Israeli strikes kill two Gaza journalists, including Al Jazeera reporter

Washington Post25-03-2025

Al Jazeera reporter Hossam Shabat was killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza on Monday, months after the Israeli military accused him of being a member of Hamas, an allegation rejected by Al Jazeera and condemned by the Committee to Protect Journalists as a 'smear campaign.'
CPJ, a nonprofit organization that tracks repression worldwide, has said Israel has 'repeatedly made similar unproven statements' against journalists. In a statement Monday, CPJ denounced Shabat's killing and that of Mohammad Mansour, a journalist who worked for Palestine Today, who was killed the same day in southern Gaza. Shabat's last post on Instagram only hours before he was killed was a post mourning Mansour.

US imposes sanctions on four ICC judges over ‘abuse of power'

The Trump administration announced sanctions on four judges of the International Criminal Court for alleged 'transgressions' against the U.S. and Israel, escalating pressure on what the U.S. labels a highly politicized institution. The decision follows President Donald Trump's executive order in February authorizing sanctions on ICC officials who investigate the U.S. and its allies. The latest penalties single out two judges in the ICC's appeals division who authorized an inquiry into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan, and two judges from the pre-trial and trial division for issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. 'These four individuals have actively engaged in the ICC's illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America or our close ally, Israel,' Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. 'This dangerous assertion and abuse of power infringes upon the sovereignty and national security of the United States and our allies, including Israel.' The judges are Beti Hohler, Solomy Balungi Bossa, Reine Alapini- Gansou and Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza, according to a State Department statement. The Hague-based court said it 'deplores' the sanctions, calling them an attempt to undermine its independence. Trump and his allies have long accused the ICC interfering in U.S. affairs. During his first term, he slapped sanctions on an ICC prosecutor and one of her aides for investigating accusations of American war crimes in Afghanistan. The court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu last November year over allegations of war crimes in Gaza. The Israeli government has denied the accusations, and the Biden administration rejected the court's authority. Neither the U.S. nor Israel is a party to the court, which was established in 2002 to prosecute war crimes, genocide and other atrocities. It has issued 60 arrest warrants, including for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and has detained 21 people. ___ © 2025 Bloomberg L.P. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

The Tunnel That Leads Underneath a Hospital in Southern Gaza

Two feet wide and less than six feet tall, the tunnel led deep beneath a major hospital in southern Gaza. The underground air bore the stench of what smelled like human remains. After walking some 40 yards along the tunnel, we found the likely cause. In a tiny room that the tunnel led to, the floor was stained with blood. It was here, according to the Israeli military, that Muhammad Sinwar — one of Hamas's top militant commanders — was killed last month after a nearby barrage of Israeli strikes. What we saw in that dark and narrow tunnel is one of the war's biggest Rorschach tests, the embodiment of a broader narrative battle between Israelis and Palestinians over how the conflict should be portrayed. The military escorted a reporter from The New York Times to the tunnel on Sunday afternoon, as part of a brief and controlled visit for international journalists that the Israelis hoped would prove that Hamas uses civilian infrastructure as a shield for militant activity. To Palestinians, Israel's attack on, and subsequent capture of, the hospital compound highlighted its own disregard for civilian activity. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Israel says it found body of Hamas chief Mohammed al-Sinwar in tunnel

The Israeli military on Sunday said it had located the remains of Hamas military leader Mohammed al-Sinwar in an underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. Al-Sinwar, the brother of former Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar who was also killed by Israel, was killed along with the commander of the Rafah Brigade, Mohammed Sabaneh, in an attack on May 13, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a post on its Telegram channel. The two had been hiding in an underground command and control centre belonging to the Palestinian Islamist Hamas group, it said. The Islamist group has not confirmed Mohammed al-Sinwar's death. The Israeli military said their remains, along with various personal items, were found beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis. Israel has repeatedly said that Hamas uses civilian facilities like hospitals and schools, as cover for its operations - which Hamas denies. "Additional bodies of terrorists were located during the operation, their identities are currently under examination," the statement added. The IDF showed the tunnel to several journalists on Sunday, including a dpa photojournalist and also posted a video of soldiers dragging a corpse wrapped in white out of the tunnel on its Telegram channel. The military said it was very far underground, in the immediate vicinity of the clinic. The dpa photographer described a strong smell of decay in the air, and said the floor was covered in worms. In one room, which had apparently been used as a dormitory, there were many blankets on the floor. He said no technical equipment or similar items were visible.
