Pairing Artwork and Movies on display at Peoria Riverfront Museum

Yahoo07-03-2025

PEORIA, Ill (WMBD) — Like a Sommelier pairs wine with food, Peoria Riverfront Museum guest curator Carlos Valladares pairs artwork with films for a unique event at the museum this weekend.
The Frame to Frame: Film Meets Art series ends Saturday with a full day of movies and discussions regarding the pertinent artwork chosen by Valladares.
The day starts off with Akeelah and the Bee (2006), at 10 a.m., then goes to Hard Truths (2024), at 2:30 p.m.. The last movie of the day is the 1979 feature about the ground-breaking comedian from Peoria, Richard Pryor: Live in Concert at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for each movie range from $6.50 to $10.50 and are available at the Peoria Riverfront Museum website. The museum is located on Peoria's Riverfront at 222 SW Washington St.
Valladares told WMBD This Morning that events like this show there's 'really no museum, at all, nationally, like the Peoria Riverfront Museum. It's really really special.'
And don't worry if you can't make the movies, the artwork being featured is on display.

Elmwood Strawberry Festival returns to celebrate local heritage

ELMWOOD, Ill. (WMBD) — A tradition spanning decades is coming back to the city of Elmwood this weekend. The Elmwood Strawberry Festival is happening on Saturday, June 7th. Tara Lim and Emily Brunnelson from the festival's planning committee stopped by WMBD This Morning to talk about the event. According to Lim, the city used to have a strawberry farm, and the festival began as a way to promote that. But the scope of the event grew over time, now bringing in the entire town. 'It has since shifted into, 'here's what Elmwood has to offer,' and also we want to grow our future,' Lim said. The event kicks off with a strawberry pancake breakfast at 6 a.m. From there, events including a vendor fair, car show and 5K race happen all day long. The festival's food tent opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m., offering pork chops, hot dogs, and of course, strawberry treats. There will also be live music throughout the event, with the River Valley Big Band and The Aristocrats playing a variety of songs while visitors check out the festival. The Elmwood Strawberry Festival will rock downtown this Saturday. For more details, you can check out the festival's Facebook page. Love WMBD This Morning? We love you, too. Summer reading program returns to the Bloomington Public Library

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — People of all ages can participate in the Bloomington Public Library's Summer Reading Program. The program started on May 27 and will continue through July 28, according to library spokesperson Rhonda Massie. Those interested in participating can pick up a reading log from the library or the Bookmobile. They can also be printed out at home by visiting the library's website. Kids, teens and adults have their own reading logs to fill out, which will get them the chance to take home prizes if they complete the log before the end of the summer. Prizes will be distributed from June 9 to the end of the program in July. Last year, the library set a record with 5,330 people completing the program. Massie said that was a more than 16% increase over the previous record. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Renowned ‘90s rock band releases first new music in 25 years

One of the most influential independent bands of the 1990s has put out new music for the first time in more than 25 years. Pavement released the soundtrack for the band's upcoming documentary on Friday, May 30, including a new song that is a cover of Jim Pepper's 'Witchitai-To.' The record marks Pavement's first new material since the band's 1999 EP, 'Major Leagues.' News of the track first surfaced when Scott Kannberg said 'there will be a new Pavement song on the soundtrack' during an interview on the 'Kreative Kontrol' podcast in December 2024. 'Pavements,' which premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 4, 2024, is a feature film chronicling the band's rise to fame in the '90s. The motion picture blends behind-the-scenes footage from Pavement's performances coupled with actor portrayals. It stars Joe Keery, of 'Stranger Things,' as frontman Stephen Malkmus and Jason Schwartzman as the band's manager. The film was released in select theaters across the U.S. on May 2 and will have a wide release on Friday, June 6. Pavement is regarded as 'perhaps the defining American indie rock band of the 1990s,' according to AllMusic. The group formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. Pavement has consisted of members Kannberg, Malkmus, Steve West and Bob Nastanovich for most of the band's career. Pavement released its debut album 'Slanted and Enchanted' in 1992 and briefly attracted mainstream attention with the 1994 single 'Cut Your Hair.' The band released four more albums before going on a hiatus by 2000. Pavement embarked on a reunion tour in 2010, followed by another international tour from 2022 to 2024.
