is planned to finally open to patients in 2026. With the oval-shaped building now well-established on the city's skyline, the next issue will be for the thousands of nurses, doctors and key workers looking for accommodation close to their new workplace.
The eventual opening of the 160,000sq m hospital is expected to lead to increased demand for housing in the surrounding area, so this might be a good time to invest before the Dublin 8 property market gets too hot.
Number 5 Lorne Terrace on Brookfield Street has the hospital at the end of the road. It is being sold by O'Mahony Auctioneers with an asking price of €645,000. The 103sq m (1,108sq ft) redbrick is fresh from a full renovation and comes with an A2 energy rating.
The owner bought the house in 2023 and completely gutted it and rebuilt it again, raising roofs and lowering floors to allow for as much light and space as possible. It is unusual to get a house in this area that is finished to such exacting standards, but at the time, the owner was planning to stay in the house long-term so designed it for himself. Future plans have changed recently, however, and he is now following friends farther afield.

A High Court judge has said he will decide this week whether or not to lift a suspension on boating permits needed to ferry people to and from Skellig Michael, saying 'people's livelihoods are at stake'. The permits have not been issued while legal proceedings are before the courts in the form of a judicial review of the tendering process. At the High Court on Tuesday, Mr Justice Garrett Simons said he was 'staggered' by the assertion by lawyers for the Office of Public Works (OPW) that it would need six months to prepare the case. He ordered the case would be heard next month and would get 'top priority'. READ MORE The granting of permits to successful applicants is on hold pending a judicial review taken against the OPW by two companies who were unsuccessful in their applications to the government body for the 2025 season, which runs from May to the end of September. The OPW had run a competition in late 2024 to award 15 boating permits for summer 2025 to serve the Co Kerry island, which was chosen as a film location for the Star Wars movies The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. The OPW has said that under Irish and EU law it was precluded from issuing permits for the 2025 summer season until legal proceedings were resolved. Skellig Michael Boat Trips and Atlantic Endeavour Limited both dispute the process underpinning the granting of the licences, alleging it to be 'deficient' and 'without transparency'. They have been granted permission for the challenge. David Dodd, for the plaintiffs, told Mr Justice Simons nobody wanted the boats not to visit the island. He said permits could be granted by the court in an interim fashion and the issuing of a one-season permit was not a 'contract' as contended by the OPW. Mr Dodd said he was resisting a suggested 'five-year framework' on the OPW's granting of the permits as part of a contract, but the plaintiffs also wanted to see the boats out. He said the OPW in applying to the court to have the suspension lifted had referred to a 'contract' having to be in place for the boats to take to sea. There should be no such 'contract' and permits issued were akin to planning permission or a gun permit being granted, neither or which, he said, were 'contracts' nor necessitated frameworks. A permit is a statutory one without an offer or an acceptance as found in a contract, he said. Whether or not this granting amounted to a 'contract' was a matter for the full hearing of the main case, Mr Dodd said. 'We are happy, however, for the suspension to be lifted,' he said. Mr Justice Simons asked Andrew Beck SC, for the OPW, how it was looking for six months to prepare for this 'most straightforward case of competition for licences'. Mr Beck said there was discovery of documents needed, amendments to make and a possible issue around cross-examination. The judge said he was 'staggered' the case would take up to six months to get on. Mr Justice Simons said he would rule on Thursday whether or not he would lift the suspension of the permits. He adjourned the main hearing to July 21st.

