SANDAG plans $260M project to restore San Diego beaches

Yahoo08-04-2025

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Coastal cities all have the same problem — sand diminishes over time naturally. The question is, how do you support replenishment without breaking the bank of taxpayers?
The natural sand that makes up the 70 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean in San Diego County is decreasing more than it naturally would because of upstream dams blocking sand from flowing down the rivers onto the beaches.

So how do we solve the problem?
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is proposing a $260 million sand replenishment project that would replenish the sand on 18 beaches from Oceanside to Imperial Beach. The project also includes Dana Point and San Clemente.

SANDAG Board Member and Mayor of Del Mar, Terry Gaasterland, was live on KUSI Monday morning to break down the project.
Gaasterland said the project, which is still in the beginning planning stages, would take 5.8 million cubic yards of sand, or about 1,000 football fields filled with 3-foot-deep sand, from an area one-mile offshore of the San Diego coast, to be added to the beaches.
Dredging to take place in Oceanside Harbor through Memorial Day
The project next needs board approval from SANDAG. The state of California has also submitted a grant, requesting state and federal funds for the project.
Gaasterland said that as a board member, she is interested in what is driving the coasts upward and would like to see a breakdown of the line items as the project costs nearly 10 times more, and would produce triple the amount of sand than the last project back in 2012. But she also noted cost increases are being seen in all projects that are happening in our region currently.

Gaasterland also spoke briefly on the City of Oceanside's proposed pilot project to construct an artificial reef in an effort to retain sand on Oceanside beaches.
Once the funding is in place and the project is approved, construction would then be able to begin.

‘Ballerina' Box Office Projections Drop Ahead Of ‘Lilo & Stitch' Showdown

Ana de Armas in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." Lilo & Stitch is projected to top Ana de Armas' John Wick spinoff movie Ballerina in its opening weekend at the domestic box office after early forecasts suggested a different outcome for the action crime thriller. Rated R, Ballerina — formally titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — stars Ana de Armas as a vengeful ballerina and trained assassin in a tale that runs parallel to some of the events in the 2019 blockbuster John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Keanu Reeves and other John Wick franchise stars including Ian McShane, Angelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick appear in Ballerina in supporting roles. Lilo & Stitch, of course, dominated the box office over the recent four-day Memorial Day weekend holiday by earning $182.6 million from 4,410 North American theaters. The live-action remake of the 2002 Disney animated classic has earned $284.2 domestically and $334.4 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $618.6 million to date. In its projections for the June 6-8 box office on Wednesday, Variety is forecasting that Lilo & Stitch will earn somewhere between $30 million to $35 million in North American theaters this weekend, while Ballerina will run a close second with a take of $28 million to $30 million from 3,400 theaters domestically. Distributed by John Wick franchise studio Lionsgate, Ballerina, directed by Len Wiseman, had a production budget of $90 million before prints and advertising costs, Variety reported. Variety's projections are soft in comparison to early forecasts from the likes of Deadline and Box Office Pro. On May 15, Deadline projected that Ballerina would open in the vicinity of $35 million to $40 million in the film's opening frame, while Box Office Pro on May 16 projected a $35 million to $45 million opening for Ballerina in its weekend box office debut. On Wednesday, Box Office Pro's opening weekend projections for Ballerina dropped to a $32 million to $40 million opening frame. Writer-director Wes Anderson's latest offbeat comedy The Phoenician Scheme is expanding to a wider release this weekend following a limited release in theaters on May 30. The Phoenician Scheme, which held its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, opened in six theaters domestically and earned just over $603,000 in its debut. The film is also already playing in international markets, where it has earned $7.3 million to date. Variety projects that The Phoenician Scheme — which will open wide on Friday in 1,500 North American venues — will debut somewhere in the single digits but did not peg a specific number.

Victoria's Secret Cybersecurity Breach A Significant Concern: Analyst

Telsey Advisory analyst Dana Telsey maintained a Market Perform rating on Victoria's Secret & Co. (NYSE:VSCO) with a price forecast of $24. On Tuesday, the company reported a cybersecurity breach that caused it to take its website offline for three days in late May, the fashion industry hardly batted an eyelash. Also, the company reported preliminary first-quarter results and saw revenue of $1.35 billion (vs. consensus of $1.33 billion) and adjusted EPS of 9 cents (vs. street view of four cents). This is compared to the company's prior guidance of net sales of $1.30 billion-$1.33 billion and adjusted EPS range of a loss of 10 cents to a profit of 10 cents. The analyst is encouraged by the company's better-than-expected preliminary results, showing continued momentum despite a slow start in January/February. However, the cybersecurity incident is a significant concern; Telsey noted that VSCO's inability to access systems for its full earnings report has caused a postponement. Given digital sales were ~33% last year, the analyst believes that the prolonged website shutdown during Memorial Day sales could have a meaningful impact. While the first quarter showed positive momentum, the analyst asserted that the unknown fallout from the cyberattack could weigh on the second quarter and the second half as details emerge. With this new incident, ongoing macroeconomic challenges, and fluid tariff impacts, the analyst remains cautious on the company. Despite strides in product and messaging, Telsey believes the brand still needs to be more successfully repositioned within its highly competitive, low-growth category. Consequently, the analyst lowered the estimates and now projects FY25 EPS at $2.22, down from $2.35 previously, which compares to last year's $2.69 and the prior consensus of $2.22. Also, the FY26 EPS estimate is lowered to $2.38 from $2.58, against a prior consensus of $2.35. Price Action: VSCO shares are trading lower by 0.84% to $20.10 at last check Wednesday.
