The deal offered by the United States is an 'unfortunate compromise' that should be accepted by Russia and Ukraine, argues Anatol Lieven, director of the Eurasia programme at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
Lieven tells host Steve Clemons that Ukraine's leaders should acknowledge that the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia over the past years are lost.
He adds that Russia – by accepting a ceasefire on current battle lines – has 'given up' on trying to occupy all the territory of Ukraine it had hoped for.
Meanwhile, Europe 'has nothing serious to offer' to end the fighting, Lieven says.

dpa Washington/Moscow/Kiev US President Donald Trump sees no chance for an immediate resolution to the Ukraine war following another phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace,' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. He said the call, which lasted approximately, one hour and 15 minutes, dealt with 'the attack on Russia's docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides.' Trump said Putin told him that Russia would have to respond to those attacks 'on the airfields.'The two leaders also discussed Iran's nuclear programme. 'President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion.' Meanwhile, Putin accused Ukraine of terrorism in relation to two fatal train accidents in Russia over the weekend. 'The blow wasdeliberately aimed at the civilian population,' Putin said during a government session in Moscow, according to the state-run TASS news agency. He accused Ukraine of seeking to block talks on an end to the war. Last weekend, two trains suffered accidents in the Kursk and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine after bridges were blown up. Seven people died and dozens were injured in the passenger train derailed near the city of Bryansk. Putin once again rejected calls for a ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, whether for 30 or for 60 days. 'Why should they be emboldened by allowing them a break from fighting?' he queried. He also backed Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who has said Russia should continue to hold talks with a view to achieving its war aims. In Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered an immediate ceasefire that should last at least until a meeting with Putin. If no de-escalation emerged from a meeting of this kind, 'the ceasefire will end on the same day,' he told journalists. Zelensky rejected the memorandum put forward by the Russian side in talks in Istanbul on Monday in which it listed demands for an end to the war. He termed it an ultimatum. Russia's demands could not be met, in particular its territorial demands, he said.

Ukrainian secret service says it targeted pillar of key Crimea bridge
dpa Kiev The Ukrainian secret service SBU said on Tuesday it has seriously damaged a pillar of the key Russian bridge to the Crimean Peninsula by way of a targeted underwater explosion. 'The bridge is effectively in danger of collapsing,' the secret service said. A total of 1,100 kilograms of TNT was used, which had been placed over several months. The agency emphasized that no civilians were harmed in the explosion, which occurred in the morning. A video purporting to show the explosion was released as evidence. It shows water spraying and smoke. The footage was most likely taken from the base of the bridge and is current, but it does not show whether the pillar was actually damaged. The attack was not initially confirmed by the Russian side. The bridge was closed for about three hours on Tuesday morning. According to local media reports, the cause was the removal of damage caused by parts of a downed drone. Shortly afterwards, traffic across the bridge was suspended again without any reasons being given. There was talk in the media of attacks with underwater drones. Traffic resumed across the bridge in the afternoon. A hated symbol for Ukrainians, the bridge had been opened to fanfare by Vladimir Putin in 2018, and is used by Russia to supply its military in occupied parts of Ukraine. Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for more than three years. Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014. Kiev has already carried out several successful attacks on the combined railway and road bridge, which was completed in 2019. So far, the damage has always been repaired and the bridge has been put back into service.

Time is not right for Putin-Trump-Zelensky summit, says Kremlin
dpa Berlin The Russian government sees an early three-way meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump as unlikely, according to a Kremlin spokesman. Putin is ready for contacts at the highest level, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow on Tuesday, according to a report by the Interfax news agency. 'But he emphasizes that such contacts should be the result of agreements reached beforehand at the technical level.' Trump has raised the possibility of such a three-way summit in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for more than three years. Despite the lack of a breakthrough at Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul on Monday, Peskov said that there were important results in the humanitarian field. At their second meeting since mid-May, the warring parties agreed on another large exchange of prisoners and the return of soldiers' bodies. Moscow now expects Ukraine to respond to the Russian list of demands, Peskov said. These include the permanent ceding of Ukrainian territories - which is unacceptable to Kiev. The international community meanwhile has to recognize Russia's territorial conquests, stop military support for Ukraine and lift sanctions against Russia.
