JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -U.S. hotel chains Hilton and Marriott have announced African expansion drives to tap into the continent's rapid tourism growth.
Rising business and leisure travel on the continent has made it increasingly attractive for multinational companies and Hilton said on Wednesday that it plans to more than triple its African portfolio to more than 160 hotels.
The company plans to enter Angola, Ghana and Benin for the first time while returning to Madagascar and Tanzania, its statement said without providing a specific time horizon for the expansion plans.
Marriott expects to add 50 properties by 2027, it said on Wednesday. Those will include entry into five new countries: Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Mauritania.
The group's existing African portfolio encompasses nearly 150 properties and 26,000 rooms across 20 countries and 22 brands.
Airlines have also increased their African capacity.
Emirates now offers 161 weekly flights across Africa, recently adding daily services to Entebbe and Addis Ababa. United Airlines launched a direct Washington-Dakar route in May and Delta will begin a seasonal daily flight to Accra in December.
International arrivals to the continent rose 9% year on year in the first quarter of 2025, the United Nations World Tourism Organization says, 16% above the same period of pre-pandemic 2019.
That momentum is translating into economic impact. Tourism accounts for between 3% and 7% of gross domestic product in countries such as Kenya, Morocco and South Africa, and up to 15% in tourism-heavy economies such as Namibia, World Bank and national statistics show.

Nigeria raises alarm over proposed Trump visa ban on ECOWAS states

Nigeria has voiced strong concerns over a proposed visa ban policy reportedly being considered by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which could target all member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Nigeria expressed strong concerns over a U.S. proposed travel restriction targeting ECOWAS member states. The policy could hinder significant economic and security partnerships between West Africa and the U.S. Reports highlight overstay rates and security issues as reasons for potential stricter measures. The warning came from Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who described the potential visa ban policy as a major setback for regional integration, trade, and diplomatic engagement. Speaking at the opening of the 54th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial Level in Abuja on Wednesday, Tuggar cautioned that the proposed restrictions risk undermining years of diplomatic progress between West Africa and the United States. " Such restrictions could stifle efforts to deepen U.S.–West Africa relations, particularly at a time when the region is ripe for economic cooperation and security collaboration," Tuggar said. He added: ' It would be most unfortunate if it comes to pass, because we are a region of opportunities ready to do deals. We would like to do deals with the U.S., but visa restrictions are non-tariff barriers to deals. ' While highlighting the strategic potential of the region, Tuggar stressed: ' ECOWAS countries and the U.S. have a rare opportunity to create a partnership based on principles of need. We are also a strategic alternative to more distant and politically divergent energy producers. ' Trump's proposed immigration ban In what could mark a major expansion of U.S. immigration policy, the administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing the extension of its travel ban to include citizens from 36 more countries, with 25 of them located in Africa. Earlier this month, a visa ban targeting 12 countries, with seven in Africa and the rest in the Middle East, took effect, halting new visa issuances to citizens of those nations and imposing additional restrictions on seven others. While this proposed policy remains under consideration and has not been officially announced, sources with knowledge of the matter indicate that the Trump administration is evaluating a proposal to impose stricter immigration restrictions on several African countries, including almost all members of the ECOWAS bloc. A classified memo points to visa overstay rates and weaknesses in national security screening processes as the primary justifications for the potential travel restrictions. Should the plan move forward, these countries could soon face enhanced visa scrutiny or outright bans affecting specific types of travel to the United States, pending further internal review. The document, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio was reportedly circulated to U.S. diplomats working with the affected countries.

US crude stockpiles slump, products build, EIA says

DENVER (Reuters) -U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell sharply while gasoline and distillate inventories rose last week, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. Crude inventories fell by 11.5 million barrels to 420.9 million barrels in the week ending June 13, the EIA said, compared with analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.8 million-barrel draw. Crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, delivery hub fell by 995,000 barrels, the EIA said. Oil futures extended losses despite EIA data showing a larger-than-expected decline in crude inventories. Brent crude was trading down $1.61 at $74.77 a barrel by 10:37 a.m. EDT (1437 GMT), while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) was at $73.39 a barrel, off $1.45. Prices had turned negative before the data release after U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the Israel-Iran conflict and said Iran wanted to negotiate. [O/R] Refinery crude runs fell by 364,000 barrels per day, while utilization rates fell by 1.1 percentage points in the week to 93.2% of total capacity. Gasoline stocks rose by 209,000 barrels in the week to 230 million barrels, the EIA said, compared with forecasts for a 627,000-barrel build. Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, rose by 514,000 barrels in the week to 109.4 million barrels, versus expectations for a 440,000-barrel build, the data showed. Net U.S. crude imports fell by 1.75 million bpd, the EIA said. Malaysia's gas-fired power capacity is set to skyrocket. The cause: data centers

Malaysia is expected to add 6–8 gigawatts of gas-fired power by 2030 to address growing electricity consumption driven by demand from data centres, an industry official said. The country is expected to see the fastest surge in data centre power demand in southeast Asia, with its share of electricity consumed by data centres in the region to triple to 21% by 2027 from 7% in 2022, a joint report in May by Bain & Co with others including Google and Temasek showed. Rising gas demand could see Malaysia, the fifth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), start importing the super-chilled fuel in four to five years, the head of state energy firm Petronas told the Energy Asia conference this week. Megat Jalaluddin, CEO of state utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad, said he expects Malaysia to add 6–8 gigawatts of gas-fired power by building new plants and extending the life of existing ones as it looks to cut dependence on coal. That represents a 40–54% increase from the current 15 GW of gas-fired capacity. Total power consumption in Malaysia is on track to increase 30% by 2030, and Malaysia has already invited industry proposals for supply, he said. 'We want to phase out coal responsibly. Then the next best option that can basically take the place of coal is gas,' he told Reuters on the sidelines of the Energy Asia event. Malaysia could also add as much as 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, more than doubling the 9 GW currently, as data centres push for access to cleaner sources of power, he said. In the last two years, Malaysia has turned to its coal-fired power plants to address surging demand which grew at the fastest pace in 14 years in 2024, according to energy think-tank Ember. Data centres are expected to require 19.5 GW of power generation capacity by 2035, accounting for 52% of Peninsular Malaysia's electricity use, from about 2% now, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof told Reuters. Technology giants including Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet's Google and ByteDance have announced billions of dollars in investments in Malaysia since the beginning of last year, powering an infrastructure boom. Malaysia's southern state of Johor has emerged as Southeast Asia's hottest data centre hub due to its proximity to Singapore, relatively cheap land and power and faster approvals, real estate consultancy Knight Frank said in a report.
