, saying it could damage their grip on reality. Since his election as head of the Catholic Church on May 8, the pope -- a mathematics graduate -- has repeatedly warned of the risks associated with AI but this is the first time he has spoken out exclusively on the subject. "All of us... are concerned for children and young people, and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development," the American pope warned in a written message to participants at the second Rome Conference on AI. "No generation has ever had such quick access to the amount of information now available through AI. "But again, access to data -- however extensive -- must not be confused with intelligence," Leo told business leaders, policymakers and researchers attending the annual conference. While welcoming the use of AI in "enhancing research in healthcare and scientific discovery", the pope said it "raises troubling questions on its possible repercussions" on humanity's "distinctive ability to grasp and process reality". Pope Leo himself has been the target of deep fake videos and audio messages published on social media in recent weeks. An AFP investigation earlier this month identified dozens of YouTube and TikTok pages broadcasting AI-generated messages masquerading as genuine comments from the pope in English or Spanish. A survey from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism this week found significant numbers of young people in particular were using chatbots to get headlines and updates. The Catholic Church has attempted to influence ethical thinking surrounding the use of new technologies in recent years under Leo's predecessor Francis. In 2020, the Vatican initiated the Rome Call for AI Ethics -- signed by Microsoft, IBM, the United Nations, Italy and a host of universities -- urging transparency and respect for privacy.
