Ex-Dublin football ace points to why the county has suffered shocks in Leinster

Former Dublin star Alan Brogan has blamed a drop-off in standards in Dublin secondary schools as a reason for the county's alarming Leinster football championship exits at senior and underage levels in recent weeks.Following Louth's comprehensive victory in Wednesday's Leinster minor semi-final, for the first time in 28 years a Dublin side won't contest a provincial decider."It's the hardest type of loss, when you never give it the level of performance that you're capable of," said Dublin's minor manager Damien Fennelly after the 2-17 to 1-8 reversal in Naul.Dessie Farrell's seniors lost to Meath on April 27 - their first time to suffer defeat in the Leinster championship since 2010 - while the under-20s also lost to Meath back in March."Disappointing results for Dublin seniors, 20's and minors in last few weeks," tweeted Brogan, an 11-time Leinster championship winner at senior level with the county and three-time All-Ireland medallist. "Difficult to pinpoint reasons for what seems like a drop off but I believe the drop-off in standard of Gaelic football in Dublin secondary schools in last 10 years is huge issue."In contrast, Louth have progressed to all three Leinster football finals - the Wee County have already won the under-20 final and will face Offaly in the minor decider. But, first up, the seniors will take on Meath in the senior decider on Sunday.
"It has been a fantastic couple of weeks, it really has," said Louth chair Seán McClean, who paid tribute to the under-20s' victory in an interview on RTÉ's Morning Ireland.
"They're a great bunch of young lads and work extremely hard, they're coached by some of the finest coaches in the province, never mind in the county, so we're blessed that way. The young lads work extremely hard and got their rewards for it last night."
Asked to put his finger on why Louth football is in such rude health, McClean replied: "There's a lot of very, very good work going on in all the clubs in the county at the minute, we had St Mary's this year going very close to winning a provincial title.
"We had Dundalk Gaels and the Wolfe Tones competing extremely well at their levels as well so there's fantastic work going on and we have some very good management teams with all these teams.
"So we're just in a good place but like everything else, unless you have good footballers on the field you're not going to do anything and the lads that we have are really buying into this.
"They're really working extremely hard and especially during the winter when nobody sees them they're out there working seven days a week."
McClean acknowledged that Drogheda and Dundalk have traditionally been seen as soccer towns "to a degree", but he pointed to the work that has been done to change that.
"We have put a lot of work into the schools in Ardee, Dundalk and Drogheda and have started to improve results," he said. "I notice walking around these towns now you're starting to see a lot more GAA jerseys on kids as opposed to the soccer jerseys, which is always a sign that the tide is rising."
All roads lead to Croker on Sunday for Louth fans and a first Leinster senior final against Meath since that controversial 2010 encounter.
"It's going to be a battle, we've faced them a number of times in the last two years and it's always come down to a kick or two, it's going to be a colossal game," McClean remarked. "I think everyone in Louth is heading down to it and I'm sure everyone in Meath as well, we're really looking forward to it."

Kildare v Dublin: Time, tickets, TV, odds, and everything you need to know ahead of crunch hurling clash

Dublin are set to make the brief journey to Newbridge this Saturday to face Kildare in the preliminary quarter-final of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. The Dublin team will be keen to regain their momentum this summer, having missed out on a second consecutive provincial final. Sean Currie has been performing well this championship, boasting 4-44 from his Leinster campaign, with Brian Hayes and Cian O'Sullivan also making their mark. This weekend's hosts and opponents are entering the game on a high note. They clinched the Joe McDonagh Cup last weekend with an impressive 10-point victory over Laois. Second-half goals from Jack Travers and Jack Sheridan enabled the Lillies to distance themselves from their Leinster rivals and secure their first-ever Joe McDonagh Cup. They also achieved promotion from the Allianz Hurling League Division 2 this year, but fell short in the league final earlier this year against Down. They're set to face Dublin in the league and Leinster championship next year, and will be looking to set an early precedent by ending their summer this weekend. Kildare's stellar performance at the weekend underscores the threat they pose, with David Qualter being one player to keep an eye on. He racked up 1-65 throughout the league and demonstrated his form once again last Sunday when he scored 0-13, with 11 of those points coming from frees. Sheridan and Gerry Keegan will also be among several attackers hoping to give Dublin a run for their money this Saturday as Dublin make a short trip. The victors will face a formidable challenge against Limerick in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship semi-finals, set for the weekend of June 21/22. Here is everything you need to know ahead of the game: Where is the game taking place, and what time is throw-in? The game is happening at Cedral St Conleth's Park in Newbridge. Throw-in is at 4pm. Derry v Dublin: Time, tickets, TV, odds, and everything you need to know ahead of key football clash

Dublin have to win to keep their All-Ireland Championship fate in their own hands when they take on Derry in their final Group 4 clash. All-Ireland champions Armagh are the first side in the three years of the round robin to qualify as table toppers with one game to spare. This is the third year in a row they've topped their group to claim the one automatic quarter-final spot on offer. This may help Galway, who they face this weekend. Galway have one point, the same as Derry, after the sides drew last time out. If Derry beat Dublin they survive - and on top of this, if Galway beat Armagh then it would be Dublin who finish bottom of the group and bow out. A draw is enough for Dublin to go through, and would see Derry exit the competition if Galway were to get a draw or better against Armagh. A Galway draw and a Derry win over Dublin would mean the two sides finish on two point but Galway would be out (based on their head to head loss to Dublin). Galway (-1) can still lose to Armagh and survive provided Derry (-4) lose to Dublin and the current three point gap in scoring averages between Galway and Derry isn't bridged. If Armagh draw or win against Galway, Dublin are safe regardless of their result against Derry. Here is everything you need to know about the game: Where is the game taking place, and what time is throw-in? The game is happening at Pairc Esler in Newry. Throw-in is at 6:30pm. Are tickets still available? Tickets are still available on Ticketmaster here. Will the game be on TV? The game will be live on GAA+. He said: 'As far as George Kambosos, a lot of people want to say that - you know when they fight me a lot of guys game plan to go forward, hit him in the shoulder, break him down. "That's every guy's f**cking game plan. I think that George Kambosos is at this level because obviously he's got boxing skills. That's what f***ed Teofimo up. "Teofimo came at him as if he was just a regular guy and you know he ran into his face. I know for sure I'm confident in myself, I've been saying it since the face off. "I want to bet 50,000. His dad said he got the bet, so hold up, he said bring the money. The money's here, hold up." After Hitchins produced the cash - Kambosos alleged it was "fake" money causing the two camps to clash on stage. And Kambosos' dad and trainer Jim is said to have attacked Hitchins' trainer Lenny Wilson in defence as security were forced to intervene.
