Starbucks cafes are getting more managers

Starbucks will add at least one dedicated, full-time assistant store manager to most of its company-owned restaurants starting in the fall, Chief Partner Officer Sara Kelly wrote in a company post Tuesday.
An assistant manager will provide consistent leadership during operating hours and help run the store, oversee teams and serve customers.
Adding more assistant managers will help the chain with a critical shortage occurring in store-level leadership. Roughly 20% of the chain's stores have an assistant store manager, and they often tend to be short-term, Kelly said.
Ensuring stores are properly staffed is part of CEO Brian Niccol's Back to Starbucks plan to improve the overall coffeehouse experience for staff and customers.
The initial phase of this assistant manager plan will roll out across six U.S. company-operated districts in September. The company will gather learnings from these pilots before scaling full-time assistant manager roles to a majority of its stores in 2026. In Canada, the assistant manager expansion will begin in the summer of 2026.
'For many, it will also be a meaningful first step into coffeehouse leadership, supporting Starbucks' goal to develop talent, support internal career growth, and hire 90% of retail leadership roles from within,' Kelly said.
This move also builds upon the chain's new Green Apron Service model that it began deploying across 2,000 company-owned locations in the U.S. in May. That model 'combines and unifies new service standards and expectations, changes to partner plays and deployment, streamlined routines, and our order sequencing algorithm,' Niccol said during an April earnings call.
Niccol said that the new service model would add more flexibility to its operations in addition to improving peak throughput, capturing demand, boosting the customer experience and growing transactions. The chain has paused its rollout of its Siren Craft System and curtailed the deployment of a cold press and cold brew equipment as it focuses on its new service model, which has 'more potential to improve throughput and connection while minimizing future capital expenditures on equipment,' Niccol said.
Starbucks also said this week that it is testing a virtual assistant in 35 stores that will help staff look up recipes, troubleshoot equipment and schedule last-minute callouts. This technology, which can be used on an iPad, is meant to also improve employees productivity and the guest experience.

After several years, Google has released a major update to the iOS version of its Snapseed photo editor. Version 3.0 is the program offers a complete redesign of both the iPhone and iPad apps. All of the images that have been edited with the tool are displayed in a grid. Navigation has been rearranged into three tabs, with a new Faves section for the photo tools that you want to quickly use on the regular. It boasts more than 25 different tools and filters for altering photos, including some newly added film filters. Snapseed also has a refreshed its logo with a more streamlined look. Google acquired Snapseed all the way back in 2012. The new take on the app is a surprise, since Snapseed hadn't received any major updates on iOS since 2021. One thing has not changed: the app is still free and has no advertisements. For now, the listing for Snapseed in Google Play is still a version from last year; it's unclear if or when 3.0 will arrive on Android.

Everything from essentials to food is expensive right now. It has gotten so bad that people are calling it a crisis, and many have stopped buying everyday items altogether. People aren't getting haircuts, they've stopped going out to eat, buying living this too, you get it. So, it's no surprise over a million people have related to this viral video of popular TikToker Avery Katherine Wood when the price of her recent Starbucks order left her speechless. In the video, Avery records herself in the drive-thru. She orders a grilled cheese and a venti Strawberry Acai Refresher blended with lemonade. She also adds popping boba. And when the drive-thru worker tells her the total is $15.43, she is so speechless, she reacts with a mixture of facial expressions: And finally musters up all she can think: "OH MY GOSH..." "FIFTEEN DOLLARS??????" she says, repeating the amount back to herself. Trying to make sense of it, she adds, "Popping boba had to be like, added $2.50." Still in shock, she repeats, "WHAT? OH MY GOSH!!!" She then recalls the cost of her recent order from Chicken Salad Chick where she said she spent $13 on a drink, a cookie, broccoli salad, and "a big ass sandwich." "And I just dropped $15 on a grilled cheese and a Starbucks THE FUDGE," she concludes in her video, which has a lot of people talking about more than just her hilarious facial reactions. People immediately started trying to break down the price for her... Which still seemed to leave her in disbelief. But, sadly, many have already gotten accustomed to these high prices, so the shock factor is no longer there. In fact, things are so expensive in some places, the price of her order is actually considered reasonable in comparison. Either way, the prices are obviously tough to fork over. Despite people still trying to find alternative ways to save money at Starbucks, like using the mobile app, they say they always have to double-check the price ahead of time. To sum it up, it's just another example of how people are struggling to afford the same things in 2025 that they did in 2022. As someone who doesn't frequent Starbucks (shoutout to my 7-year-old Keurig that is still going strong!), I wondered what the price would be near where I live in Burbank, California. So, I downloaded the app and pretended to order as a pickup since I know delivery charges fees. I wasn't able to order the exact Strawberry Acai Refresher because they didn't have the popping boba, but I did select blended with raspberry pearls. The grilled cheese was sold out. The total for just the drink came to $7.50 before tax/tip, so I am assuming if I were to add a grilled cheese, it would easily be $15, likely higher. Google is offering buyouts to certain employees in the United States and requiring more workers to return to offices as it continues to shift toward AI. The buyouts would see Google provide employees with a pay and benefits package in exchange for their exit. 'Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for US-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead,' Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said in a statement. 'A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person.' The exact details of this deal are to follow, according to a memo reportedly sent by Jen Fitzpatrick, senior vice president of core systems. CNBC reports that mid- to senior-level employees in the Peoples Operations unit received up to 14 weeks of their salary plus another week for every completed year on the job during a previous buyout in February. CNBC and Business Insider reported on the memo on Tuesday. Fitzpatrick reportedly stated that AI is 'reshaping everything—our products, our tools, the way we work, how we work, how we innovate and so on.' She continued, 'To meet this transformational moment, we need everyone to show up with an unparalleled sense of energy and enthusiasm for Core's mission, connecting and collaborating at speed so that we can tackle all of the ambitious work we need to do.' Meeting the moment also means being willing to commute up to 50 miles to the office three times a week. In the same memo, Google reportedly announced that all employees within that distance of an 'approved return site' must come in 60% of the time. Taking the stance that workers must show face to perform well, Google reportedly stated, 'We want to ensure Core Googlers are fully committed to being here and actively contributing. These programs will help us be even more focused on our mission and will enable us to operate with greater velocity, efficiency and collaboration.' Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick reportedly noted that the buyouts are for employees 'who aren't feeling excited about and aligned with Core's mission and goals, or those who are having difficulty meeting the demands of their role.' In other words, if you feel behind at work, quitting might be the best option. Though the buyouts are voluntary, they could spell layoffs for those teams. In January, Google offered buyouts to employees in its platforms and devices division, only to lay off hundreds of workers in the unit a few months later. Google also laid off about 12,000 employees in January 2023 and has done multiple rounds of layoffs since.