Caoimhín Kelleher is the gift that keeps on giving for his former club Ringmahon Rangers. Confirmation of the 26-year-old's move from Liverpool to Brentford on Tuesday was a happy occasion for the club, seeing one of their own sign the dotted line to become a first-choice goalkeeper at the west London club. But the news was made all the more sweet by a windfall which will now be making its way to the Cork club thanks to a sell-on clause in his original deal signed with Liverpool 10 years ago. Liverpool are reportedly in line to receive £12.5 million (€15 million) for Kelleher, which could increase to £18 million (€21 million) with performance-related add-ons. Twenty per cent of that sum will go back to Ringmahon. READ MORE 'It's going to be substantial,' Ringmahon chairman Paul Higgins says. 'Exactly how much, we don't know, but's it's going to set us up for long into the future.' 'I'm very happy. Very happy for Caoimhín himself, first of all, and his family,' Higgins says, adding it's a very proud day for the club. Ringmahon, which boasts almost 500 members, has made significant investments in its facilities in recent years, but this windfall will give the club more scope to provide for its burgeoning numbers. 'Over the last few years, we've had kids coming into our academy and they want to be the next Caoimhín Kelleher, or they want to be the next Alan Browne [Sunderland], the next Franco Umeh [Crystal Palace], Jadon Umeh [Benfica]. It's great. 'It's easy for us to go back to the kids and say, if you work hard, you have a chance at that. We have photos of the boys when they were younger in teams, working hard. [Current players at Ringmore] see all that and it'll drive them all on to bigger things.' And the Kelleher-effect hasn't gone unnoticed. 'It's bringing numbers in their droves,' Higgins says. 'It's brilliant. And it's huge numbers that want to be goalkeepers, which is probably a problem position for everyone for years.' 'We always believed that [Caoimhín] would be a success,' he adds. 'But I don't think anyone could have expected him to be so successful to the extent that he is, because he's well thought of and well regarded among all his fellow players.' And Higgins feels now is the right time for Kelleher to leave Merseyside. 'He's after winning every single trophy he can at Liverpool. At Brentford now, he's going to go in, he's going to be number one, he's going to be Irish number one. It's a great stepping stone for his future, so it's huge for him.' Wherever this stepping stone may lead for Kelleher, his loyal Ringmahon supporters will follow. 'My daughter texted me, she's only 11, and she says, 'Dad, you have to get me a Brentford jersey now',' Higgins laughs. Cork will surely soon be awash with a red and white jersey of a new kind, one proudly bearing the Brentford bee.

Guinness and Three seen as Ireland's ‘top sponsors' as number of deals rises 29%

Guinness and Three have been named as Ireland's top sponsors as the number of sponsorship deals rose 29 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter, according to data from consultancy firm Onside. The group, which announced the top sports and non-sports sponsors in its quarterly review on Tuesday, said the GAA had a 'very active first quarter', with renewals from long-standing sponsors Centra, SuperValu and Allianz. The group, which has been running the reviews since 2016, said horse racing and soccer were also 'very active categories'. Guinness secured the 'most appealing sponsor' position in sports, driven by the success of the Guinness Men's and Women's Six Nations Championships. READ MORE Vodafone, a long-standing partner of the IRFU, claimed second place, followed by Lidl for its sponsorship of the Women's Gaelic Football Association (LGFA). Telco company Three emerged as the top non-sports sponsor, recognised for its music and venue naming rights strategy with the 3Arena and the 3Olympia. Electric Ireland, for its partnership with Pieta and Darkness Into Light, secured second place, while SuperValu rounded out the top three for its Tidy Towns sponsorship. Onside said the research shows the 'enduring appeal' of rugby as a sponsorship platform in Ireland. Five of the top 10 most admired sports sponsors have prominent partnerships in the sport. 'Despite a disappointing result for Ireland in the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, the review highlights the mass appeal of rugby for consumer-facing brands,' the group said. 'Leading IRFU sponsors Guinness, Vodafone, Aviva, Bank of Ireland and Aldi all feature prominently among the top sports sponsors.' Connacht rugby star Bundee Aki was named as the 'most recognisable, admired, trustworthy, and influential' Irish rugby personality, followed by Leinster's James Lowe and Caelan Doris. Other appealing sports sponsors included Allianz as the top sponsor of Paralympics Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland, and as a sponsor of the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship. Elsewhere, notable sponsors named were Sky as primary partners of the women's and men's national football teams, as well as AIB which sponsors four codes in GAA. 'The sponsorship landscape is constantly evolving, and our review highlights the power of authentic partnerships that resonate with the Irish public,' says Kim Kirwan, director of intelligence and insight at Onside. 'Rugby's continued dominance demonstrates its ability to connect brands with consumers, while the success of non-sports sponsorships like Electric Ireland's Darkness into Light shows the importance of aligning with meaningful causes.'
