Julia Donaldson to release first Gruffalo book in 20 years as she shares 'hope'
Best-selling children's author Julia Donaldson is to team up with illustrator Axel Scheffle to release the first new Gruffalo book in over two decades. The pair previously worked together on the Gruffalo (1999) and the 2004 follow-up, The Gruffalo's Child.
Publisher Macmillan Children's Books described the Gruffalo series as a "bestselling phenomenon". Julia has sold almost 50 million books in her career, with the Gruffalo accounting for over three million.
The story has been translated into 133 different languages. But the Sussex-based author admits writing another follow-up can be difficult.
She hopes the new story will resonate with younger audiences. Speaking to The Bookseller, Julia said: "It's always a challenge to write a sequel. Five years elapsed between publication of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child, and now it will be more than 20 between The Gruffalo's Child and the third book.
"I actually had the basic idea for the story a long time ago, but couldn't think how to develop it.
"I was of course delighted when Axel came on board, and am even more so now that I've seen the brilliant sketches he's already done for the new book. I really hope that children – and adults too – will enjoy the new story, as I know what a wonderful experience shared reading can be."
The publisher added: "Macmillan Children's Books is thrilled to be publishing this extraordinary new story, which sees the return of much-loved characters in a fresh and exciting adventure that has all the hallmarks of a Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler classic.
"The team at Macmillan plans for this highly anticipated publication to be one of the biggest in its history, supported by a blockbuster marketing and publicity campaign."
In an effort to foster a love of reading among youngsters, the National Literacy Trust will utilise the forthcoming book. This initiative comes after the charity reported that currently, only one in three children enjoy leisure reading, marking the lowest interest level since 2005, according to their findings, reports the Express.
Julia remarked: "It was only when the NLT, whose work I'm very impressed by, used the first two books as part of their Early Words Matter programme that I was spurred on to get my idea out of the cupboard and see once and for all if I could turn it into a really satisfying story."
Axel has previously been hesitant regarding another Gruffalo tale. However, upon receiving Julia's narrative, he felt inspired to draw the beloved characters again.
Speaking with The Bookseller, he confessed: "As I have had to draw the odd Gruffalo and his daughter over the past 20 years, I'm not completely out of practice."

However, in a recent podcast with her fellow Bop House member and OnlyFans creator Camilla Araujo, she said she was now doing therapy. In the clip, Julia asked Camilla if she regretted not coming to the event with her. Camilla replied: "I don't regret it. "I think everything happens for a reason, but I'm happy you made a cheque. I wish we could have. "But at the same time you're in therapy for a reason because what you saw traumatised you. "So I'm glad I got to spare my soul and mind of that." In another clip, Julia admitted to regretting joining Bonnie Blue. "if you do see a clip I'm actually like freaking out the whole time," she said. "I do regret it. I love her to death and our managers, but I'm so traumatised." 4 Bonnie has been slammed once again for announcing her next sick stunt Credit: Instagram/@bonnie_blue_xox Bonnie Blue speaks out after claims she 'put 1,056 men at risk' during sex marathon when first guy didn't wear condom Back in January, Bonnie Blue boasted that she had broken the world record for having sex with the most men in one day. The blonde, who has previously been branded "predatory" for romping with teenage lads said she bedded 1,057 blokes in just 12 hours. Julia's interview comes after Bonnie Blue recently hit headlines with her latest desperate stunt, immediately sparking disgust from people online. She revealed her next challenge during an interview on Kat Baker's podcast - leaving the interviewer lost for words as she did so. Who is Bonnie Blue? Born in May 1999, Bonnie - whose real name is Tia Billinger - grew up in a small Derbyshire village, and attended the Friesland School in the village of Sandiacre. She has two half-siblings - a sister and a brother - who have always remained out of the public eye. She never knew her biological father, and considers stepfather Nicholas Elliott her dad. Bonnie also became something of a dance star in her local area, and competed in the British Street Dance Championships alongside her sister back in 2015. She also had a part-time job at Poundstretcher as a teenager. After school, she began working in recruitment. In October 2022, Bonnie married Oliver Davidson, who she had started dating when she was just 15. Once they were married, they moved to Australia, where Bonnie continued working in recruitment. However, it was in Australia that she decided to pursue a different line of work, and tried her luck as a 'cam girl' - crediting Oliver for giving her the confidence to enter the adult entertainment world. She quickly made a name for herself in the industry, and was soon making £5,000 a week. But while her work life was going from strength to strength, her relationship was crumbling, and she and Oliver split after almost a decade together. She moved over to OnlyFans following her cam girl success, and once again found fame on there. She quickly became a favourite on the site, especially thanks to her "niche" of sleeping with young male students - such as when she bedded 158 students during Nottingham Trent University's freshers week in September 2024. Bonnie is now estimated to be worth £3 million, and makes around £600,000 a month on OnlyFans. Her family are also supportive of her work, with mum Sarah Billinger even claiming she's her daughter's PA, and helps clean up after Bonnie's events - as well as handing out condoms to young clients. In January 2025, Bonnie claimed to have broken the world record for the most amount of sex in 12 hours, after apparently sleeping with 1,057 men from 1pm to 1am at a secret London event. "What challenges do you have next?" Kat asked Bonnie during their conversation on The Kat Baker Show. With Bonnie replying that she's called it "Bonnie Blue's petting zoo", and said it will be taking place on June 15. Explaining the sickening idea, she said that she's going to be naked and tied up in a glass box, which would be "open for the public" to do basically whatever they want to her. When Kat asked "where" the box was going to be, Bonnie continued that she'll be in "the centre of London" but "in a house". Making the planned event even more repulsive, Bonnie told Kat that she wanted to beat her own record by "doing 2,000". The clip of Julia's interview received a barrage of comments from concerned fans. One person wrote: "I feel so bad for Julia, yes she agreed to it, but she probably didn't realise what she would be watching, she's only young. I hope the girl makes peace with it." Another commented: 'Not every viral moment is worth participating in." "I feel sorry for this girl," penned a third.

Lifeline Paisley charity marks National Volunteers' Week
Paisley Buddies who dedicate hours of their time to the Star Project took part in the Rhythm to a T session to celebrate National Volunteers' Week. A message of solidarity sounded loud and clear last week as anti-poverty volunteers took part in a drumming session. Paisley Buddies who dedicate hours of their time to the Star Project took part in the Rhythm to a T session to celebrate National Volunteers' Week. An incredible 60 volunteers pledged 6,420 hours, or 917 working days, of their time to the Paisley charity in 2024, bolstering the charity's ability to build a resilient community in the midst of the cost-of-living crisis. Star hosted an afternoon of celebration and gratitude last Thursday to recognise the phenomenal contribution people make to their lifeline projects. Volunteers had the opportunity to spend time together and share in the incredible session offered by Rhythm to a T, a Paisley-based drumming facilitator that runs drumming groups specifically to help with mental health and wellbeing. Anna Gibb, senior development worker at the Star Project, said: 'We are incredibly grateful to all our wonderful volunteers. 'The time and dedication they give to Star Project cannot be underestimated and we wouldn't be able to run all our different services without them. 'The skills and experience each volunteer brings to their role makes Star Project a richer, more inclusive place, and we cannot thank them enough for their hard work.' As part of their celebration event, volunteers were gifted vouchers for free haircuts at Haus of Seisay Hairdressing Academy. A fellow charity, Haus of Seisay strives to provide career opportunities in hairdressing for care experienced young people. Star Project has been at the forefront of tackling the impact of poverty, deprivation and associated stigma since its creation in Paisley in 1999. It, with the support of its volunteers, delivers successful group, individual and community activities and supports that build resilience through themes of wellbeing, connections and creativity. Volunteers work across the daily drop-in, Paisley Men's Shed, Community Fridge, Pantry Plus and the Board of Trustees. When asked why they chose to volunteer with Star Project, one volunteer said: 'Star is my second family, I don't know where I'd be without them, to me, Star is a place of safety, friendliness and inclusion.' Another volunteer added: 'I love volunteering at Star because it is such a welcoming atmosphere and it helps me feel good about myself'.
